a stupid question regarding esms/esps in overwrite
RonHiler replied to hackinghippie's topic in Skyrim Revisited (retired)
I just renamed it, so it was no longer a missing master. As I remember, that issue comes about because Neo merges some files. So of course the CR Patch expects the name of the merged file. In the version of SR:LE I used (which was old), he hadn't merged those files yet, so there was no such master. While technically, the CR might need *all* of the files that were merged into one (and I was prepared to add them as masters), it turned out only the original file was needed (as far as I could tell anyway). Now that was my case. Depending on your situation that may be different. -
a stupid question regarding esms/esps in overwrite
RonHiler replied to hackinghippie's topic in Skyrim Revisited (retired)
Hey hackinghippie, Maybe this is too late, as you appear to be going back to reinstall the missing master anyway. But if you run into any issues like this again.... I had to remove Book Covers of Skyrim from my install (because I installed Legacy of the Dragonborn over the top of SRLE which has BCoS integrated), and of course this made the CR Patch unhappy. Rather than go through the entire process of manually creating a new CR patch without the bookcover references (uhg), I instead used TES5Edit to remove the references from the existing one. There is a handy little script in TES5Edit (and the name of it escapes me at the moment, it's something like "List records referencing plugin" or somesuch) that will show you every reference into the master you are missing. Then you can just go through those references and overwrite them with the next closest match. Anyway, I documented the process in this video (starting at about 7 minutes in) Also, I too ran into that same issue with the ELE_Legendary_Fs_Lite file (for reasons which I won't bore you with here). I just renamed it, it worked fine. [edit: Hey it embedded the video! I wasn't expecting it to do that. Hope that's okay]. -
Skyrim Revisited: Legendary Edition News
RonHiler replied to Neovalen's topic in Skyrim Revisited (retired)
I've just finished installing SR:LE, and am in the process of putting LotD on top (also SkyComplete). So far so good, no real big issues that I've found so far (the only really major thing I ran into was the conflict resolution patch, which has Book Covers of Skyrim as a master, but which you have to remove because BCoS is integrated into LotD). I resolved that with a bit of editing in TES5Edit and then a "Clean Masters" command on the CR patch. I haven't entirely finished yet, but from my initial tests (based on about an hour of messing about in the museum and Solitude), everything is looking pretty good. I'll be checking what sort of conflicts there are in TES5Edit. Could still crash and burn. -

DDSOpt, SR:LE, and the Passthrough setting
RonHiler replied to RonHiler's question in DDSopt Support
Thanks Kelmych, I "found" the old link, because the SR:LE links to it, I didn't go hunting for it :) It's in section 2.3 of the current guide: Perhaps that link needs to be updated? Should I let Neovalen know, or am I confused? In section 3.6 of the guide, I did indeed use the mod (rather than optimize the textures manually), so no worries there. However, it is in sections 4.5.2.1 (Falskaar) and 4.5.2.2 (Wrymstooth) that the confusion comes in. In both sections, a DDSopt pass is recommended. Both sections link to this page: https://wiki.step-project.com/User:Neovalen/Skyrim_Revisited_-_Legendary_Edition/DDSOpt_Processing From what you are saying, it seems like that setting should be unchecked, because we are doing two passes for each section (one for the .dds files, and another separate pass for the _n.dds and _msn.dds). It seems as though the second pass might overwrite the work done in the first pass if you do not uncheck that setting. But I may be confused. As I said before, I'm not even close to an expert with the ins-and-outs of DDSopt, hehe.- 9 replies

There is a super-secret option 4, which might suit your needs :) Right click on the offending version number in red and select the "Ignore" option. This changes the color from red back to white. That's what I do. I hope that's what you were talking about. If it's something different, my apologies.

Hi y'all, I'm hoping for some clarification. I wasn't sure whether to put this into SR:LE or here, but I think the DDSopt experts are here, so this is where I will try :) I'm in the process of installing SR:LE, and it was pointed out to me that during the optimization step for Falksaar and Wyrmstooth that I ought to have unchecked the "Passthrough" setting in DDSopt. So this is where the confusion comes from. On this page, which is the DDSopt guide for STEP: https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:DDSopt/Skyrim In section 1.2.4 step 2, it says: Click [ignore] from the main menu and untick [Copy unprocessed and ignored files (passthrough)] if it is ticked. In section 1.3.2 step 2, it says: "Click [ignore] from the main menu, untick [Copy unprocessed and ignored files (passthrough)], and tick [Don't process any already processed files (DDS only)]." The first section is for optimizing the vanilla textures, and the second section is for optimizing the mod textures. In both cases, you are directed to uncheck that setting (which makes it odd that it is set in the first place in the "Ignore" picture earlier in the page, why not just set it to off in the first place?). Now, that is for STEP. For SR:LE, the equivalent page is here: https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:DDSopt_%26_Texture_Overhauls#tab=QUICK-START_GUIDE Notice a couple of things: 1) the "Ignore" picture shows the passthrough setting to be checked. 2) Nowhere on this page is it stated to change the status of this setting. So for the purposes of my install, I left it on, since Neovalan never said to change it, but I've since been informed that may not be correct. It's confusing, as STEP says one thing and SR:LE says something else. And I'm not an expert in DDSopt to know which way is better. So what do you guys think? Which way is correct? Should I have unticked that setting per the STEP guide, or left it on per the SR:LE guide?

SRLE Extended String Count Testing
RonHiler replied to linar9415's topic in Skyrim Revisited (retired)
Wow, if that works as advertised, that ought to be a mandatory install for anyone with a heavily modded game. Nice fix for a sticky problem! -
It's all good :) Not really what you were after, I get that. Just as well you didn't want links. The vids I were thinking of were STEP vids, not SR:LE. You may be right, there might not be any "Finished Product" style vids out there. Which is odd. You'd think someone would have posted some, even just gameplay vids. Mine will be there eventually when I start my Let's Play, but yeah, that's still a good month off before those even begin (and even then, I won't have a fully vanilla SR:LE, I'm going to install LOTD and SkyComplete over the top of SR:LE). Anyway, good luck with your install. Be vigilant with the "Optionals" stuff. For whatever reason, I've personally found those are easy to miss when you are cruising through an install.

I suppose you are referring to my series. It was started in mid December, so actually it's only 4 months old. And I'm well over halfway. I hope to finish up in about a month (I only do two 20-ish minute episodes per week). Currently I'm a the end of section 4.8 (out of 4.12), and I expect to blow through section 5 pretty quickly. At the end of each episode I do fire up the game and show the results (as much as I can) of the installed mods for that episode. So it's not like it's totally without gameplay results. Not gameplay as such, but at least you get to see what changed. When the series is complete, it is my intent to begin a "Let's Play" of Skyrim using that installation, so you will eventually have quite a lot of gameplay vid to check out, albiet not for a while yet. Sorry if my style is not to your taste. You can't please everyone :) I don't know you will find what you are looking for though. Any video that tries to compress an installation down into a single one hour video would be useless (in my opinion). True, mine do go pretty slow (they are really geared toward the total newbie), and maybe your looking for something that goes a bit faster? There are some more "official" videos that exist, but they're more just overviews rather than installation guides. Maybe that's what you're after? I can try to track down the links (if someone hasn't already provided them for you).

Doubts about mod installation order

Looking for a little clarification on this mod as well. EatingSleepingDrinking Author: gekkou1992 Version: N/A (Animations Package Optional) Mod Notes: This mod contains an animation package that can be used by Bathing in Skyrim. I took the "N/A" part of the version number to mean the mod main file itself does not need to be installed, we are ONLY looking to install the optional "Animations Package" file. Did I presume correctly? Just wanting to make sure I've interpreted this right :) -
Sure, no problem. My channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmPJwZTUqWfmmspg4DbSTPg There are a number of playlists. What is probably of the most interest to you guys would be the Skyrim LP, here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaHO2M49jtr0vuNpeIp7HS__ctx3fDG6k and perhaps the ongoing game programming series (for examples of how I do technical videos) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaHO2M49jtr19lU6y8TrC4wlgcPzd5Gvq As for being long, it doesn't bother me in the slightest (I was after all, doing an LP of Skyrim :) ). I do completionist LPs of sandbox games, they tend to run quite long (e.g. I'm about 50% through GTA 5 right now, and sitting close to 50 videos in (around 50 hours)). Hundreds of hours seems long though. I was thinking it ought to be something like 10 hours worth (cutting out download times). But then that might be too short, given the explanations. If it got 50 hours in (say) and I did 20 minute vids, that'd run 150 videos. I'd be fine with that.

Thanks Tech. I have watched a few of those already during the course of installing my mods. It's not QUITE what I had in mind (I was more thinking a step-by-step, following the webpage instructions in order, which GP isn't doing), but it is similar. Perhaps me doing a series would be redundant.

Hey y'all, My first posting here (though I've been lurking for a while). And I'm sorry to rezz a thread that hasn't been posted in for a while, but since I this is where I've seen this request (more than once), I thought it might be appropriate. I thought I might offer my services in this resepct (not for money as is suggested above, but just to help out). Some background about me: I have a small YouTube channel (31 subs last I checked), which currently has over 300 videos in it (most of them around an hour long each). Obviously I don't do this for the subs, I do it for the enjoyment of it. I've run a number of LPs of various games (currently running three games now, in addition to a game programming series using Unity3D). Up until recently, I was also doing a Skyrim LP set. Unfortunately, I installed a number of mods myself, and after about 20 episodes or so, found it was starting to get unstable (locking at the load screens mostly). I did a wipe and full re-install of all the mods, which helped for a while (another ~10 episodes), but it's gotten unstable again, to the point where it's unplayable. Which is what brought me to STEP in the first place. I came looking to reinstall with a known stable solution (and yes, I'm aware this means I'm likely going to have to start a new game from scratch). That way I can do an LP without having to worry it's going to crash another 30 episodes into the reboot. So I began with a fresh vanilla install of Skyrim, started going through the STEP installation. Now, I'm not a mod expert by any means (if I was I probably wouldn't have installed them improperly in the first place). But I know most of the tools (MO was new to me, I had used NMM prior to that, but I've found I like MO now that I've gotten used to it). I would say I have enough experience in installing STEP that I'm not a rank amatuer (newbie), but I'm not an expert either. Which perhaps gives us an opportunity. I have to agree with Ray et al. The guide, while reasonably well written, isn't especially newbie friendly, I fumbled around with it a bit before getting the hang of it. And that's fine, it wasn't meant to be. It was written by experts. IME, things that are written by experts tend to be written FOR experts. It's quite natural. You assume a certain level of knowledge that someone who is new to the process might very well not have (e.g. HOW do you hide a file, WHAT is MCM, etc). It needs to have a bridge between the current guide and the knowledge of someone who has no idea what they are doing. So I was thinking: What if I did a video series on installing STEP aimed at the total newbie? I'm new enough to the process I wouldn't be assuming any prior knowledge (or not much anyway) of the user. But I'm not so new that I have no clue what I'm doing. I have some qualifications: 1) I have a good deal of recording equipment and software, and I know how to use them. 2) I've done technical recordings before (the ongoing game programming series), this wouldn't be a whole lot different. 3) I'm both a professional and hobbyist programmer, so I'm quite technically adept wrt computers in general (and coding in particular). 4) I've installed STEP:Extended recently (mostly, not QUITE finished, but pretty close, though I haven't done the dreaded step 2N yet). On the downside: 1) It wouldn't be for everyone. Expert modders would have no use for it I'm sure. 2) It would quickly go out of date (I presume I'd use 2.2.9.2, and of course as soon as you updated to the next version we'd get out of synch) 3) Of course it would be specific to MY setup (I would be using STEP:extended). I would also include SkyComplete and Legacy of the Dragonborn on top, as I consider those two critical to the type of LP I want to record. I may or may not use an ENB of some sort (undecided on that). I'd like to have a (non-nude) female skin replacer (such as Daughters of Skyrim or something similar) as a compliment to Better Males. So there will be a handful of extra mods I'd be adding in addition to the extended mods. 1 and 3 are just the nature of the beast. #2 is probably the most serious. However, even so, the videos should stay quite useful for newbies for quite a while (even if at certain points they have to modify what I am doing becuase of changes in the guide). So why even ask? Why not just do it? Well, for one thing, if you guys don't think there is a need, then I will resepct that, and not do it (I will finish up my STEP install and just fire up the rebooted Skyrim LP). But the second reason is perhaps more important. Being an amature mod installer is a two edged sword. It is good in that I can easily relate to the needs of a newbie, being not much higher up than they are. But the big danger in having a non-expert do something like this is I could very well misinterpret something and give out mis-information at some point. It would be nice if someone that WAS an expert was willing to "proof" my work, point out any mistakes so I could correct in the next video (so that anyone following along won't make the same mistake). This is also of course a benefit to me as it would make my install less flawed. So that's my pitch. If you guys want me to do it, I'm totally willing to compeletly wipe everything Skyrim related off my system (well, I'm keeping my backup of the original LP saves, just in case i can salvage it, lol), and start over again from scratch, this time on camera. I'd start with the installation of Vanilla Skyrim (I'd probalby have to assume they already have Steam installed and/or a physical copy of the game), and go from there. I'd figure maybe keep them short (20 minutes or so), so it'd end up being probably around a 25 video set, or something like that. Let me know what you guys think. Ron
