I miss having a pet. I also miss having a well paying job. But mostly the pet.

I'd love to have the option on Nexus to set my own automatic download fee. Like having the options to set a donation value of 0.01 or 0.05 for each mod I download. Even I could afford a penny per download. It seems like nothing, but if many users did something similar, the it would certainly add up over time. Maybe not to huge, life-changing piles of money, but probably more than most authors will ever receive in donations. I certainly would never feel insulted to receive a small donation, and I'm pretty sure most other mod authors would feel the same. I consider any donation to be just about the highest compliment I can receive from a user. The larger issue with small donations is that Paypal eats most of it. Of course Valve isn't going to let you beg for donations on their site. That's an attempt to subvert their payment system. They also aren't going to let you put your own Paypal buttons in the mod description. I would have been shocked if they had allowed it. In itself that should certainly not be taken as a threat to other sites like Nexus. What I'm curious about is if they'll crack down on modders linking to free versions of their mods on Nexus. I would sort of expect them to, since this could also be taken as a way to subvert their payment system.

1. After living with a cracked, hand-me-down, second generation iphone for the past four years, I finally got a new phone today. 2. I get a day off tomorrow (well, partially). 3. My husband cleaned the office and bathroom today (a rare and wonderful treat). 4. I have chocolate. 5. And wine.

In looking at it, the minimum amount seems to be $0.30.

Gopher released a video (apparently just a few hours before all this blew up), where he was speculating about the possibility of paid mods. A lot of his points have been repeated elsewhere, but he does talk about some of the potential upsides that this development could have for modding. For those who are currently only seeing doom and gloom, it might be worth watching:
-
+1 This sort of abuse of mod authors is going to do much more harm to the modding community than paid mods could ever do. We're going to lose good mod authors who aren't going to be willing to continue to put up with these hostile attitudes and comments.
-
I'm completely disgusted by the comments from users regarding Isoku's actions. Could Isoku have handled this better, probably, but the sort of hate and vitriol he's received for his decision is outright shameful. In my opinion, that sort of attitude from users is what will kill modding. Frankly, from my experience, it feels like users are getting increasingly ungrateful and demanding. If this continues to be the attitude modders encounter when they release free content, then hell yes, they're going to want to be paid in order to put up with that crap. If I received the sort of response that Isoku has, I'd be sorely tempted to just pull all my mods and leave modding, or at least pull all of the free content since no one seems to appreciate it anyway.

DarkOne has already hinted that they are considering implementing an ad-based payment system for mod authors and making changes to the page layouts to make the donation button a bit more prominent. I suspect this will push those sort of plans forward. Okay. That makes sense :) And I agree with you, though as much from a purely practical standpoint as anything. Since I doubt that I'll be buying any mods, if there isn't a version available for free, then there's really no way for me to support it.
-
Maybe I'm misunderstanding you guys, but you're saying that you'll happily report bugs and otherwise support free mods on Nexus, but if the author uploads the same mod to steam for a fee (even those, like the "Better Combat AI Donation version") then you'll stop supporting that mod? If the author continues to provide the mod for free than what exactly has changed from your perspective? Not reporting bugs is going to hurt the free version as well as the paid. This doesn't make any sense to me.
-
It's absolutely an option, at least for modders who are also putting their work on Nexus. Just send them a donation. They'll get almost all of it that way (minus PayPal's cut), and you'll be supporting their efforts to continue to provide their mods free of charge. Honestly, I feel that 25% isn't too bad. We are creating content for their game, modified or based around their content (in most cases), and generally using tools that they've provided. There are a lot of professional fields where the artist is entirely responsible for producing the work and they still end up with 25% or less. Many writers often only receive 10% of the retail price for their books, stock photographers will generally get less than 20%, and so on.

SKYRIMLE True Elk Of Skyrim (by Impulseman45)
kryptopyr replied to kryptopyr's topic in Skyrim LE Mods
I asked the author about the megaloceros. He has some really great plans for not only it, but also other animals. However, he has run into an issue with getting the meshes to work. He's gotten pretty frustrated with the project since he can't find any information that will help him fix the issue, and the modders he's reached out to are either unresponsive or unwilling to offer any advice. I know absolutely nothing about working with meshes. Is there someone around here who does, and might be able to offer him a little guidance or a few suggestions? https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/2775719-help-with-making-working-animal-meshes/&do=findComment&comment=24404349 -
SKYRIMLE True Elk Of Skyrim (by Impulseman45)
kryptopyr replied to kryptopyr's topic in Skyrim LE Mods
Yes, but their appearance isn't correct for a Megaloceros either. This mod isn't changing a Megaloceros into an Elk, it's taking an animal that displays mixed traits and making it clear what type of animal it is. Given the mixed traits that Bethesda gave these animals, I think that is a completely reasonable approach and that it's just as vanilla-friendly as any of the other 'fixes' that correct Bethesda's inconsistencies. Editing them into true Megaloceros would be equally valid, but since that option doesn't currently exist, I'll very happily choose these much nicer looking "regular" Elk meshes over the uglier vanilla ones. -
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/63243 This mod improves the Elk mesh to make them look more realistic and natural.

Why so much MO hate? (semi-rant)
kryptopyr replied to Octopuss's topic in General Skyrim LE Discussion & Support
As a mod maker and developer, I can say that I've never experienced any problems or user reported issues I could directly relate to MO other than the occasional question about conflicts reported by MO (and I get a lot more of those questions from users of NMM). I held off switching to MO for a long time because I was worried about how it would interact with the CK, TES5Edit and my other modding tools. I'm incredibly glad that I made the switch and have never had any cause to regret it. As a mod maker, I've found MO to be a great tool that saves me time and actually simplifies my workflow. It's never crashed on me or caused me any other problems. My experience with MO as both a mod maker and a mod user has been extremely positive. -
Thank you for pointing this out! I never have cared for the dialogue choices in Paarthurnax Dilemma. I've thought about making my own bypass for this quest to add to The Choice is Yours, but I've never gotten around to it. This looks like the next best thing, and possibly a better ("more vanilla") candidate for STEP.

Great idea for a pack! But I agree with dreadflopp: many people are probably going to use your list to select one or two homes rather than install them all. There use to be a great site called Oblivion Real Estate, which featured many of the best player homes from Oblivion and divided them by size the way you've done. I think it might have also have had a category for character-specific homes: those most appropriate for a mage, a thief, etc. While not essential, a short list of the stats and primary features of each house would be a wonderful touch. Things like number of bedrooms, which crafting stations are available, the amount of storage containers, display cases, and mannequins, etc. And any unique features, like special displays or animations, or scripted storage. I'm looking forward to seeing where you go with this. Good luck!

ACCEPTED High-Res Dartwing (Dragonfly) Texture (by WankingSkeever)

Well, I've been aiming for end of April or beginning of May, but I may have been overly optimistic when I said that. But I've been making good progress with it, so we'll see. -

Sound good then. Wiseman's Critter Fixes includes an improved mesh for the dragonflies. -
ACCEPTED High-Res Dartwing (Dragonfly) Texture (by WankingSkeever)
kryptopyr replied to kryptopyr's topic in Skyrim LE Mods
I'm not sure he's planning to do anything with the dragonflies (not that I know of anyway). -
Discussion thread: High-Res Dartwing (Dragonfly) Texture by WankingSkeever Wiki Link This is a retexture of the two dartwings. I realize this may be considered too small to make it onto the STEP guide, but I wanted to at least make more people aware of this mod. The current textures that STEP uses for the dartwings are from Bellyaches Animal and Creature Pack. While Bellyache's are good textures, I feel that High-Res Dartwing Texture are a further improvement. Neither mod changes the mesh, but the design used by this author helps to hide some of the sharp points and angles in the mesh, making the shape look much better in my opinion. This is also the texture I'll be recommending to compliment Complete Alchemy & Crafting Overhaul's new dragonflies.

Improved closefaced helmets version
kryptopyr replied to lexo1000's topic in Skyrim Revisited (retired)
Navida1 mentioned he would host Drizzt1666's file on the ICH page. I think that's probably a better solution than having it hosted on the WAF page. -
Skyrim Revisited Pre-Release Feedback
kryptopyr replied to Neovalen's topic in Skyrim Revisited (retired)
Thanks! I know I use to have the main file installed as well, and I couldn't remember ever encountering any errors, but it's been awhile since I've played much. Thank you for the responses. -
Skyrim Revisited Pre-Release Feedback

I understand that the WIC-Craft Only file is recommended since Wet & Cold also distributes the cloaks. Do you what happens if you use the main WIC file with Wet & Cold? Will NPCs have double cloaks and/or hoods? I'm working on further streamlining compatibility with the CCO files and I'm wondering what actually happens if the normal file is installed with Wet & Cold. -
Yep, I'd definitely recommend including Wiseman's critter and trap fixes in STEP. Honestly, I thought they were already.

Not sure if this would be considered relevant or not, but I figured I'd mention it just as a heads up. There is a new insects mod currently in development by Impulseman45 that will use vastly improved meshes and textures for the moths and butterflies. https://s1072.photobucket.com/user/Donald_Edwards/media/Lepidoptera%20%20Of%20Skyrim_zpsyxyuchte.jpg.html I'm been in contact with Impulseman and we're discussing possibilities for incorporating his new insects into my Alchemy overhaul. :)
