Star Wars KOTOR2 gets update ten years later?

Recommended Posts

So today KOTOR 2 got a pretty substantial update today. Steam Workshop for mods, controller support, widescreen support with options for 4K and 5K resolutions, and also OSX and Linux versions.

I don't know if I've ever heard of anything like this in gaming where official support for a game this old is given and they also work with modders to make it all happen. I've seen stuff like HD remakes and some older games having their source code released, but not a huge update like this for something 10 years old. The guys from DeadlyStream.com who do the TSLCRM and M4-78 mod have their excellent mods up in the workshop at launch.

I wish more games would get this kind of support. I might actually use more of my Steam library if they did.

Pretty crazy stuff, my only question is if there will be similar treatment for the first game.

At any rate, KOTOR2 is one of, if not my absolute favorite game of all time, so I think its time for another playthrough.

I'd love to see Bioware update Jade Empire too.

edit:  System Shock 2/Thief/Thief 2 getting updates a few years ago was pretty rad too.  Love this kind of stuff.

A Jade Empire update would probably end my summer. I played waaaaaay too much of that game when it came out. I tried to get back into it, but it's just gotten to old.

Wow. I owned Kotor 2 from... I guess the Humble Star Wars Bundle. This was a nice suprise to see, giving that installing mods normally for that game is a clunky, clunky process. Wow.

And widescreen without game hacking... wow. Wow. Wow. Seriously. WOw. If I wasn't sucked into Witcher 3 as much as I am, I would give KOTOR 2 a shot just to check out the new update.

EDIT: AND done by the same guys who did the Mac/Linux version of Civilization V. Seriously. Wow.

This is awesome! I still own these games on disc. I wonder I can add this one to Steam? I've spent way too many hours playing this game and would love to revisit it, modded and anew. My only concern with modding this would be the 2GB limit that this game most likely has. It's easy enough to patch the EXE on these old games yourself to allow for greater than 2GB use, but Steam's file verification does not like you doing which usually means the game won't launch until you verify your local cache...which in-turn, reverts the EXE back to the original. The update doesn't say anything about setting the flag for this in the EXE, but I hoped they did it by default with the update!

I played a much earlier version TSLCRM. Actually, I played v1 way back before the main guys started their own site, but I never got around to the droid planet. I just installed a mod that you run around the empty world, but it was just to take a look. Amazing how much they left out. AFAIK the KOTOR scene has had to make all their own tools. I don't think they had an SDK supported by Bioware. Also, both of those restored content mods had to be extracted and converted from the original Xbox disc since that is only place all the cut content was left. Pretty impressive.

Someone should tell vurt about this because he makes some mods for KOTOR2.

Yeah the Odyessy Engine is based heavily on the same engine that Neverwinter Nights 2 uses, so that helped.

I do remember something about building off the editor for NWN2 to use for KotoR mods.  I have guides I found for both KotoRs + all the mods sitting in my game installer directory, but never got around to replaying them with the restored content.  I should get around to that.

Dude updates them very regularly -  is the latest

I do think it is pretty funny how KOTOR is literally "drag and drop yer mods" compared to Gamebryo modding.

I just started another run through New Vegas but KOTOR 2 looks great with the controller update and I'm thinking about playing it again, since the controller aspect is really intriguing for me.
