I've switched from Wrye BAIN to Mod Organizer & now I'm getting frequent CTDs?

So I've recently switched from Wrye BAIN to Mod Organizer, added a few new mods to my install, made new merged patches & now I'm getting frequent CTDs?I was able to play for 4 or more hours straight with my Wrye setup & was starting to think that CTDs were a thing of the past. I switched to MO for the additional features, and that happeded to coincide with getting ahold of the merge script for TES5Edit and making several merged patches. I also discovered STEP REGS guide and added a few (not all) mods from that and some others. I don't think either MO or REGS are to blame (obviously) but rather the totality of my modding must be the culprit.

 

For background consider the following;

 

I have deleted my old saves (pre-MO) and all troubleshooting is being done with new games.I manage the game through Mod Organizer v1.2.4 (letting MO managethe BSAs)I allow MO to reorder my installed mods (in th left pane) toresolve conflicts.I sort my plugins (right pane) with LOOT.I make a Wrye Bash patch.I run the Dual Sheath Redux Patcher and move the files from theoverwrite directory into an overwrite "mod" (left pane).I run FNIS with gender specific, skeleton arm & momo jump"checked" and move those files into an overwrite "mod" (leftpane).I launch the game through MO using the SKSE 1.7 alpha.I run ENB 0.345 with the Serenity 8.2 preset (enblocal.inireserved mem:512, max mem:10240).I'm using Live Another Life and starting with the "camping in thewoods" choice which places me outside Helgen. I then go rescueRalof and proceed to Riverwood.

If anyone has any constructive ideas on how to improve my stability I sure would appreciate them. I was freezing when trying to enter Riverwood buildings or attempting to save in Riverwood before removing SIC. Now I'm getting CTD in a new game on the way to Riverwood. I'll continue troubleshooting on my own, but I'm kinda tearing my hair out by now (and I can't afford to loose much hair btw).

One thing to note: After you merge mods, if you check for errors, often there are none. But if you load up the merge esp again, many times if you check for errors then, there will be. If there are, it's bad. I've never had much luck merging a whole bunch of mods, always something goes amuck.

I remember experiencing CDTs after I used the merge script on Realistic Water Two. Even though the patch seemed to work alright (and none of the RWT esps contained any errors), my game would crash after going outside for 5 minutes. I'm not sure if it was because Realistic Water Two didn't want to be merged or that the merge script just doesn't work well with mods that big. Either way, I just stopped using merged patches entirely and my problems stopped (until I added too many mods and broke my game).

 

I'd try running the game without the merge patches and see if that helps at all.

I hear ya, I've discard some merge attempts already, but I can't sacrifice all of them - I'm addicted. I wonder if the SMIM fixes are happy being merged?

Outstanding, thanks for the confirmation on that. Things seem to be reasonably stable at this point. I dropped a few texture type mods without plugins, and I dropped the 4.25 alpha of Equipment Overhaul for the more stable / less scripted 3.13 also set the frequency for EBT from 2.5 to 5 seconds. I'm worried I'll miss SIC + HLE, but something had to give I guess.

 

Update: Looks like SMIM update 1.72 has a siingle esp for all options, so the merging is no longer an issue.

Don't merge the main Realistic Water Two file, just all the patches.  Works fine that way.

Generally speaking, I don't merge anything that has MCM menus and lots and lots of scripts or complex like Skyrim Redone (and even most of its patches).  Another tip is NOT to merge ANY patches related to Book Cover Skyrim or you will CTD on picking up skill point giving books.

 

Also you will have less issues if you merge files that LOOT places near the top of your load order seperate from those in the middle and those near the end.  You will have 3 combined files this way, but it will work better generally.

Interesting, I'll try that additional error check and see what I get. I'm going to rebuild my patches by load order (earliest, early, late, latest) to be more similar to my old BUM rules but based on my new LOOT sort.

 

I'm going to mark this as solved as the groups suggestions and ongoing trouble shooting have me able to at least play the game now (and prove that the switch to MO was in no way at fault). My compulsive modding is the enemy of stability, maybe I should award myself a chip every week I can go without adding a new mod?

After further review, you nailed it. My previous merged patches often showed errors after a relaunch of TES5Edit and subsequent error check. I deleted all previous patches, and used meticulous trial and error to make sure all further merges were error free (also free of merge created mesh & texture files, mods adding new areas and some companion mods were the culprits here).

Primary changes from last: eliminated Glorious Grass, Lush Trees & Grass (replaced with Lush Overhaul textures), bad merged patches; added Automatic Variants, SIC/HLE & SkyTEST.

One thing to keep in mind, by default you can't keep dual sheath redux patcher from running BOSS unless you use SUM (skyproc something manager?). Found out the other day when I switched to LOOT and DSR patcher kept reorganizing my load order.

 

That may or may not be causing any conflicts with load order and install order.

Add -noboss to the end of the Arguments field in Configure Executables for DSR, and you can run it without BOSS and without SUM.

Yup, -NOBOSS ftw, invaluable with Dual Sheath & Automati Variants (assuming you LOOTed first).
