Hi, I've got this issue now and I'm just about at my wits end. I have read that this is a common issue with Skyrim, and it's further complicated by the use of MO2 (I guess). I have NGVO installed through Wabbajack. Yes, I know I'm probably not supposed to ask for those issues here, but I gather this is an issue with Skyrim itself, or MO2? I don't really know. I was hoping people here know enough about Skyrim/MO2 to be able to help.

My installation folder looks like your standard MO2 installation folder (I think), but in addition to the usual "mods" and "profiles" and a lot of other folders there is also a Stock Game folder. The modlist author says it like this: "NGVO utilizes a Wabbajack technology called Stock Game. What this essentially does is create a copy of your Skyrim installation within the installation location of the list. This enables greater compatibility with other mod-lists." Not sure if this is important, just thought I'd mention it, because in that folder a file named "ControlMap_Custom.txt" is located. I saw several mentions of this file when I googled my issue. Some of them said to delete this file and the issue would go away. The problem with that is that it gets re-generated every time I start the game (or save it, or exit it, not sure which).

I'm not even sure that file has anything to do with the issue. I'm just completely stomped here. Would be grateful if anyone has some input on this.

First, you issue is not caused by MO. It is caused by one of your mods. If you are using MO, then you can search the Data tab using the filters field for files and the mod that provides them:

Look for any file with 'controlmap' in the name. It may have a different name, but it should be a TXT file. It should be under the 'interface' folder (see screen above). That's your problem. If you delete them all and one or more keep coming back, then there's a DLL (or other binary) also in the mod list that is regenerating them (presumably your Wabbajack 'mod', as NGVO doesn't seem to have such files/folders). The DLL is likely under an SKSE or interface folder, so you might want to ask on the Wabbajack curator's Discord (or whatever they use). Either that, or use a different Wabbajack.

I also don't use Wabbajack, so it could be that the problem config files are under your actual game directory. Step advises users to revert all data to vanilla via Steam before creating the build.

TLDR;

I have no experience with NGVO or the "Stock Game" folder, but it seems redundant. It probably comes from your Wabbajack 'mod', since NGVO doesn't seem to have any related files/folders. There's also some bad advice on that mod's description to set a 40 Gb pagefile in Windows. This is completely unnecessary/problematic. This mod also consists solely of 'outputs' from a mod list curated locally by the author, which means that any other mods you add (e.g., yourself or from Wabbajack) are not compatible with those outputs unless said mods are solely mods that have no impact on objects/landscape in the game (e.g., interface mods, SKSE/'runtime' mods, etc.).

Pregenerated outputs only work for the original mod list + vanilla game from which it was locally generated. I'm guessing that the vast majority of Wabbajack mod lists are NOT compatible with NGVO... at least not visually, and at most not functionally. This is why Step does not advocate the use of pregenerated outputs from third-party mod builds. We provide the mod list and build instructions, including generation of the outputs based upon the local build from apps like NGIO, Nemesis/Pandora, DynDOLOD, and xLODGen. It takes longer, but it actually works without the inconsistency problems associated with pregenerated outputs. My pregenerated outputs are for ME ONLY (or others that are using the exact same game version, mods, and mod installations of said mods, which is almost never the case: everyone customizes something).

First of all, thanks for the comprehensive answer. :)

Yes, I'm aware of the issues with doing it the Wabba way, so to speak, and was prepared to only play it with that specific list to avoid issues. Didn't foresee this issue though, oh well. The big temptation with Wabba is that it's so fast to set up, compared to the several times I have spent probably 5–8 or so hours (continuously) following the Step Guide.

About the pagefile; yes I was a little sceptical myself, as I have read countless times that messing with it could cause unforeseen consequenses.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I will go through the interface section and have a look.

For now I have made a Voice Attack macro that opens the main menu, selects controls and then assigns every keybind to what I normally use. Doesn't take more than a few seconds, so it's something I can live with worst case. :)

Side-question: Would it perhaps be possible to follow the Step guide to make a full install the way I like it, and then build a Wabbajack modlist out of it for my personal use. In theory that should be fine to use just for myself then, so that I don't have to go through all the Step guide the next time if I uninstall Skyrim or reinstall Windows or whatnot. That would be very practical.

Yes, Step's content is all CC BY-NC-SA license, so you can redistribute via whatever as long as you credit Step in your credits. Then it also has the CC BY-NC-SA license. Anyone that wants to build on your Wabbajack then must credit Step and you.

I am just curious, when you say "KeyBinds" do you mean mod added keybind added through SKSE or when you open the game menu, settings and modify core game keys?
