Skyrim and surround speakers (not headphones)

Does anyone play Skyrim SE/AE with 5.1 or 7.1 surround speakers? I notice that sound direction is abysmal in instances where you are looking away from sound sources. If I stand looking at the waterfall in all its audio glory and turn 180 degrees, it's almost gone or tin sounding. Same with conversations, etc if you look the opposite direction the sound is gone and focuses on what is in front of you. This happens to many sounds in the game, and I find it is best partially eliminated by wearing headphones in stereo mode. 

Does anyone have a fix or tips for this? It is the most annoying thing for me.

I am using Logitech Z-906 (5.1) speakers
