CTD with no apparent reason

elonin

Question

I have had ctd's in 1 in whiterun, 1 at river near riverwood and 2 at the same place on exiting bleak falls barrow.  None of these involved a great number of actors (that i'm aware of) and none involved combat.  My first thought is this may have something to do with a mod in my load order as my patches are up to date with this order.

The first step is to install and enable Memory Blocks log then play until you reproduce the crash. After the game crashes, check the log to verify the SKSE memory tweak is working and that the first block hasn't run out of space.

Where exactly am i supposed to drop those files when using MO and SKSE?  found a video that gives instruction on making a skse.ini and including that in the skse faux mod in MO.  That does give a change as after the loading screen i'm greeted with a blank screen (can't recall the colour but not black).  I'm starting to consider that i need to uninstall everything and redo from scratch as i might have screwed up one of the .ini files.

One thing to note is when i looked on my most recent memory log it still stated the default heap size and I had changed that to 768.  Not sure why the change didn't copy over.

I have done the equivalent.  Per the directions found on modderly's video https://modderly.com/skyrim-essential-mods-pack/ created folder named skse, created a .txt file. converted said file to skse.ini pasted text from the website.  then added into MO and i went the route of merging the mod though she said she prefers not to.

Like i said earlier i think i might have messed some things up with configuration so will start from scratch.

I can understand why not, but is there a guide for order of operations?

I haven't leveled anything yet, as I haven't had the time since making my last post.  When i get to rebuilding is there a generally recognized order for adding modifications and doing tweaks?  There are guides for doing many of the operations put out by gopher and gamer poets, but i haven't seen a overview.  Also is there a guide to mod order?

What i recall when i added mods I'd put gameplay mods higher on the list then textures then quests etc.  is that the same way i should add for skyrim?

Memory blocks log will show 512 for block 1 if you have the memory patch properly installed and set at 768 (it will show 768 - 256 = 512).

If it's not installed, memory blocks log will show 256 for block 1.

However, judging from your memory blocks log, the crash was not related to memory. If it had maxed out at 256 (and your max block 1 was showing at 256) you'd know it was memory. To quote sheson:

If heap memory doesn't reach the max value, heap memory related CTD that happens when heap memory reaches the max value is not the cause obviously.

I'd try crash fixes if I were you (even if it doesn't help with this reproducible crash, it'll likely help at some point). Note that if you decide to use osallocators for memory, memory blocks log will no longer record correct values, because the memory patch is no longer used/necessary.

But again, I doubt memory is your issue. If crash fixes doesn't fix your problem, try killing every unnecessary program your computer is running; as you'll see from my post on the crash fixes mod, I've just found the source of my crash-every-15-minutes problem I've been having for over a year (even just vanilla Skyrim): the Windows 10 touch keyboard service.  :>:(:

The SR:LE guide mentions legendary edition? Will this work with skyrim + all dlc? I'm presuming not due to some .ini and .exe changes that come from a merged file.

Yeah, both STEP and SR:LE assume all DLC. "Legendary Edition" is just Bethesda's marketing for having all the DLC. It's the same whether you bought them separate or as one package (they are still separate files, not a single merged file).

I know that for morrowind GOTY edition there was a different patch than just for the expansions individually.  i'll read up on those guides and check out crash fixes.  I still suspect that i set up some config file incorrectly  or have conflicting mods setup.

I still suspect that i set up some config file incorrectly or have conflicting mods setup.

I'd agree with that. BethINI is a fantastic tool to make sure your Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini are good and there are no bad settings. Made by DoubleYou, author of the STEP .ini guide.

Also, you might want to compare your SKSE and ENBoost setups with how STEP does it. Besides that, it is likely load order or mod compatibility issues. Use LOOT if you don't already, and xEdit is a phenomenal tool for patching incompatibilities with your game.

The beauty of a guide, however, is that as long as you follow all instructions, install all mods, etc. then you don't need to worry about patching the mods yourself (unless you add mods on top of what is in the guide). Each of those guides have their own premade conflict resolution patches.

Also, assuming you are currently using MO, f you have ever used any other mod manager you may want to Make Skyrim Vanilla Again to ensure there is no leftover mod data in your Skyrim/Data folder.

Good luck.
