  1. Maybe so, and I guess it could be justified through some degree of rationalization. I came up with a very convoluted story for why an M4A1 carbine was present in the Mojave Wasteland to justify that being my characters favorite gun in New Vegas.
  2. One of them (Interior Lighting Merged) is marked "Core", but do you think I'd be ok to skip all the weather/lighting mods entirely if I were to decide to use just that ENB that I found I liked, or do you think that would somehow lend to some kind of system instability?
  3. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/16898/? Better High Detail Map and Icons I feel this mod shouldn't really be included, because the map that results on the PipBoy seems beyond the rendering ability of computer software in the FO3 universe. It feels a bit too lore-breaky to me. Of course including it is really up to the end user, but maybe it should be labled as optional. I'm a picky little mofo. EDIT https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/8302/? https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/2446/? https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/430/? Omnis Hi-Res Pip-Boy 3000, More Map Markers, and FO3 Item descriptions These mods aren't packaged correctly in MO and need a notation indicating that it needs to be set to their data directory so it can be installed. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also, after installing/optimizing the Puce Moose quest mods, the sprint function supplied by FWE seems a bit...different somehow. I can't actually be sure I'm going faster than default running speed or not. It didn't seem like that last night after I test-launched. I don't actually know if anything is "wrong" or not. EDIT: Scratch that, I timed it as a point to point. It's working just fine. In terms of optimizing, I opted to go ahead and move all of the .esp's that Moose listed in the description on the nexus page for The Mantis Imperative to the optional ESP box (which includes Mantis.esp), test-travelled to Evergreen Mills in god mode (since the guide only listed that location in the entry for TMI as a possible problem location), and the interiors seem perfectly fine, so that seems to be a workaround if you don't want to bother with .esp conflicts, but if I've just done something that will net more problems in the future please tell me if you know. One deleted navmesh popped up in the LOOT report for the HeirApparent.esp. I'm not troubled by it, and am tempted to just ignore it. Any thoughts though guys? Other than all that, so far so good. And...I keep truckin'. P.S. I like how this guide is written out so far (with the little cleaning, optimize tags and such) better than any other guides on STEP. I know this is still a work in progress, but thus far it's been my favorite, and the least confusing for newbies like me who don't know exactly what they're doing all the time.
  4. Yeah. That fixed the "problem". I'll look into it more as I keep scrolling the list. On the other hand, I ended up finding an ENB that I really really really liked, and I may go with it in lieu of any of the weather/lighting mods at all. I'm not sure yet though. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/18514/?
  5. Yeah UseEffect=true. Cool, in that case, I'll just keep modding and then reasses the "problem" once I start adding graphical mods. Thanks Oh, one more question right quick... I'm supposed to be using the Fallout 3 icon to actually launch the game now as it's been rerated to use 4GB and *not* FOSE to launch, yeah? Just trying to make sure I got that right. EDIT Nevermind, when I test-launched to check the latest installed section of mods, that question was pretty much answered for me.
  6. No, just finished with Enboost. No graphical mods whatsoever. Why, is it 'sposed to look like that for now?
  7. Hey guys. Shout out to Dragon Lord. Thanks for creating/working on this guide for everyone to enjoy. I just finished installing the ENB client, and I loaded up my test character to make sure that the client was loading succesfully and all that...and it just doesn't look right. It's a far departure from how it looked after I did the basic ini tweaks. I checked and double-checked all the ini tweaks (both fallout and enblocal), restored the vanilla file then remodified it, reinstalled the enb all over again, and everything still has this really weird hazy tint to it. It's not very good-looking, and I'm just trying to figure out what it is that I missed. Thanks in advance. EDIT Sorry, forgot screenshots.
  8. Yeah, I know, not a good standpoint to jump off from. Sorry, dudes. I got the game to succesfully start. After I reloaded/ticked all mods again, I first searched any mods mentioned in F&L that had special instructions of any kind. I quickly determined that any .esp that could be declared optional already was, extracted bsas were extracted, etcetera. In other words, the hard work had been preserved. I ran through the guide and unticked every mod that in the special instructions for merged sets could be, as well as mods that I decided I didn't want while playing the game the last couple of weeks or so. Got active plugins down to 123, and that made the game actually start, which I'm going to go ahead and take as a good sign. When I loaded up my save, everything appeared as I'd left it. Modest Mouse was still blaring out of my custom radio, so I think I'm good to keep going. Hopefully. Anybody reading this, take it as a warning, don't be an idiot. Make a backup of your profile(s) before you start doing big move-arounds of files, 'cus if you don't, you'll end up going through your whole list with a fine-tooth comb and ain't nobody here going to be able to help you with more than the basics because they don't know exactly what you're doing. BACKUP YOUR CRAP.
  9. Alright. That worked easy enough. Active plug-in count is riding at around 142, though, and I know there's stuff that was checked that's not and stuff that's not checked that needs to be, so any general guidelines for applying all those steps in the F&L guide retroactively? I mean I'm not looking for a shortcut just any clear-cut warnings. Thanks.
  10. I have no idea exactly what I've done this time. I was about to start the process of using Clear and Present Danger to start modding Fallout 3, when I realized that I never got around (somehow) to moving my Steam folder out of Program Files(x86). So I went through the motions and did that, everything seemed to be working fine, but then I realized that none of my New Vegas mods were present in MO. Totally vanilla. Well, facepalm in the mirror. As you can probably guess, I forgot to save the profile and redirect the executables. I figured out how to do that with MO, then it loaded all my mods...loaded them completely unactivated, not in the fine-tuned load order I achieved with step, extracting BSA's, and yada-yada. I tried running BASHED (which worked) then tried running LOOT, but LOOT doesn't want to sort now, it's giving me the following error code... ...which I'm guessing means that somehow I managed to screw this to the point where it's not properly reading the main game as a plugin. I'm having similar problems with Skyrim, although that game actually does load, it just won't run loot for the same reason because it claims that Skyrim.esm is not first in load order (though according to priority it is.) I only bring it up because I figure if I can fix whatever I managed to screw up here, then I can do something similar with Skyrim and fix both problems. I'm really sorry. I know I'm an idiot. Well, load order for New Vegas is attached. Hopefully you guys can at least tell me where to start. loadorder.txt
  11. I found one reference to it on the Nexus forums and it's incredibly unclear what it could be related to, given that the mod author responded to it by being frustrated (not that I'm saying it's his fault because it's not, lol) and the quest it references is one that I haven't even started yet/may not ever start. To be clear, this doesn't have to do with the Inheritance mod, that's just the only instance of this happening in FNV that I can find at all. https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/891221-the-inheritance/page-77&do=findComment&comment=8756145
  12. I've had only the most minor of issues here and there, all completely able to be ignored more or less, after I installed F&L according to the guide. Now I'm getting a popup that says "In Script Block" after I sleep in any bed in the game. I have no idea why this is happening or where to start to figure it out. It could be nothing, but I don't want to be so sure just in case it's crippling some kind of quest or something (Mod quest or vanilla). Any idea how I would start figuring out what's going on? Thanks in advance.
  13. I waited awhile to play with Afterschool Special and ran into some problems with it (specifically the water buckets weren't showing up, none of the dialouge was voice [though present], and the edgecomb repiar sign was replaced by a red exclamation point sign buried halfway into the ground). I referred to the guide instructions, noticed that it recommended extracting the bsa. I reinstalled the mod entirely (safely as well) and this time did not extract it, and everything worked fine. Maybe it's just me or something I did wrong when I first used the guide, but just something to think about.
  14. I picked up a couple of errors that I don't understand in NV Bounties I, something about the "target not being persistent". I'll just as soon not merge them, I guess. I did go ahead and download inheritance seeing as it was it's own quest mod and I didn't see it as threatening to my whole save file, made a backup just in case. I'll guinea pig on that for you if you like; get back to you in a couple of days and tell you if it seems to run well.
  15. 1. I can live without Russel, and at 120 active plugins my mod count is kind of thick right now, but I might be tempted to try out Inheritance. I get very sad-sack when I get invested in things I like and they don't work right, so I'll shave off some time tomorrow to play with it and test it out. I am also very much looking forward to NVIII. 3. Check for errors using LOOT you mean? Aside from those two stray navmeshes, they seem fairly clean.
  16. I noticed that Someguy has some interesting mods that are on the Nexus but not on the F&L guide. I'm playing a character based on a clean install from the ground up of F&L, and I'm about 40 hours or so into him. I've completed most of New Vegas Bounties I & II. So...three questions... 1. What is (if any) the opinion of the F&L author on the other someguy mods? Are they safe/compatible/unknown? 2. Could I install them in the middle of this playthrough, or would that be too risky? 3. Could the someguy mods be merged in some way or another? Thanks in advance. No rush. :)
  17. Never mind. Mod please delete. Answered my own question.
  18. Pretty much what the title says. I've already modded it using the F&L guide, been playing for a while, just want to be able to listen to my own tracks.
  19. UPDATE Playing for a few days now, I still give it the all-clear. Been progressing through the DB questline with no major issues, of course continuing to do the 24 hours sleep/wait save test to be sure. Never failed that test once. All good there. I did have a couple of times where I CTD'd while experimenting with quicksaving, seemingly totally random, and it didn't happen during any intense battle or anything like that (I even once hit it in the middle of a double-dragon fight, no problems). Also, the quicksave did actually complete it's operation. I.E. when I loaded the game back up the quicksave was in the list unlike in the issue before described. Not only was it in the list, but loadable as well. I think it's safe to call that a "fluke" since it's rare enough, doesn't seem to be incresing in frequency, and I can't be bothered to solve a detail that minor unless it became bigger. So I'll just leave that one. No framrate drops, no load times that are out of the ordinary, or ILS, one random crash once while loading, but again nothing I'm gonna' fuss about too much. I did have a problem with Durak briefly, who turned hostile to me for some reason (later figured out it could be some Stendarr Vigilants I murdered because I found them annoying), but I fixed him with console commands and test-started dawnguard (successfully) to be safe, so no issues there. So yeah, nothing that I wasn't experiencing when I first started this game, and if it starts happening again, well I pretty much know the solution. Just thought you guys might like to know. Thanks again for everything guys.
  20. I would like to apologize for my very rude troll of a brother-in-law who knew what was going on, and decided that it'd be a fun joke to come in and leave that last message on this thread and remove the best answer point for phazer11. The game is STILL fine for now. I'm STILL tentatively enjoying myself, and as far as I know what I did up there is STILL a valid fix for this particular game. Nothing is going wrong yet, I will update this thread in a few days to give a report on how things are going. And again, I AM SORRY, and there is NO EXCUSE FOR MY BROTHER IN LAW! Have a good evening everyone. Apologies for the confusion.
  21. UPDATE Nevermind. Spoke too soon. Still screwed. I'm done.
  22. Alright, I've got good news. But bear with me while I try to explain what happened because I only know about half of what I'm doing, I barely understand what just happened. I just didn't think it was any of the mods, at least not from their very existence or being active. I felt that if it was, I would have had more problems earlier on, and the game was running fine until very recently (around level 38/39 was when I first started experiencing CTDs at *all*). So before I did another slow crawl, I decided to try the save scalpel reccomended by phazer11. My logic was that my Menji file was pretty much screwed, so the worst that could happen is that something I do would totally nuke it and at least make the failure to fix it final. At best, I figured it woudn't change anything. So, I loaded it up and loaded safesave2 (DB Sanctuary), and tried the following procedure/test (an expanded version of the test I've been running over and over for the last couple of days, adding save scalpel functionality. On both safesave2 (DB Sanctuary safesave), and safesave3 (the one later created in Markarth trying to trailblaze through the problem), I was succesfully able to save after completing the 24 hour test wait period using all methods. I didn't want to get too excited, but I felt I was onto something, so to be sure, I made sure the the original and still-corrupted safesave3 (Markarth) was still present (before it was modified and resaved as a new file by scalpel), and... It's been a long couple of days, but I think I got it fixed. I wouldn't have been able to do it without you guys' help. I really appreciate it and thank you, super special thanks to hishutup and phazer11. Seriously, thank you all so much. Hopefully this'll help somebody else who had the same problem. I'll keep this thread open (with mods blessing of course) just in case anything else pops up, but it does look like I can continue. I will still follow the saving indoors and no autosave rules that my friend suggested, because I still feel this is a potentially delicate save, but I think that I'm confident enough to start playing and enjoying myself. EDIT I just realized the dirty DLC plugins were created mostly or totally by the verifying cache integrity that I did with Nozzer66's help. Sorry about that, I forgot you said that would happen.
  23. I already tried that. Convenient horses popped up as a problem mod, but after some more testing safesave2 was still generating CTD's, so the slow crawl didn't really work. I'm tempted to another one though anyway. Yeah, been rebuilding bashed and everything. But with save game script scalpel I have a new problem... I can't enable papyrus logging for some reason. I've added the lines to INI, but it just won't generate the logs. I've made sure the lines are in both the ini in the My Games/Skyrim folder, and that it's edited through MO. EDIT: Scratch that. I fixed that problem. Forget to set a 0 to 1. I'll play with the save scalpel after I get back from errands today. Post the results when I get back.
  24. Yep. CTD deactivating FNIS and it's output and also, just on a whim, Convenient Horses. Tried deactivating FNIS by itself first, then that plus CH, same result both times. It's 3 AM in England, so I'm hitting the hay. I'll check back tomorrow. Thanks for all the help, guys.
  25. Verified Integrity. Loaded safesave2, did the sleep 24 hours then save test... CTD. I am officially out of ideas, guys, but I'm open to *any* suggestions at all at this point. I'll let this stay open, give you any new logs/files/whatever you guys need. Menji's been having a great journey, but if he has to stop because the very fabric of the universe he lives in has - figuratively speaking - become unstable, well...then so be it.
