GUIDE Fear and Loathing in New Vegas - Feedback

In regards to NMC's extra files, there are a couple in there that I found to be useful which you don't mention in the F&L guide. I found the Red_Wood_And_Burnt_Fence_Clash_Fix to make some seriously AWFUL-looking fences look ok. I also installed the 16-9 Ratio Main screen for NMCs Texture Pack because the Main Menu background for the game was distorted on my 16:9 widescreen monitor in 1920x1080 resolution prior to using it. -

Better than "X-Wing vs Tie Fighter" was "X-Wing Alliance" - that game was excellent. EssArrBee - maybe a week ago or so you wrote a message on here about trying out LOOT and seeing how it ordered mods, and then you posted some post-run changes that needed to be made to move the plugins into the best order. Are these changes going to be implemented into LOOT soon? Are there any other changes that should be made - you mentioned how there were some others that you forgot to write down or something? Good to see all the recent work being put in the F&L guide - great job, EssArrBee. Thank you. -

uh oh, you're not adding a UI mod in there? *slapping hand against face, while thinking about having to go through the whole detailed process of reinstalling all of the UI mods again* -

Dracomies Improved Textures 1-4 from the mod page below improves a few items. Only one texture clashes with another mod, but that's easy to fix with a file erase in the mod's installation directory. Made a big difference for me right near the beginning of the game when I grabbed the shovel at one of the water pumps to use as a melee weapon as well as digging tool early on. Made it look ok, versus the vanilla shovel. https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/39218/ Omolong is correct about the glowing ghouls. I didn't realize that before, but the changelog for FCO 2.0 says "Glowing Ghouls now actually glow and Reavers have a faint glow to them." which is exactly what the other mod says it does. I'm glad you (Omolong) pointed this out, man. What would have been nice is if the mod page for the glowing ghouls mod got a statement about it being part of FCO. -

Sometimes this game is so weird - it's running fine now. I disabled the CMO mod, started new game, ran fine. But then.... I re-enabled it, started a new game,.... ran fine. I have no idea why it ran like crap before. Really - no idea. All I did was do what you recommended so far with the new WotNM - I just downloaded it waiting for CaliberX to update. Did you check out the new NVAC mod? -

I'll test that patch you made for the water bottles mod. BTW - New Vegas Anti-Crash (NVAC) just got updated. EDIT: I just tested it and it works fine. First I started a new game and set mode to hardcore. I grabbed a dirty water bottle from Easy Pete's house, got hurt fighting some geckos, and then ran over to a water pump. I replaced the dirty water, drank the replaced water, and viewed my heath and thirst - health stayed the same but thirst dropped. Then I filled the empty bottle up, drank the refilled bottle, and viewed my health and thirst - health stayed the same but thirst dropped. NOTE: I should add to this that I use LOOT and didn't make the adjustments you mentioned that need to be made for all esps to run in the proper order. One thing I noticed though. I don't know what it is, but ever since I decided to install the assortment of new mods that you added today as well as New Vegas Bounties mod (and Someguy Series) from yesterday and upon starting the new game to test for you - the game is chugging along with crappy FPS. I don't know what's causing this now. -

A thought on the turbine issue - maybe the detachment of the object from the fixed ground position had something to do with the gunfight that happened earlier. Some explosives went off and I would not be surprised if one happened near or under the wind turbine. EDIT: I'm probably just going to restart my game and use a new game anyway... So I can add in some of these other mods. EDIT2: I actually don't think explosives have anything to do with it, because I just tested using an explosive next to the detached turbine and the blast causes no reaction on the detached turbine. I thought it might cause it to fly off in the other direction, but it doesn't appear to affect it. -

It was the big one near Doc Mitchell's house. If I slow-traveled to Goodsprings it was on the ground and the FPS were horrid. If I fast-traveled to Goodsprings the turbine was sitting upright apparently OK, unless I walked into it - then it would move and fall over, and once it started moving the FPS would die. If I started a new game (or loaded a saved game before I ever went outside of Doc Mitchell's), the turbine was upright and solid if I walked into it. EDIT: the bighorner I mentioned previously was probably already dead from a prior gunfight in town. -

So I installed Collision Mesh Overhaul and Better Metal Impact, but not without issue. I traveled back to Goodsprings and was getting horrible FPS. I noticed that one of the wind turbines was laying on the ground over a dead bighorn. I went over to and could knock it around by jumping into it. It also hurt me if it fell back down onto me. I started a new game and went outside and the same wind turbine was firmly attached to the ground. -

Do you know which of those new mods in your list (Someguy Series, NV Bounties I, Collision Mesh Overhaul, or Better Metal Impact [i don't really care to add the Dragonskin one though]) can be added to a game already in progress? I would like to add what I can without resorting to starting a new game. I really like the sound of the CMO and BMI mods the most. -

OrdinaryM - It worked for me on MO 1.2.1. You HAVE to run a bunch of those UI mods through FOMM through MO though - it's just as the guide says, and make no deviations. The UI part of the guide mod installation was the biggest pain in the a**. I had to do it about 2 times to get it right because I f'd something up in it the first time. I actually did it 3 times, because I tried to get rid of an error in MCM menu for the Flashlight NVSE mod - error still there, but the error doesn't break the mod. -

God, I'm so stupid... Tinkering around with AA some more, and re-reading about SMAA I realized that I was wrong about not being able to use SMAA without ENB. All I have to do to get it to work with FNV4GB is make sure to keep SMAA's dll in its default "d3d9.dll" filename and then place that file into FNV4GB's "exes" folder, leaving the rest of SMAA's files in the game directory. When running FNV4GB, it will automatically run d3d9.dll thinking that it's the d3d9.dll that comes with ENB. :) SMAA on ultra setting seems to do an outstanding job of smoothing edges. I mean, I can't even see the jags on edges. -

A couple ini tweaks I did that made things look much better visually in the game: iMinGrassSize=40bGrassPointLighting=1iMaxGrassTypesPerTexure=4 As far as driver AA goes, I'm having a little trouble understanding what you mean. Here's what I ended up doing: I set iMultiSample=0 in the game ini to effectively turn AA off in there. Then I went into Nvidia Inspector and tried to find SGSSAA (which I assume to translate to "Sparse Grid Super Sampling Antialiasing") in the "Antialiasing - Setting" dropdown. I could not find that option in that list. I decided to leave that setting on "Application-controlled / Off". Above that, I set "Anti-aliasing - Mode" to "Enhance the application setting". Then in "Antialiasing - Transparency Supersampling" dropdown I found "8x Sparse Grid Supersampling". I set it on that. Is that what you are referring to? My FPS are still good with that. I didn't take screenshots or anything, but I think grass is looking even better with that setting... a lot better. -

You know what? After more thorough testing I discovered on my computer that the game runs WAY better when not using ENBoost. Using the ENBoost function of ENB was causing bad stuttering in certain areas. I disabled that and it improved drastically. Then after reading someone's observation in a Skyrim forum in the STEP forums about running the ENB dlls in general, I discovered that the game runs even better when the ENB dll file is not used at all. Supposedly it drains some performance just from being run, even if you don't use the ENB graphical features. Obviously not running it at all means that I can't use SMAA now, but all I did was just use the game's AA instead and I use the maximum (16). Works great. I don't think the game's AA is quite as nice looking as SMAA, but the smoother FPS is worth it. -
So you are saying that even just using the d3d9.dll for ENBoost alone is causing a performance loss to a degree? But isn't the performance loss from using the d3d9.dll made up for by the performance enhancing function of ENBoost, when using that feature without the rest of the ENB functions? I guess you are suggesting that there may be a way to eliminate the performance loss suffered simply from using the d3d9.dll while also gaining the benefits? That would be sweet if someone can figure out how to do that.

Here's a simple one for SMAA: [spoiler=SMAA]Recommended Anti-aliasing Method - SMAA (this may be better to use than driver-based AA, game-based AA, or ENB-based AA)Link to instructions here (with modifications to those instructions below the link):https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:ENB#tab=SMAAEdit falloutprefs.ini instead of skyrimprefs.ini.Refer to Fallout New Vegas root directory instead of Skyrim root directory. I really don't have enough knowledge to expertly recommend settings within the enb .ini files. I do not know for sure what differences there are between Fallout and Skyrim from a more technical understanding, but just what seemed to work nicely for me. I realized just now also that you did mention using the ENB injector instead of the wrapper. I didn't see that note previously. So I think that at least mentioning that SMAA can be used is important. -

I had to make a lot of extra tweaks to get 2K textures and efficient antialiasing to run nicely in my setup. Do you plan on putting any section on how to do that? Basically, I had to use FNV4GB (otherwise my game would be able to start up into the main menu but not load the actual 3D game), ENB injector version (for ENBoost, fake fullscreen, and to run SMAA; the wrapper version ran with bad performance with FNV4GB), SMAA (for efficient antialiasing). I also did some graphics card driver tweaking through NVIDIA Inspector. Basically, I applied ideas from Skyrim S.T.E.P. tweaking, but I had to modify concepts a bit to get things working correctly... enough that I think it warrants an actual separate guide (versus trying to the tweaking guides in STEP for Skyrim to figure it out) to explain the differences. I think the most important thing that I did that a lot of people might not realize is using the injector version of ENB instead of the wrapper version. -

Nice - I'll make those changes before starting my game. The only mod from your list that I disabled was the Roleplayers Alternative Start mod (as well as the .esp in Tutorial Killer for that) because it seemed kind of immersion-breaking to just wake up in a bed all fine and everything after the intro video. I get the reason for the mod though and might use it in a different playthrough. -
Wrye Bash through MO to create bashed patch
oqhansoloqo replied to oqhansoloqo's question in Mod Organizer Support
BTW - I'm using Wrye Flash (yes, it's for Fallout New Vegas, but it's similar enough) for Fallout New Vegas and I'm trying to create a brand new bashed patch. I accidentally deleted the one that was originally there. Is there a way to create a new one? I cannot figure it out. Wrye Bash has an option to do it by right-clicking the "File" header in the "Mods" section and clicking on an option in there, but Wrye Flash seems to not... EDIT: found another copy of it in the mopy/templates directory and that works. -

EssArrBee - I'm confused with the "Tutorial Killer" mod part of the guide - I don't know if I downloaded the correct file and picked the correct options in the FOMOD. It feels like maybe I didn't, and the instructions in the guide don't specify, so I'm lost with that mod installation. You are like "The New Vegas Compiler". :) Great job with the guide! It definitely deserves its own background (not the Skyrim one) and also deserves a more prominent display/link to it on the site. OrdinaryM - I'd investigate through forums on the internet by doing searches for "Windows 8" + "Read-only". Or "how to make a file writeable in windows 8", or something like that. -

"Tutorial Killer" mod could use some instructions in the guide. It's difficult to tell if the FOMOD main file installs properly for the guide mod configuration - there are options in the FOMOD installer and some of them are greyed out. EDIT: Here are some mods not covered by your guide that you make want to look into because they may be able to add something - "Fallout New Vegas Redesigned 2", if not for that main mod which has a ton of conflicts with other mod content in your guide, check out this misc mod within that mod's page: "Dracomies Improved Textures 1-4". It retextures some stuff that is currently untouched by your mod list (all but one chair). "Fallout Character Overhaul - HD Teeth" Any performance mods, like "Better Game Performance"? I haven't tested that one myself yet. This one looks neat: "Water Purification Overhaul" - hardcore version. Also this one: "Placeable Lights - New Vegas Edition" -

Yes, one was copy.com and one was the original Nexus mod's link. The .esp files within the download packages with the same description were different sizes. I guess you or someone helping you made a modification to the .esp to allow it to better integrate into the guide's mod assortment? -

The link to the Couriers Stash Integration mod isn't working. Is there a difference between the files between the original link and your other link (the one that doesn't work right now)? The description does not state the difference between the two sources. -

F&L guide mod installation note: "Roberts Male Body" mod's esp file "Roberts_NewVegas.esp" supposedly is no longer necessary when the Fallout Character Overhaul is installed with the Roberts Patch. FCO's installer informs of this. So as a result, I went into the "Information" for the Roberts mod in MO and marked the .esp file in there to optional. Your guide doesn't mention this at all.
