ENB - Extreme Darkness Issues

I'm working on a new installation of Skyrim using the STEP guide (along with several of my own favored mods); after much tweaking, I've run down the lighting issues that I am having to my installation of ENB.  

 

The darkness is completely excessive -- so much so, in fact, that in interiors, it's almost pitch black.  Light sources also fail to give off any light (for example, torches) whereas you can kind of see ambient light.

I have tried some of the minor tweaks suggested on other forums on the net but none of them work.  Not a single thing puts a dent in the extreme darkness.

 

What I have installed:

ENB 119  (have tried 113, the effects are the same, and ENB 119 has no noticeable performance effects on my machine)

Climates of Tamriel

Superl3 ENB ( https://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/11318 )  [ issue persists with CoT's official ENB settings as well as the defaults with ENB 119 ]

 

Video Card:  ATI Radeon HD 6970

Average FPS: 60 (at least in this room -- so I don't think it's a performance problem)

 

 

I'm hoping someone who is quite a bit more experienced than I am with this could direct me towards a solid solution.

 

I don't want to run without ENB, having seen many of its beautiful effects in others' videos and screenshots.. that, and uninstalling it also means going through the many, many texture packs and other mods I have and removing the ENB compatible versions.  ;P

UPDATE -

 

Fixed.

Using the new update under "Files" completely corrected the over-dark issue for interiors. Thought I'd post in case someone else is running into these issues.

 

The Main download also has a PDF file that goes into a lot of detail for configuring ENBs.

Totally this. My monitor is calibrated for gamma 2.2 and I haven't had any issues with most games. They also have default brightness and gamma settings set for this already.

 

ENB configs that are tweaked for uncalibrated monitors will always look weird.

 

If you're using SkyRealism and CoT 2.0, there's no need for and Dark Dungeons mods. Just use the Cinematic preset and choose Hazardous or Hardcore Dungeons plugin with CoT. If the interiors are too dark, don't choose either Warm or Cold plugins, since they both will darken the image a bit.

Actually, it was about the ENB, too, at least for my problems.

 

If you looked at the screenshots, you'd notice that the torch on the wall was not emitting light properly. It didn't simply look weird, it was downright wrong. In fact, it looked a lot light there was an invisible point of light in front of the torch, pointing towards the wall (thus, the torch itself is casting a shadow, and the only light is against the wall). Like Neovalen described, it's almost a flashlight effect.

 

I don't like fiddling anymore with the gamma and brightness settings that I have -- turning up the brightness and gamma in such dark games makes things visible, but it also washes out the colors.

 

With the shader fix that I posted, the torch (and all other light sources in game) now emit light in a way that is more realistic. Not entirely sure what the fix does, but it does something correctly. ;) Anyhow, it may be worth looking into for users of ENB v. 119 who have issues similar to mine. I get very nice visuals now.

Your describing a vanilla problem with the game, light doesn't actually come from light sources like torches. Its abstractly placed in the scene usually somewhere behind the supposed light source and often of the incorrect type (for realism/ambiance) in order to light the room in a certain way for gameplay/performance reasons.

 

As far as your fix I'd like to see it, but you haven't posted anything at all except a link to a different ENB with no instructions.

Should have a minimal performance drop. Seems compatible with most lighting mods (RLwC, ENB, etc)

As far as your fix I'd like to see it, but you haven't posted anything at all except a link to a different ENB with no instructions.

This is correct. The opening cell from Alternate Start has the light placed behind the torch, pretty much in the wall, that's why the lighting works in such a way.

 

Try somewhere else to see the difference.

This is true, HOWEVER, why is it that only SkyRealism appears to have the issue.

 

It looks fine in Skyrim Enhanced Shaders or Seasons of Skyrim both of which use 0.119 also.

I've had my eye on this one, but haven't actually tried it yet. People say it suffers from some light pop-ins in Markath, and I'm not sure how compatible it is with other light mods such as MDS. *prays for an official TES5Edit release soon*.

I still don't get why we're not using More Dynamic Shadows. Do lights really "pop out" with that mod?

 

I'm back to re-testing the latest version of this mod since I started using Seasons of Skyrim ENB. I'll check and see if I notice anything different.
