Broken textures/effects, partial invisible npc's

Question

Posted (edited)

Hi,

After i followed the STEP:Extended guide completely something is wrong with my textures and have no clue where to look or what to do (fist time i used any mods for Skyrim), all of my textures seem to be gone from the menu screen and ingame (screenshots below), i am using MO and ran LOOT, rebuild the bashed patch and updated FNIS before running the game for the first time through SKSE in MO, nvidia cp settings are done as instructed and drivers are updated, i am logged in as admin and all executables are checked to run as admin, there is a warning in MO about several mods' load order, but the mods are in the order instructed by STEP so i think i can ignore this? transperancy AA is off and changing "bFloatPointRenderTarget" to 1 as instructed in 3.A.3. did not make any difference and all meta rules are in place.

Load Order: https://pastebin.com/m1nVgTLm

Mod List: https://pastebin.com/mTrHXHnB

Specs: https://wiki.step-project.com/User:Moloch/SystemSpecs

Thanks in advance!

Bloody hell that's a new one...

Lets start with the possible easy one.

In MO, have a look at the Archives tab in the right pane and check to see everything is there is either grayed out and ticked, or if not and it's unticked, ensure you tick it. Also tick the box that says 'Have MO manage Archives"

Run it again and see what happens.

Everything is ticked but these are not greyed out:

HighResTexturePack03.bsa (ticked in profile section but not in plugins tab)

HighResTexturePack02.bsa (same as above)

HighResTexturePack01.bsa (same as above)

Unofficial High Resolution Patch.bsa

Brawl Bugs CE.bsa

BWS.bsa

also, every time i run the game through SKSE it creates these folders and file in my overwrite: SKSE > Plugins > SKSE_Elys_AltF4.log

and when i rebuild the Bashed Patch when the guide told me to, it gave me a window titled "Deactive these mods prior to patching" with the following mods being mergeable: "Traps Make Noise.esp" and "GQJ_DG_vampireamuletfix.esp", i did proceed and merge them and they got unticked in the Plugins tab, not sure if thats what i was supposed to do since it wasnt mentioned in the guide, but found out in another thread i should merge

Edit: this is reported in the MO Problems > Potential Mod order problem:

  • Move Thieves Guild Requirements - No Auto Quest Start Brynjolf after Even Better Quest Objectives
  • Move Non-Essential Children after Thieves Guild Requirements - No Auto Quest Start Brynjolf
  • Move The Choice is Yours - Fewer Forced Quests - Improved Dialogue Options after Non-Essential Children
  • Move When Vampires Attack after The Choice is Yours - Fewer Forced Quests - Improved Dialogue Options
  • Move Complete Crafting Overhaul Remade after When Vampires Attack
  • Move The Paarthurnax Dilemma after Complete Crafting Overhaul Remade
  • Move aMidianBorn Book of Silence after aMidianBorn Content Addon

MO load order warning can be ignored. That probably needs to be noted in the STEP guide somewhere, as it does say somewhere to generally trust MO on that, I'm pretty sure.

SKSE Elys Altf4 files can be dragged from the overwrite folder into the altf4 mod in the left panel, they won't reappear in overwrite once you've done that.

The BSAs need to be ticked. That is most likely your problem. If neither the plugin nor the BSA is ticked, the textures are not being loaded at all. They don't need to be checked in the plugins tab, but in the archives tab.

EDIT: Except I unticked the HRDLC BSAs and my game looked normal. Do you have the "Have MO manage archives" box checked?

Not sure about Brawl Bugs (I think another mod includes that fix? It's not in my archives tab.)

The esps that get merged by Bash are fine as well.

Those are some awesome screens btw. Skyrim on acid haha

That sort of behavior would most likely be a driver or 3rd party application that interferes issue. It looks like a failure to render properly on just about all levels.

Try to create a profile that only contain the base game assets and SKSE, then start that and see if the problem persists.... I would expect it too.

Other than that look over your driver settings again and make sure the global and application specific entries match... try to also disable any application specific configs you might have and let it all go over global settings.

You said you installed all of STEP Extended, but that page (Brawl Bugs) says: Not necessary for Extended users that are installing Enhanced Blood Textures. So you shouldn't need it.

Also the bottom of that page also say "Tick Brawl Bugs CE.bsa" so there's a minimum of 2 steps incorrectly followed on 1 page.

I wouldn't be surprised if you've misread something else, somewhere else, as well.

Aiyen is much better qualified than me to assist, but if I were in your position I would be reading through the entire guide again, from the top, and making sure I haven't missed something else.

What did you do when you got to Enhanced Distant Terrain and Stalhrim of Skyrim? As those 2 mods do not exist anymore, and the replacement mod is not listed in the guide, nor are the workaround instructions easy to find. These mods would have nothing to do with the issues you're having, I'm just surprised that you don't seem to have asked about the missing mods at all.

created a new base game profile and started it through SKSE and strangely enough everything looks like it should be;

Edit: i do seem to have missed that, ill sort, rebuild and repatch in a sec :) (brawl bugs was however ticked though)

as for the missing mods i did as instructed here: https://forum.step-project.com/topic/7289-the-ruffled-feather-mod-collection/?p=115883

The Ruffled Feature will be updated in a day or two with a STEP installation option to make things easier. The way I've set it up, all you'll have to do is install the mod once and done.

As for your issue, when you started through SKSE and things were normal, was this on an Extended install or base install as Aiyen suggested?

base install

Then you for sure messed something up in your setup while running through the Guide. First, make sure you don't have anything running in the background that is going to be messing with the rendering. Anything that does an overlay in the game can do this. Second, go back through the Guide as Xaviien suggest because something is definitely messed up in your setup. Double check the ENBoost settings as well to make sure you have all that set properly in the INIs.

theres nothing running that should interfere with the game that i can think of, not using any overlays, even tried disabling my antivirus (panda) and closing DisplayFusion (multimonitor goodness) but it did not change anything, all windows services that i dont need are disabled, using a selective boot with only the autoruns/services that are really needed, powersaving is on high-performance, everything is updated, BIOS properly set up, no conflicting drivers, cores unparked, so things should be good on that end

will go over the guide again and let you know if anything changed :)

thanks so far for all the help!

I am not sure this applies, but is it possible that you installed multi-part mods (optionals) and clicked on 'replace' when you should have clicked on 'merge'.

i always clicked on merge when installing optionals, think it was recommended to do so in the guide somewhere

forgot to mention im using the Legendary edition, not that i think it would matter alot?

hm, the meta rule for "aMidianBorn_ContentAddon.esp" to load after "BetterQuestObjectives.esp" seems to stick (was still there from first going through the guide) but there is no checkmark on the left as there is with the other plugins i added rules to?

Maybe it's been added to the masterlist?

SRB has been trying to get most of those rules added as they are general rules, not just for STEP. It seems to be a painful process.

You could check the masterlist or user rules yaml files using notepad++, but I'm pretty sure you can just move on and not worry since the rule IS there as intended.
