Question

Hello, this isn't directly related to S.T.E.P. but more of a problem related to Skyrim. I have this really weird and annoying graphical bug that I had posted in 2 other topics on other forums as well contacted Bethesda about. So far I haven't been able to get this fixed. So now I'm going to see if anyone here knows how to fix it.

So the issue is that random textures are extremely low quality compared to the surrounding. It is always the same textures. This even happens with a clean installation of Skyrim with no mods installed and with a new game.

Here are some screenshots:

Lakeview Manor Outside:

https://i.imgur.com/0K8JNAy.jpg (Low quality rock with high quality rock)

https://i.imgur.com/mGzTy45.jpg (same as above but with 4k texture mod. Both sides did go up in quality but they still don't match)

Yngol Barrow:

Some Random Place:

Fight with a Blood Dragon:

https://i.imgur.com/3jf0P4p.jpg (The dragon magically became high quality after it was killed)

I have no idea what is going on or how to fix this. I'm hoping someone here knows what is going on.

My Specs:
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
CPU: Intel Core I7 3770K @ 3.50GHz
RAM: 16 GB
Motherboard: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. P8Z77-V LX (LGA1155)
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 7800 series

Can anyone help me with this issue?

Seems like you are having only a lower level mip map loaded... Most often this will resolve it self given time to load in all the proper resolution textures. How long it takes depend on your hardware and the load you ask the game to load in that particular instance.

It is a bit weird that it happens inside interiors since those are normally not demanding at all.

huh, the only time i see that is when my VRAM starts to get close to the ceiling and the game starts to slow down... I know sometimes the water will flicker between LODs and sometimes trees will remain their 2d counterpart...

This is my opinion on the matter:

The rocks: Most of the large rock in vanilla have problems with stretching textures over a large surface rather than tile it. If its near solitude, I know the one

The candle issue: Is probably what Aiyen said... you game seems to have trouble getting out of a mipmap...

The only thing I can think of is to reburn all the mipmaps but I don't even think that will do anything.

Idk about that one... could be one of those areas with stretching

The dragon kinda points to the same thing as the candle one

Sorry, I couldn't help more

Perhaps you can go to one of the locations and take a screenshot so I can see how it looks for someone else. These instructions will take you to the location of the second screenshot for Lakeview Manor.

Instructions:
1. Fast travel to Lakeview Manor.
2. As soon as you spawn, turn right and go to the rocks.
3. Hug the rocks while moving left.
4. As soon as you pass a pile of logs, you should find yourself going up a tiny bit while still hugging the wall.
5. You will reach the area I am talking about. Please take a screenshot of that same area so I can see how it should look.

This is very likely a GPU issue, since the assets are all vanilla and (agreeing with Aiyen) the mip-maps are apparently being invoked instead of the base texture, even when up close and without steep angles to the camera. Only the shaders interacting with the GPU would seem to control that ...

... what is your "texture filtering" level set to in your GPU driver software? Perhaps you have it set to normal or low quality? try setting that to high or ultra or whatever. See the STEP Guide for setting up the Skyrim Launcher, INI settings and GPU drier software.

Texture filtering was already set to High Quality. The STEP Guide for launcher and ini setup didn't help.

EDIT: Got a friend to help out and got him to take screenshots from Yngol Barrow and he seems to have the same problem so nice to know it isn't just me wit the issue. Would be nice to know how we can fix it as well as have screenshots from other people form the locations listed in the first post so I have something to compare to.

Certain vanilla textures (and meshes) are just low quality. That is why there are so many retexture mods.

I would be more concerned about that dragon issue. that is just wrong. Many of your other issues are not really issues at all.

Try installing STEP by carefully following all guide instructions from the beginning. If you use MO, then you can retain your vanilla setup for comparison.

Also, be sure to try a completely fresh Steam/Skyrim install just in case you have any assets in skyrim/Data that you may not be aware of. Again, using MO will make this much simpler to test and set up without fears of rogue assets in the game directory. loose files always win, so you need to eliminate that possibility.

As for the Dragon thing...

I saw this a few weeks back

No Dragon LODs by ShenziSixaxis

Rocks/Mountains have issues with a texture being stretched over a very large object without tiling properly...

Everyone has that issues because Bethesda decided that it was not an issue to fix.

Take a look at these... in the reverse order of what I think would help...

Vivid Landscapes - Rocking Stones and Mountains Two by Aron

Tamriel Reloaded - Mountains and Rocks by 32cm

ONE MOUNTAIN - To Rule Them All by Gamwich

Can you explain the 3rd screenshot under Lakeview Manor outside? That is using a retexture mod but the right side of the rock is still lover quality then the left side. I'm not really sure how this games.

EDIT: I just noticed hishutup's reply. So from what I'm getting at, the right side of the rock looks worse then the left side even with the use of the retexture mod 4k textures because the game stretches the right side? If I'm right about this, then wouldn't those mountain texture mods you sent me still have the issue with the right side looking worse then the left side or does the mods fix that somehow? I didn't really read about the mod. All I currently did was look at some screenshots. I still think it would be nice If I can have screenshots of the same area for Lakeview Manor second screenshot so I know for sure that is an area that has a stretched texture and not something wrong with me.

The Dragon mod you sent me looks like it should fix the issue the horrible looking dragons.

Some of those Mods try to fix the mountains, just in their own way. 2K should be good enough, unless you have room to squeeze 4k textures in the VRAM

Do you use anything that could 'inject' any sort of effect or settings to the game.

Like enb, sweetfs, radeonpro, fps monitoring software, driver management, anything?

In your skyrimprefs.ini what do you have these lines set to

iTexMipMapMinimum=iTexMipMapSkip=
