Crashes when looting/buying

Question

Posted

Hey guys,

Im in the process of building a new Setup.

I am using a fair few mods, and im just about sorted with the Patches etc. But im getting CTD's randomly when looting and buying from merchants.

Are there any major issues that anyone knows about, or simple tricks to use? Any mods that cause it?

Im just being lazy, and dont really want to sit here for the next 3 weeks, after work, starting a game with no mods, running around playing the game for an hour. Restarting with 15 mods turned on, blah, blah blah...

Heres my current mod list, from Mod Organizer

Im gonna have a quick play around with a few mods. Firstly gonna get rid of Dynamic Loot....its a good mod, with a great idea, but seems like a good culprit

Did a quick google, because I'll probably need the same thing at some point. You can try this ..

It's how to turn on logging for skyrim, so there may be a crash error or something that will tell you wish mod is dying. DISCLAIMER: I haven't tried this myself yet, and it's the product of a 2 minute search, so use at your own risk.

Thank you for the idea. But i always have my papyrus logs turned on. I find that having them on helps to slow down the engine a smidge to cope with the scripts...

My logs dont really show anything usefull. They are always different, never anything that can help me.

What im hoping is that someone can look at my mod list and recognise "that one mod" that causes these issues. I've gone though tes5edit and made patches for all the conflicts i can find. My mod list is currently 450 with 243 active .esp's. It would be 320 without merging my patches.

Since i last had a solid enough playthrough, there have been many MANY updates to mods, and some substitutes aswell. I've also added a few new ones. But i am positive that i have done everything i can without a thorough stability test. and i really dont have the time or effort to do that.

1. Start from scratch and play through for an hour.

2. Activate 10-20 mods, and play for another hour.

3. If all ok goto 1.

4. If not ok refine search, and test each newly activated mod one by one...

SCREW THAT. Im gonna try removing some i could possibly live without, and come back here and see if any of the super geeks have any answers.

p.s. I am using Safety Load, and i have tried editing the ini to EnableLoadOnly = true, but that makes my game even MORE unstable. I can't even get out of helgen....My game was running brilliantly without that tweak

Logging really doesn't help when you get lots of mods installed. Only the most experienced modders can even read those and interpret what they say. Looting and shopping menus get bogged down when you have to many items in your inventory.

The best way to get around this is two parts:

1) Reduce the amount of mods that add in lots of items to leveled lists i.e. Immersive Weapons, Immersive Armor, ...

2) Use a mod that allows you to access storage while you are traveling around. Convenient Horses has horse inventory, but do not overload your horse or you will crash, just remember to empty it out and sell or craft stuff.

I usually will empty out my horse as much as possible, then go out and do 3-4 dungeons/quests and then go back to a city and empty it out. This works pretty good for me.

I have just left helgen, ran through riverwood and went to the shop in whiterun.

My encumbrance lvl is 35/300

I have been using IW IA, and all the other 'item adding mods' in my list for a very long time and never had issues with them.

I use a Lydia for moving storage :)

And the papyrus log REALLY isn't that hard to understand, but having 4 logs with varying results doesn't give you a solid answer as to the problem mod. Papyrus log gives you the load order number of the esp being called. So you can see what each line is reffering too. If you have 4 logs, from 4 CTDS, and all 4 have the exact same message withing 4 or 5 lines of the bottom of the log (the crash) then its a fair bet that is the issue. So you take that mod out, and try again. Then, when the game runs fine. You can open tesEdit and figure out the issue.

But for me there is not a single corresponding message in any of my logs. And seeing as how i've added a few new gameplay mods to my list, i know one of them is the issue. UIts just too much hastle bug hunting when i can just ask the community to look and say "Hey, take that one out. Its a bugger. We have been having issues with it for a while"

Sorry to rant, just not in a good mood. I finished playing the other games, and wanna get back into Skyrim good and proper :P

I would say that your mod list is just to big and will never run smoothly no matter what you do. People always say that they can get things working until they add in a couple mods, but that just means that they already had way to many mods installed and just pushed it over the edge.

You have mods like CWO, SkyRe, Immersive Patrols, and Immersive Settlements. Add on top of that the little scripts running in the background like ASIS, Swfit Potion, Autosave Manager, SmartCast... and you've got a recipe for disaster.

I had the same problem where I set up the game and have excellent stability and then I'd push the envelope and destroy my playthrough. I've realized that you just have to tone down your load order, sacrifice a few mods, choose a few that you want for a playthrough a stick with them. After that playthrough, change it up and go with something else.

You will end up being much more happy in the long run.

I get what your saying, i know that less is more...especially with the ageing game engine that needs to be re-written and not patched.......DAMN YOU BETHESDA!!!!

Since my last playthrough, i havn;t really added that many mods. My last playthough was no more unstable than a vanilla game....if not a bit better. Im thinking that i may have cocked up with my tesEdit patches.....i might have gone too far with the cutting room floor tweaking......Patching it with IMSettlements, and IMPatrols etc. Im gonn ahve to take them out, try again. And see which mods i can live without.

Looks like im gonna have to do some indepth testing.....was hoping i wouldnt have to but i will. If i figure it out, i;ll post a report on here so other ppl can see :P

Do you use Safety Load?

I was thinking the same thing.  If you do use Safety Load you should try enabling the EnableOnlyLoading in the SafetyLoad.ini config file:

EnableOnlyLoading = true

Yes, SL can be a cause of CTD's when opening menus (barter, map, journal, inventory, looting etc). Setting it as per above will make it only switch on during loading screens to prevent ILS, and it will be disabled in game. The effect it has in game is mainly preventing game freezes, so if you don't come across those, then it's best to set EnableOnlyLoading to true.

Otherwise it's the choice between freezes and CTDs :)

Apologizes for necroing this topic, but I'm also CTD randomly when basically using the inventory menu. Since Safety Load has fallen by the wayside due to Skyrim Memory patch (Which I'm using.) it shouldn't be that. I've also heard that mods that dd to the leveled list can cause that which makes since. And if you have alot of things in your inventory then that can cause it but my weight ingame is a little less than 500, so I don't see how that could cause CTD's.

Could it be that something is interfering with SkyUI?

I know I still have trouble when accessing inventory in Skyrim crashing with too many items as well. Hasn't happened for a little bit, but next time it happens I'll check my Memblocks log to see if I need more than 512. I'm pretty sure last time it happened I had the mempatch enabled, but I didn't have the logger.

The few times it happened to me the memblocks log, at most, usually gave me numbers in the 300's. I'm trying to remember if it was high 300's or not though, but the first block set up is 512 so it still should have room to move. I'll try again and if I CTD from the menu again I'll see what comes up.

But with the too many items problem, this is happening to me when my carry weight is little less than 500 and I don't have many items on my person. So I'm wondering if something else is setting it off.

So I started a new game and the first CTD I got was from checking the corpse from a Dawnguard patrol that help kill the first dragon you fight. I had 299 out of 300 carry weight, most of it being weapons and armor that I picked up from before that I didn't sell. I checked the Memblocks log and the numbers were 300/166. I've got the number in the skse.ini at 512/256 and I have ssme.

Which version of the memory fix are you using? If it is SKSE alpha, you SKSE.ini should read:

  Quote
[General]

ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

[Memory]

DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=768

ScrapHeapSizeMB=256

[Display]

iTintTextureResolution=2048

The DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=768 refers the the total memory you are using. With the above settings you would be using 512/256. If you are using alpha and you have DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=512 you are using 256/256 and it would explain your CTD.
