0 z929669 Posted November 19, 2013 Posted November 19, 2013 Are you making certain to show thread results rather than show post results? Thread title search his worked well for me in the past ... also remember that some threads may have been renamed and that the original name might contain the search terms ... think MySQL term search.
0 rootsrat Posted December 19, 2013 Author Posted December 19, 2013 I think it searches for both titles and posts. I've seen a few posts on forums that would confirm that seemingly. This one for example.
0 z929669 Posted December 19, 2013 Posted December 19, 2013 Again, I think it works fine and that the issue is more with regard to renamed threads. To prove either way, you would need to remember your search term and one of the unexpected results to troubleshoot.
0 stoppingby4now Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 Renamed threads won't be a problem. The title is updated in the database, and there is no record of the previous name to be matched against. The exception is moved threads with a redirect. One thing to keep in mind when searching is that when you have multiple words in the search, results are returned that have at least one of the words in the title (search terms are OR'ed).
0 phazer11 Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 I've never had any problems searching via the advanced search and thread titles only when using Cyberfox, Waterfox, or Firefox, never tried Chrome, but I assume there's a problem with this site and chrome in general with the number of complaints about it.

Aaaah, THAT'S what I was experiencing! I thought it's supposed to search for the exact phrase, rather than single words within the thread title. Ignore me then, there is no issue.

This can be combined for several search terms.

This can be combined for several search terms. That's certainly useful, but generally if I want to use multiple terms they are not always adjacent. Â This is probably something I should already know how to find, but is there a description of the use of the search window in Advanced Search somewhere?

If you want search terms to be explicitly required, put a plus(+) in front of them. You can also put a minus(-) in front of search terms to filter out results. When doing a search on thread titles only, the following search returns only this thread:+titles +search +thread

When doing a search on thread titles only, the following search returns only this thread:+titles +search +threadThat example is very confusing to me ... could you either use a specific example or clarify the generalization? The above is a specific example for this very thread. The point of the search above is that the words are out of order from how they appear in the thread title. Using double quotes in the case of the above will not be useful, because nothing matches explicitly, i.e. "titles search thread". The inclusion of the + says, "This search term MUST match in order for a result to be returned". The fact that all of them have a plus means that all terms must match (mutually inclusive). That is different from just using 'titles search thread' without the single quotes, which says, "Any of these search terms may match, and in any combination". Given the above search, the following matches:Search thread titles only doesn't workBut the following doesn'tSearch doesn't workbecause 'titles' and 'thread' don't exist, and the + says that they must exist in order to be a match.
0 z929669 Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 OK, I got it. Did not notice you chose actual words for this thread ... they seemed generic ... laziness on my part I guess :P
0 mothergoose729 Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 Not very helpful, but I have given up searching the forum using the search feature. I use google, and type something like "STEP forum (search queury)". I usually double check against the STEP forum search feature just in case, but in my experience the google search has always been both more reliable and has returned more specific and better results.
