Hey guys,

I bought myself a new graphic card 2 months ago for Skyrim (GTX 680 4gb vram) to be able to play Skyrim hardcore modded. So far I havent been able to get it working. I waited years for Skyrim Mod community to develop. I tried STEP and WB with some additional mods (SkyRe for example). But the game was pretty unstable. I CTD'd and it froze pretty often. So I botched that and now tried out skyrim revisited.

After weeks following each and every instruction in the guide (I didnt install 2 things: Ars Metallica and ABT, Rest is exactly like guide stated) and the game freezes again. Sorry, for my crying and stuff but Im rly rly down.. My setup should be more than sufficient (i7 3770k, gtx 680 4gb vram, 16gb ddr3 ram). I have spend weeks in forums, people tried to help me with my step setup before and I never get any kind of stable setup.

I know skyrim engine is a huge problem, I know it is a 32bit executable but Skyrim Revisited alone shouldnt be too much for it, right? I mean people have been using it..

Anyway: My problem: Game freezes. No CTD! Game just freezes. I am around 2.6-2.8 Ram. I dont come near 3.1.

I dont know where to start? I mean its supposed to work right? Except your system cant handle it. Oh god, I know I sound confused. And I am! Its rly hot here right now, Skyrim keeps ******* me up and I have lost all hope that I will ever be able to play Skyrim like I imagined and spent money for nothing once again.

Game freezes soo fast. Cant play more than 10min. Guaranteed freeze.

Please, if there is anything you can help me with: DO IT! I am not too lazy to do any work. I just wanna play this game, guys.. Oh gawd I probably sound like a crying child whose toy was taken away .. Anyway. Are there any known problems? Is there any corrupt mod? Common mistakes?

I read the other posts, like "instability and frequent ctds" and stuff but wasnt able to find anything of value so far.

Jesus.

Last 8 Weeks I havent been doing much except modding skyrim. And all for nothing.

I am so done. I mean my spirit is broken... Yeah much frustration in this post. But please, help me. PLEASE.. : /

greetings joe

"Last 8 Weeks I havent been doing much except modding skyrim. And all for nothing."

I know the feeling bro

i spent alot of time modding, studing and everything, my last hope was SR, finished it yesterday night, it's "ok", it's not what i used to imagine, because got some weird bugs w/ animation: like npc holding weapon w/ open hands, when dual swords they go on Back but when he equip he get it from the belt and not from back...and AV not working god know why...it's very very better than vanilla, but still not 100% happy because those weird bugs.. the SR project is amazing, the problem is i did something wrong and dont know what, because folowed every line of the guide... btw i'll wait for the new guide Neo is doing and i'll delete everything and try once more, just going keep the save, wich i think(and hope) will be compartible w/ new guide

about freezes, did you checked the VGA/cpu temperature? it's only Skyrim that freezes? (since you told it's a new PC, could be hardware problems maybe)

since you are following SR, you are using MO right? you can try disable all mods and run w/ just Bathesda files and unnoficial patches, if not freeze, put 10mods, run boss to be sure they are not missing another one to run, and try again, still no freezes? add +10mods and keep going till freeze/ctd. This is what i do to find where is the problem, take some hours but you end finding wich mod is conflicting

it's all i can tell, cuz i'm new to modding too and dont have enought experience/knowledge to advice you to use some program or stuff

sry for the bad english :p and good luck,

Ok mate you need to

1. Calm down

2. Optimize all of your landscape textures to a max of 2k with 1k Normals (recommended is full 1k landcape) with 2k + 1k Normals for city textures.

3. Use alternate start to create your character. and before choosing your start point using the Mara statue go into the MCM and start and setup all of your mods.

4. Then pick "I own property in one of the Holds" I usually pick Vlindrel Hall in Markarth and then try to find a spot you can fairly regularly reproduce the freeze.

I'm working a method to eliminate most of the freezes in the wilderness but will not post it until I'm 100% certain it works for me. I totally understand your frustration I've spend several weeks installing Skyrim too and am still trying to comb through the causes for freezes such as yours. Mine usually happen in the Wilderness. I would also like to mention that the 3.1 RAM limit is a baseline and yours my be lower or higher (lower it sounds like) The only surefire way to avoid it is to decrease your texture resolution as I said above.

Try to do the following in MO.

Move the Optimized vanilla textures and DLC ones to the bottom of the mod order. This will make sure that vanilla textures will overwrite any other textures. This will reduce the texture memory use by huge amounts and should make the game "stable" assuming that memory is a predominant issue.

If it still does it after this treatment then you most likely have some mod conflicts which cause the script engine to stop functioning.

The guide is only a general guide atm, and in no way a finished optimized product. It is vital to keep that in mind. It is up to you to optimize and make it stable on your hardware. Me and many others here will be happy to help out, since most of us have the same issues.

Oh also for SkyRe you should install it after the main Skyrim Revisited guide and follow.

Link:I plan on doing so as soon as I finish re-installing Skyrim Revisited now I have all of the DLC.

i'm even thinking on not play now and just play in some months... (i just started playing), I also bought a new computer to play skyrim only, but not as potent as yours, i got a i5 3570 w/ 8gb 1600mhz (you REALLY will never use your 16gb on gamming) and a ati sapphire 7950 3gb, I can play full SR w/ around 35-40 fps, so your config will ofc play it very smooth

Are your freezes just outdoors or indoors too? Any places you get a guaranteed freezes?

My suggestions would be:

DDSOPT landscape mods (Foundation except for WATER) to 2048 for most textures and 1024 for normals. Probably Automatic Variants too.

Do not use the z-Fighting .ini changes.

Reduce the various shadow settings in Skyrim Prefs back to 2048 or 1024.

Also use the Medium resolution addon for deadly spell impacts! That fixed Most of my freezes. I currently get 1-2 freezes in 4-5 hours gameplay and if so then on the exact same spot twice. I save directly before the Spot, reload and everything Works out perfectly (no RAM issue).

I optimize anything with a texture folder to 1k with select things being 2k with 1k normals (mostly interior objects). It's not that I can't tell the difference between 4k and 2k or 2k and 1k but tbh I'd rather have a more stable install with fewer problems than more eye candy. Follow my suggestions above and you should eliminate most of your freezes and then you'll need to troubleshoot any other mods that may be causing problems.

@statsmonster Aiyen and I also discovered another likely culprit for spell related freezes. If you still ave problems after optimizing Deadly Spell Impacts either optimize or disable Burn Freeze and Shock Effects.

As others have stated, and it cannot be emphasized enough...

If you are following the Skyrim Revisited guide, no matter how great your PC is, you absolutely must optimize your textures and half your normals for all major landscape mods. There is simply too much in the guide that your computer/game are going to be doing to not improve your base install by skipping this critical step.

In addition to optimizing your landscape textures and large texture packs, you should halve your normals, use 2k textures where available (stay clear of 4k texture packs when installing Skyrim Revisited the first time) and optimize your Automatic Variants textures and halve the normals for all non-large beast races (don't do giants, mammoths, etc.).

With the increased popularity and traffic Skyrim Revisited is getting, more and more new users are trying it every day so it's important that you don't go pushing things beyond the Skyrim Revisited guide before you know if your machine works properly with the base guide installed. This makes it easier for us as well to assist you in working through issues if we know you have a similar setup of mods in place.

Once you have a full Skyrim Revisited install in place, using just the guide, with properly optimized textures ensure your game works properly; play for a few hours and get into outdoor and interior areas to get a feel for the guide and how it works on your machine. Once you have a baseline of how things are going you can then work to either address issues your having with the community here, or tweak the install by adding or modifying things and testing further.

Welcome to the community and don't give up, you have a huge resource of helpful people here to assist!

If you are really tired of having stability issues the easy solution is to remove potentially problematic mod from ur modlist.

Mods that add new spawn:

SkyTEST, Immersive Creature.

I experienced freezes when aggroing mobs from these mod and crossing a river.

Mod with constant script update:

Frostfall

Realistic Needs & Disease

Wet & Cold

SkyRE combat rely heavily on scripts.

If you use SkyRE + deadly spell impact + burn freeze shock. That's a lot of combat based script spam.

If you use all these listed mod together there's a high chance you will freeze.

In my opinion the 3.1 ram limit is not the only skyrim engine limitation.

The number of papyrus script that can be executed simultaniously does not seem to be infinite.

To FCqt's point and to expand on it...before even adding SkyRE Combat or other SkyRE mods...new users should ensure they have a solid and stable Skyrim Revisited install going first and foremost. Once that's established and kinks are worked out, adding more complex script-based mods or heavy texture mods can be tackled.

Adding these to a base install before understanding how the game runs for you only complicates matters and exasperates the problem.

Agreed. Though I disagree with Neovalen's suggestions in some cases. I think mods such as Immersive Creatures and SkyTEST should be installed last and individually as they modify alot of AI and add so many creatures.

i know this sounds stupid, but try taking turning off SMIM in your Mod Organizer, and all related patches.....In my testing ive found it to be the main problem with outdoor freezing, i cant figure out why, but it definately the culprit....

Besides, the only thing that not having SMIM means is a few less rounded fruits, and the ropes are a bit chunky...i can live with that.

Heres my thread i started, and my latest list of mods and DDSopt choices......

Just backup your MO folder, and give it a try.
