Need help understanding ERM - Enhanced Rocks and Mountains DynDOLOD Mesh Rules

Question

Posted

I'm trying to install ERM - Enhanced Rocks and Mountains properly and it says:

"The recommended DynDOLOD mesh rules are mask=mountain, LOD4/Level0, LOD8/Level0, LOD16/Level1, (LOD32/Level0 if running ACMoS). The performance impact is minimal, regardless."

What exactly does it want me to do? I don't have a mesh rule called "mountain". I figured out how to add a mesh rule, and I assume I type "mountain" in Mesh Mask / Reference FormID. What do I do after that? Should I check VWD? What option do I choose for Grid and Reference?

https://dyndolod.info/Help/Mesh-Mask-Reference-Rules I read this but I'm still not sure what to do. Thanks.

Also tick VWD, select FarLOD and 'Unchanged'

Since by default there is no such rule yet, most of the meshes will match the last "/" rule. Look at it for comparison.

Adding/Inserting the new rule for "mountains" will change the LOD model used for LOD Level 8 to the same LOD model that is used for LOD Level 4. See https://dyndolod.info/How-LOD-Works and https://dyndolod.info/Help/Object-LOD

See https://dyndolod.info/Help/Grass-LOD#Performance for an example of such a rule for "mountains".

Check the VWD flag so that the rule applies whenever a LOD model exists for a full model that matches "mountains" in its filename, just like the default "/" rule. See https://dyndolod.info/Help/Mesh-Mask-Reference-Rules#VWD-Visible-When-Distant

Set Far LOD (or Near LOD), so the LOD model is used for dynamic LOD. See https://dyndolod.info/Help/Mesh-Mask-Reference-Rules#Grid and https://dyndolod.info/Help/Dynamic-LOD

Use Unchanged so the dynamic LOD model unloads when the full model loads when its cell attaches. See https://dyndolod.info/Help/Mesh-Mask-Reference-Rules#Reference

Been following the recommended rules and the large reference fix is functioning, but I am getting some pretty bad zfighting in certain areas on the mountains in lod 4 / level 0.  Also using the latest BethPIE settings.

Almost as though the almost like the full object is clipping with the lod 4 or something?  It only happens after I generate dyndolod, without is fine.

Read https://dyndolod.info/Official-DynDOLOD-Support-Forum#Post-Logs which DynDOLOD log and debug log to upload when making posts.

See https://dyndolod.info/Official-DynDOLOD-Support-Forum#In-Game-Screenshots how to make a useful screenshot of an affected full model with more informative console and a close up of the LOD area.

Generate LOD with the default rules for comparison.

I am running a few trials/tests to see if I can diagnose the case.  If I am unable to solve after a few more tries will assemble n post detail as per instruction.  would it be beneficial to record a video to show the z-fighting?

I am also using EVLaS ... is enabling the rule doublesidetexturemask=mountain, mnt not something I should be doing with ERM and just use the Underside feature?

Report the actual problem or error message without making unverified assumptions or asking leading questions. Read the explanations and tips below, especially about what information and logs to provide and how. Also see Don't ask to ask, just ask and How do I ask a good question? Try not to make posts that only promise more information, logs, results etc. in the future. If it takes time to first gather information, logs, results etc. it is fine to just take it and then post when ready.

It is unclear what running a few trials/test is supposed to mean. The first troubleshooting step would be to determine/report the actual type of z-fighting and where exactly it happens.

Yes sorry, I was mostly just tangent self diagnosing.  I was able to fix it but will share the requested logs and screen shots this eve if it's still helpful data.

1.) I was installing two mods + fomod options that were conflicting/incompatible with each other.  Once I addressed that, most of the z-fighting was mitigated.

2.) I was COCing to the exterior location, which I guess I'm never suppose to do for lod sake.  Using LOD Unloading Bug Fix after COCing and going into an interior cell resolved a lot of my problems.

https://dyndolod.info/FAQ#Object LOD shows in active exterior cells
Known as stuck object LOD after fast travel engine bug that can happen after fast travel especially to/in Whiterun. Consider using the dynamic LOD option of DynDOLOD which should fix that bug. If dynamic LOD is not used, use the LOD Unloading Bug Fix.

LOD Unloading Bug Fix is unnecessary when using DynDOLOD with the dynamic LOD option as it also fixes the particularly fast travel LOD bug that mod fixes. Check for related message in the log. Using coc typically does not cause any issues with LOD. Read all answers for the FAQ entry.
