Absurb File Size for DnyDOLOD Generation

Question

Posted

I was going through the process of generating precache grass, LODs and 3D trees for DynDOLOD, and normally it would have only taken about half an hour, an hour at most, but for some ungodly reason it too 16 hours and 160GB of space to generate... I was following the step modifications guide only.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

To potentially drastically reduce generation time, disable all of you driver-related software via Task Manager. On AMD, Adrenaline and other related AMD background processes can kill gen time. NVIDIA has its own processes, so you should be able to see them.

Will try this, thanks.

Some tree mods are very performance heavy (e.g., Veydogolt and Aspens Ablaze). If the LODs use the base un-optimized crowns of such tree mods, the BTO files can be huge and require many times more draw calls. Compare the file sizes of the LOD trees against the base trees. Most LOD NIFs are about 70% (ish) the size of the base NIFs. Truly optimized LODs will be one tenth or less the size of the base models.

I'll check Fabled Forests's tree LODs here in a bit, going to see if I can finish up this current gen process right now. It's been running for 2 and a half hours with 50GBs already.

... well, I just checked, and the difference in hybrid LOD size compared to base tree size for many trees I've done ranges from about 10% to 70% the base size (without crown optimization).

LODs should ideally be < 100k

That doesn't sound quite good, I imagine that's the case?

That will cost gen time, output size and FPS. Your driver software can drastically increase gen time, regardless of LOD sizes as mentioned.

Not sure what you mean by driver software, but I do have the latest versions of my drivers. If you mean something like Afterburner, I can add an OC clock to my GPU real quick.

But yeah, in terms of generation, I'm on LOD level 4 for tamriel right now and each coord is taking about half a minute to a minute to complete.

I think you musunderstand. These are the processes I kill before running any LODGen and grass gen processes:

You should have similar processes for AMD/NVIDIA. Kill them. It might vastly improve gen time, but that still may require 2+ hours if you have huge LODs.

Okay, I see what you mean. Yeah, I do have NVIDIA software running in the background. But killing these processes only brings them back online.

Try killing those any anything related. Your drivers still are working via OS-related config.

Unfortunately, no luck. I think this may be an SOL situation, and that something is just not right with my DynDOLOD config. I may try resetting it to the default settings and giving it a go.

You should be running the latest Alpha 155. If so, then post this info in the DynDOLOD support forum with logs.

So I reset the settings for the DynDOLOD program, ran a test run and it only generated about 1GB of LOD data. Reapplied the settings from the guide on this site and it is now back to taking ages.

Generally, all workspaces process fine and in a reasonable amount of time of course. But, the Tamriel workspace is taking ages and has not passed level 4 LODs in the last hour. I'm suspecting it's because I used Level0 for LOD4, but I am not sure. All settings in the screenshots of the guide are 100% replicated.

Aspens Ablaze appears to be used in that tree mod. I suspect that it also is using the quality lods for it. Install the Performance version from our mod here and see if that fixes it.

Will do, thank you for bringing that to my attention. I've been letting it sit for the last three hours and I noticed it has finally moved in to the spring and summer seasons. I am generating seasons too by the way.
