Multiple Conundrums That MIGHT be connected

Question

Posted (edited)

I want to start out by saying that in terms of DyndoLOD, xLODgen, and xTexGen. My efforts have been successful. I thank the authors of these guides for that and some discord folks I know. But ive run into two issues that I think might be related

My Grass LODs never work. IN TAMRIEL. They appear to work in Solsthiem. and Other locations but they dont work in tamriel specifically. I dont know why, and I haven't seen any discourse on an issue like this either.

But I believe the issue is related to how my MO2 interacts with Grass PreCache.

My Mo2 HARD Freezes/Crashes when Grass Pre-Cache completes. It becomes un-interactable and the error message box that i believe is supposed to be the "Grass Pre-Cache is complete" message is blank and frozen on screen. I have to end mo2 using the task manager. and because of this I am forced to manually go into my skyrim file folder and delete the grassprecache.txt that locks your game in precache state. I believe this hard freeze of Mo2 is preventing whatever final process needs to happen for my Grass LODS to appear in game. Mind you, the dyndolod, and texgen all recognize that i have the needed files for grass lods. It's just that those grass lods dont appear in game. also another detail, is that I do in fact, take the grass module out of my overwrites and place them in their own mod in mo2.

anyone seen anything like these two issues?

1. Mo2 Hard crash and freeze at end of grass pre cache

2. Only tamriel is missing grass lods.

So you evidently are running SSE old version 1.5 97 with NGIO?

Have a look at our Grass LOD Guide. Try using that process in it's entirety to get things working. Specifically, "Worldspaces with Grass SSEEdit Script for No Grass In Objects" will prevent grass creation in n/a worldspaces and speed up the process. There are also other tips for optimizing the process, like reducing your display resolution and using/configuring SSE Display Tweaks.

See our System Setup Guide for general environment considerations and MO initialization and install methods. This advice is important for avoiding these sorts of issues when related to your modding environment config.

Beyond that, you can uninstall MO and Skyrim and reset your entire modding environment, but that's more work but worthwhile if you continue to have issues. Last resort would be complete OS reinstall and clean config of everything, but that's a very last resort.

You posted your questions/issues in the STEP Guide forum.

Are you following the Skyrim SE STEP Guide or not? If you are, there should be no need for you, or way for that matter, to generate the grass cache. I'm asking to better understand the context.

If you are not following the STEP Guide, which instructions are you following to generate the grass cache, if any? Are you using the 'PreCache Grass' plugin in MO2?  Which version of Skyrim SE are you using for playing? Are there files named Tamriel*.cgid in your grass cache mod folder? Do you get full near grass (i.e. not grass LOD) in Tamriel?

We need a lot more information in order to help you.

If the grassprecache.txt file still exists, the grass precaching has not completed. Skyrim SE by way of NGIO automatically removes this file upon successful completion. When the completion is successful, the MO2 'PreCache Grass' plugin displays a popup saying "Grass precaching completed. - The grass caching operation was completed successfully". This popup is displayed only when the grassprecache.txt no longer exists.

If I'm not mistaken and I'm remembering correctly, there are 2 popup messages at the end of a successful precaching: one from Skyrim SE itself (I don't remember the exact message off the top of my head), and the other one from MO2's 'PreCache Grass' plugin. Each one has a button to dismiss them. You need to dismiss the Skyrim SE popup first, then switch to MO2 and dismiss its popup.

It can be confusing at first because Skyrim SE popup message is often hidden behind other windows, or it's visible but it doesn't have the focus, so can't be clicked on. So I'd recommend keeping Skyrim SE in the foreground while generating the grass cache. That way you don't miss its popup message when it's done. If you still don't see it, minimize all windows to the taskbar so you can see the desktop. The Skyrim SE popup should be somewhere visible and accessible.

I am using the info from this guide here SkyrimSE:Grass LOD Guide - Step Mods | Change The Game (stepmodifications.org)

Specifically step 5 and step 6

Your info regarding the skyrim SE pop up might be behind another window might be extremely useful. I was so focused on the fact my MO2 seemingly crashed that i could have missed it. Ive done the grass precache step multiple times though, so i wonder if if i was daft enough to miss it everytime.

I would always also use Step 3 as I mentioned above ... at least the worldspace selection piece. You can get failures at times when including n/a worldspaces.

sorry I am obtuse. I did all the steps. I only mentioned step 5/6 because I thought it was relevant. I STARTED from step 2 because I already had some of the mods step one mentioned. I actually do have the world space stuff too. did the xedit stuff it entailed. did the NGIO ini set up. My grass Pre-cache only takes like an hour 20 if even. It's just at the end, my MOS2 becomes uninteract-able.
