STEP:Extended Proposal

From Step Mods | Change The Game
STEP:Core Flowchart

In order to collect everyone's thoughts in one place (and make sure everyone has the correct Wiki editing privileges), here's a list of all the mods in v2.2.9. Make sure you use the sectional "Edit" links or you'll surely have trouble finding the right place to edit. Doing small edits will also (hopefully) prevent a lot of edit conflicts.

On this page, Tick green.png will represent the mod being added to STEP:Extended while Cross red.png represents removing the mod from STEP:Extended. For a better understanding of what STEP:Extended should consist of, see the STEP:Extended Mandate.

  • Under Arguments, bring up any reason to go one way or the other and precede them with "[[File:|24px]]" to generate the icon.
  • Under Votes, sign with either "{{icon|type=yes}} ~~~~" or "{{icon|type=no}} ~~~~" (four tildes creates a signature) signifying your opinion on whether the mod should be Core or not.
  • {{icon|type=yesyellow}} (Tick yellow.png) signifies an undecided or constitutional vote. Please provide in parentheses ( ... ) your conditions.

I just want to start by saying that I don't see any issue listing "STEP approved" utilities on either Guide. They are tools rather than mods so having them all in a Pack (to be install on top of Core) doesn't really make much sense, IMO. Listing them on the STEP Guide and pointing to their individual, respective guides makes more sense. Else, if dropped, they may not ever get mentioned at all and many users may not ever know of their value. That should sum up my vote on the tools in this section. Techangel85 (talk) 23:56, February 25, 2014 (EST)

What about Optimizer Textures and ConSkyrbe? You still want that in there? Your point makes complete sense, and I like the idea of having them listed on both guides. DoubleYou (talk) 00:24, February 26, 2014 (EST)

Not necessarily. That is why I said, "STEP approved" utilities. I don't know of anyone that uses those two you mentioned. Techangel85 (talk) 00:47, February 26, 2014 (EST)

EssArrBee brought up a good point below. If the benchmarking aspect is going to remain part of the Guide then so do all the tools required for said benchmarking. Techangel85 (talk) 10:12, February 28, 2014 (EST)

Blessings-Altar Descriptions

I don't agree with Kelmych's and Essarrbee's reasoning here. Basically they are saying they want to keep it because it makes the game easier (even if it's a small aspect of it). The information about the altars is there for those that take the time to find it. I don't think we should be including mods that make the game easier in any aspect unless it's a function aspect should as dialogue controls. The only logical reason for keeping this would be the argument that the PC would likely know information about the different religions practiced in his homeland as many of us do in real life. TechAngel85 (talk) 10:19, March 20, 2014 (EDT)
It seems to me that you would be right about people knowing the religion if they lived in that world, but we don't live there. We have to play the game when life gives us the time and it is just annoying activating a statue and it gives you an effect that you thought was something else. Dungeon Quest Awareness

Cross red.png Adds information the player should find out on their own. DoubleYou (talk) 23:46, February 25, 2014 (EST)
Tick yellow.png Depends. If this prevents players from starting areas that have quests attached and thus could break the quest, then we need to keep it. Which according to the Nexus mod page, this is exactly what this mod does. If no quest are actually broken by entering an area early, then it can go. Techangel85 (talk) 22:14, February 27, 2014 (EST)
Tick green.png Provides information about dungeons with non-radiant quests so they don't get broken. The game should prevent accessing these dungeons but doesn't always do so, breaking immersion and potentially breaking quests. Kelmych (talk) 01:40, February 28, 2014 (EST)

Tick yellow.png I'm neutral, as I have not looked into exactly what this does. DoubleYou (talk) 23:48, February 25, 2014 (EST)
Cross red.png Honestly, this is not needed and I don't see it as a fix. It just remaps some keys and I've never played with it. There is nothing wrong with vanilla mapping. I've used vanilla key mapping since day one. I don't think we should be supporting a mod the changes the key mapping either, as this could force users to "relearn" the keys that they've most likely used for a long time. The rare user who wants to remap their keys, can do so on their own. Techangel85 (talk) 22:23, February 27, 2014 (EST)
Cross red.png I use this mod since it disconnects the vanilla key bindings in which the numpad keys and number keys are linked (noticeable reducing the number of potential hotkeys) and because this, or an equivalent, is needed with MoreHotkeysPlease!. Tick green.png I like this mod as it helps me keep track of time while gaming. For those that cry out the "immersion breaking" argument, I'm calling BS on that. It's no more immersion breaking than the loading screen it's on. Is it an improvement to the game itself? No. Will it hurt keeping it in Extended? Cross red.png I only like the lanterns in town, the road lanterns just seem out of place. Essarrbee (talk) 03:21, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Tick yellow.png Lanterns in a town/village and on roads close to any town/village and near inns seem very reasonable, but other lanterns don't that are far from any community or business (inn or tavern). Unfortunately NPCs use vanilla lighting and don't need torches/lanterns and can easily travel at night, although recently there is a mod that might fix this (I haven't tested it). Currently the only menu choices are lanterns in villages and lanterns on roads; I'd like a third choice for roads near towns/cities (and establishments if feasible). What's the best way to handle this game limitation? Perhaps the author will be willing to have a version with some of the lanterns removed Kelmych (talk) 15:38, February 28, 2014 (EST)

Most of the compares on already in the mod threads. It'll only take a quick look as to why there is a compilation of certain areas and the discussions for them. No need to redo what has already been done. I think if we "simplify" the guide too much then we'll end up losing some quality. Compilations is also how we've always done it; taking the best from multiple mods and showcasing it. I think the high praises we've been getting from users is also proof enough that we're doing it right. TechAngel85 (talk) 18:56, April 2, 2014 (EDT)

Tick yellow.png Unless we can replace it somehow. DoubleYou (talk) 23:57, February 25, 2014 (EST)
Tick yellow.png If we're just using this for the feet then we should use FemFeet instead, unless this "foot wrap" doesn't just lay on top of the body and also includes the feet in the texture (like a boot). If it does, then we should keep it regardless of using a female body replacer or not.Techangel85 (talk) 23:44, February 27, 2014 (EST)

Tick yellow.png I've not tried them out in-game; however, in most of the shots I've seen they look out of place with the rest of the textures in the game. Enhanced Blood Textures

A note about why I disable screen blood: I mainly play in third person so screen blood makes no sense for that view; however, if you think about it, it doesn't make any sense even in first person. The blood splatters on the "screen" thus breaking immersion because it clearly looks as though it has splattered on a camera lens. If blood were to get into the eyes, you'd be blinded first and then possibly have blurry vision for a bit...not see through the blood splatters as if you're looking through a lens. It's just plain unrealistic. TechAngel85 (talk) 14:05, April 6, 2014 (EDT)

Skyrim Performance Plus

I think we need to see some performance data on this one before deciding. We can gather up a few users with lower-end systems that match or are close to the minimum STEP requirement and have them test it for us. A very quick and dirty FPS compare is all that is really needed. I could probably do this on my friend's laptop. In fact, I could take my video card out and test this using the integrated Intel HD 4600 on my CPU as well. Any users that we know of who could test this? I think Torminater also has a low-end system and he'd be willing. Techangel85 (talk) 10:34, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Torminater has reported back that on his lower-end laptop, he did not see any difference with this mod enable vs disabled. The same FPS resulted. The only thing it might have done is save a tiny bit of VRAM. Techangel85 (talk) 21:14, March 2, 2014 (EST)

Cross red.png I have a hard time believing this actually improves performance on any sort of modern system. On my last system, I didn't see any change and on this new system I can't find a place in Skyrim that I drop below a solid 50FPS. Techangel85 (talk) 00:25, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Tick green.png I actually think it belongs in core. It's one of only two texture mods in STEP that attempt to improve performance, and we still have a lot of users with low-end systems. The STEP guide minimum system is very low end compared with the recommended system. Kelmych (talk) 02:01, February 28, 2014 (EST)

Radiant and Unique Potions and Poisons HD

Votes

Cross red.png Has conflicts, would prefer more testing, not sure if the style is quite right. DoubleYou (talk) 00:10, February 26, 2014 (EST)
Tick green.png The vanilla game has only a single bottle for all potions and another one for all poisons (as does SLOD), and I find this immersion breaking for characters using alchemy or magic (what happens if you grab the wrong potion!). This mod adds a set of meshes and textures that provide diverse bottle shapes and colors for different potion/poison types, similar to the game improvements that Book Covers Skyrim provides for books relative to vanilla. Some don't like the saturated colors of the bottles; I like them a lot but for those who don't we should ask the author for an alternate less saturated version. It should be loaded after SLOD and needs only 3 textures hidden, and has a few simple conflicts with USKP. Kelmych (talk) 02:39, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Tick yellow.png I agree with Kelmych. The conflicts it causes would affect affect pack authors, but this is not a Core mod so that is irrelevant. The other thing it may conflict with is CFF, if kryp decides to address bottles. Essarrbee (talk) 03:39, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Tick green.png I also agree with Kelmych. The bottle diversity is important. I am one of those that doesn't care for the overly saturated bottles because they stand out too much and possibly even more so if we decided to add a recommended ENB into Extended. We could ask the author for permission to make a "less saturated" version or ask if he/she would be willing to make one for the users that are bothered by the saturation. Tick yellow.png I see this as fitting the mandate much more that any other smithing mod. Maybe just drop crafting mods and get a crafting pack going. Essarrbee (talk) 03:49, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Tick yellow.png Vanilla smithing has some noticeable gaps including how it handles faction armor and the limited number of craftable item types it handles. Ars Metallica is a reasonable smithing mod that fixes part of this, but can't be configured and needs 3 plugins. Complete Crafting Overhaul Remade has more features, better compatibility with mods that add craftable items, and has a fairly large MCM configuration menu that can change parts of what it does including making it closer to vanilla (e.g., ore smelting (Much more ore)) and adding some lore-friendly ore names. Tick yellow.png I've never used horses in Skyrim so I tend to skip this mod in my personal installs. I understand for those that do use horse this mod is a massive improvement. Techangel85 (talk) 01:06, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Tick green.png I never used horses until this mod, and now I can't play without a horse. Essential for playing without fast travel. Essarrbee (talk) 03:49, February 28, 2014 (EST)

Follower Trap Safety

Votes

Cross red.png While this fixes stupidity in followers constantly triggering the same trap, I don't think it is right to make followers immune from triggering traps. Better perhaps in a follower-related pack. DoubleYou (talk) 00:17, February 26, 2014 (EST)
Tick green.png I'd rather have a follower overhaul of some sort that includes this, but until then I see this mod as a fix for the terrible follower "engine" in Skyrim. Techangel85 (talk) 01:06, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Tick green.png If the AI in game was better I'd say no, but it is to terrible not to use this mod. Essarrbee (talk) 03:49, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Tick green.png the engine doesn't handle followers and traps properly, so this mod is needed as a fix Kelmych (talk) 17:49, February 28, 2014 (EST)

Oblivion Gates

In light of all this being lore friendly, I vote to move this to Core. No it's not in the vanilla gate; however, it should be for any familiar with Oblivion and lore. TechAngel85 (talk) 17:45, March 11, 2014 (EDT)

Votes

Cross red.png This is Skyrim, not Oblivion. DoubleYou (talk) 00:17, February 26, 2014 (EST)
Tick green.png I'm pretty sure the War of Oblivion extended to Skyrim as well, and it really wasn't that long ago in-universe. Should be kept for immersion. WilliamImm (talk) 22:24, February 27, 2014 (EST)
Tick green.png Although it's not important and could be dropped I have to disagree with the reasons being stated for dropping by DoubleYou. Just because this is Skryim and not Oblivion makes no sense. The gates are lore friendly and it can be debated that they are remnants from the time which Oblivion took place. The lore can be found: here, here and here. Although the story of Oblivion took place in Cyrodiil, the gates were open across all of Tamriel which Skyrim is a part of; map. One can conclude that gates would have also existed in Skyrim lands as well. So finding an Oblivion gate should not be something out of context in Skyrim. If we don't take this into account then we're saying that oblivion gates only existed in Cyrodiil which isn't what the lore says. Yes, one can debate, "wouldn't they have torn them down?". Well, if they could then why didn't they tear them down in Oblivion to prevent the Oblivion Crisis in the first place? Techangel85 (talk) 01:06, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Tick green.png I don't notice it enough that it becomes bothersome, but I do notice it enough that it is part of the scenery. Very nice touch. Essarrbee (talk) 03:49, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Tick green.png I agree with Arthmoor that these gates are a key part of TES Lore and they wouldn't have vanished completely after Oblivion. Having them in the outdoors vs. cities makes them more realistic for me Kelmych (talk) 17:54, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Tick green.png NOT a Core mod though, since this adds new models IIRC ~z929669 Ixian Insignia.png Talk 12:36, April 7, 2014 (EDT)

Tick green.png I love this mod. We need to instruct users how to set it up in the MCM though. Techangel85 (talk) 01:06, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Tick yellow.png Personally I think this adds a bunch of cloaks and stuff that is a bit of a stretch from vanilla. Essarrbee (talk) 03:49, February 28, 2014 (EST)
Would clocks "and stuff" not have existed in such times? I think so. Remember, this isn't Core and doesn't have to adhere to Vanilla as strictly, especially in this section. If it makes logical sense, it's fair game to be added/kept. I think the effects from this mod alone are enough for it to be kept, regardless of the items it adds (which can be turned off in MCM). Techangel85 (talk) 10:53, February 28, 2014 (EST)

Tick yellow.png this is an excellent mod, but is only useful for thief characters. If STEP Extended is going to include some mods that are only relevant to a portions of the users but work well and provide some fixes and improvement while remaining reasonably true to the vanilla game, it's fine with me. However, if we include this mod in STEP Extended then we should include other similar mods like ESF Companions that provide equivalent functionality for a different guild (Companions). Unfortunately there does not seem to be an equivalent mod for the Magic College. Kelmych (talk) 01:40, March 1, 2014 (EST)

Dropped Mods

  • Nitpick REMOVED - Not needed with Mod Organizer, even possibly conflicting with Mod Organizer.
  • HD Rabbits Plus REMOVED - The HD rabbits are not sufficiently better to warrant a plugin spot.
  • Ice Wraith REMOVED - The vanilla textures fit into the game better.
  • Elven Weapons for Silence REMOVED - They don't fit Cabal's golden Elven Armor, as these were intended for the black and gold variation of Cabal's.
  • Designs of the Nords REMOVED - Has conflicts, doesn't seem to fit the Skyrim style. Looks to new and fancy.
