Skyrim No Start, ENBoost Warning

Question

Posted (edited)

As far as I can tell, I have followed the STEP 2292 directions to a "T".  But, it won't start.  I get the initial screen, spinning logo, ready to select new, then a RED WARNING splashes onto the top of the screen stating that ENBoost Speed Hack is running without graphics.  As far as I can tell, those are the specific instructions for setting up enblocal.ini, aren't they?  As SOON as that flashes up on the screen, my hard drive light just stops.  So, I 3-finger salute, open Task Manager --> Skyrim Not Responding.  Does someone have time to look over my three main ini files, please?

Hi Allen,

Please use spoiler tags for long strings of text like that; it makes things looks so much cleaner. Highlight the text you want to be affected, click the button to the left of font, and select "spoiler".

It would be great if you could edit your post. See the STEP Community Citizenship Guidelines regarding Posting for more details: https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:STEP_Community_Citizenship#Posting

Regarding your query:

"ReservedMemorySizeMb=64" should be set to 512 as per the guide. Start at 512 and test at progressively lower values until you experience stutter. At that point the setting is too low.

You are looking in the wrong place for your Skyrim.ini and your SkyrimPrefs.ini. MO stores these separately for each MO profile. Go to "[...]\Mod Organizer\profiles\[name of your profile here]". Again, please read the MO Guide. It is very useful.

Edit: Also, it would be good to know your SKSE.ini values.

Thank you, I'm saving your message for my future guidance in addressing the forum.  Some day, I'll do something right, huh?  Since the initial Skyrim run (pre- or early-S.T.E.P.) generated Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini, I mistakenly have thought all along that those were the ones to edit.  Should I delete them and move them to Profiles, in case I need to restart Vanilla Skyrim for some reason, then Skyrim would generate a new one), or should I leave these edited inis there?  Meanwhile, my SKSE inie (from D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\SKSE):

ScrapHeapSizeMB=256

It doesn't matter if you leave them for now, as you can always regenerate new .ini's in the default My Documents location by deleting them and running SkyrimLauncher.exe again.

One way or another you should get the .ini tweaks STEP recommends in the MO profile, though, and once that is done, test it to see if the problem remains.

Nope, same thing.  Opening screen, ENBLocal.ini warning that it's not supposed to be set up that way (I assume that's what the red color means),  then the hard drive stops spinning, and Task Manager reports Skyrim Not Responding.

Ignore the red warning from ENBoost. This is just an informational message saying the graphics features of ENBoost have been disabled, and this is is correct for STEP. Run Skyrim again and wait a few minutes after that red message shows up to see what happens.

Make sure the SKSE.ini is the one found inside the SKSE Scripts mod, or another mod of your choosing, that is loaded from MO.

Although technically it shouldn't make any difference, after my recent install of the complete STEP guide I only had an INI in the Skyrim install, not loaded from MO, and although it had the correct settings to avoid a common ILS problem, incorrect memory settings, I was getting an ILS. Only after deleting the one in Skyrim and loading one from MO was I able to start the game.

As I say this shouldn't make a difference but it did for me. Maybe you too.

As for my SKSE program, skse_loader.exe is loading from D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\skse_loader.exe (that's the Binary).  The Start In is D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim.  Does that mean it's not even seeing the skse.ini because its in the Skyrim\SKSE folder?  Or does it just pick it up from there?  There's no skse.ini in the Skyrim root directory

As far as I can search, there's only one SKSE.ini in the entire Skyrim directory, under Skyrim\SKSE.

Oh, and I am initiating SKSE through MO, not as a separate program.

If you are using Mod Organizer, SKSE.ini should not be in the Skyrim directory and this is most likely the cause of your problem. The SKSE.ini file should be in the  SKSE mod like this:

@aba42

May I remind you of the STEP Citizenship Guidelines. Take note of point 3 under the heading of "Posting".

We can all appreciate you want to get your game up and running but just curb your enthusiasm and allow us to attend to matters. ::):

The event log reports are of no use to us here, we are modding forum and they will possibly be of better use by a Microsoft support team, if such a thing exists. However they do look like you have issues with the executable. Try a verification through Steam to acquire a new one.

Well, DRAT.  I've got TWO of them.  One is in Skyrim\SKSE, the other is where MO installed it, in Skyrim\mods\Skyrim Script Extender, as your diagram shows.   Let me change the path to the file and try it again!  DRAT!!!  By the way, this is the text of the Skyrim Script Extender skse.ini:

[Display]
iTintTextureResolution=2048

[General]
ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

[Display]
iTintTextureResolution=2048

[Memory]

Don't know why there are two "[Display]" settings, should I remove one?

Ok, I apologize.  Back to basics.  I wish to use the skse.ini file in the Skyrim\mods\Skyrim script extender folder.  I don't understand how that changes either the "Binary" or the Start In for SKSE in MO.  How do I get the skse_loader to point to Skyrim\mods\Skyrim script extender for the skse.ini file?

That is, should I just uninstall and reinstall SKSE with MO (following the S.T.E.P. directions again)?  Or just delete or rename the one that's in Skyrim\SKSE?
