Question

Alright, so I installed STEP, and I have the same rig as the guy had in the guide you, but I get some crazy lag spikes when I play Skyrim with STEP, and I've compressed the textures and didn't activate SSAO so it should be fine, and the thing is I can still run games like The Witcher 2 and Battlefield 3, which are very demanding.

I think the problem is something on Skyrim itself, because I have the latest drivers and stuff, the same rig as the guy and if he can run it fine I should be able to do so too, so I mean is there any way to fix those crazy lag spikes? a INI tweak or something?

Also I've disabled all sound mods because I always had CTD with them enabled, even with the fixes turned on and even with them almost #1 on the load order, I reduced some of the view distance settings and anti aliasing and it only did so much, I still had crazy lag spikes, like when I switch cells it's even worse, load times are huge, and even when I open the map it takes some time, but it's not only loading, I can walk a bit smoothly but then a lag spike comes and it takes a while to get back to normal, more often than not I find myself having to open the task manager, or alt tabbing the game and it helps a bit but still, if I have the same rig than the guy and he runs it, I should be able to do so too, I dunno if I am missing something here, but this makes the game unplayable and unenjoyable, what should I do?

I assume you are running version Skyrim at patch 1.6? There are reports all over of issues with it, including bad performance and CTD's. Part of it is surely that not all mods have been updated yet, and I blame the rest is due to beta cycles that are far too short to get anything fixed.

Alright then, I am gonna disable steam's auto updates and redownload Skyrim and then reinstall STEP, and hope it works...

That will not work because if you download Skyrim it will automatically install 1.6

If you have a CD you can install Skyrim 1.1 but that version is so freaking bugged and not at all supported by the STEP mods anymore.

I've been playing for a couple weeks now on a 1.6 install with almost zero crashes, although I used Mod Organizer to install my mods and started a new game.  Before you go blaming Skyrim, first ensure that you have a completely clean copy of the game and have installed all of the latest versions of the mods properly.  This post (in the spoiler tag) provides a very thorough guide on creating a clean installation.

Thanks for the info, and it just made me more worried, long story short, I've never ever had lag spikes in Skyrim, but now even with the clean copy of the game I am getting some now and then, which worries me a lot, because like I said, I've never had this problem before, and it started kinda randomly, my games weren't running as smoothly as they were before somewhere around friday 22, I tryed to find other ways and excuses but I guess it will all come down to me formating my PC... Well thanks for clearing that up to me and only one strange thing to note is that even thought I deleted the .ini files, they were created again not clean but the same way they were before, I've noticed it because the 3rd person camera was centered unlike vanilla, but I guess it doesnt have much importance, just tought it was strange

might've been a mod causing this via scripting.

it could be hardware related, like you have already concluded. Just try to keep your rig as clean and safe as possible!

try out the mod on this website:

That is a great little app!  I've tried a few of the on-screen display programs but none of them worked properly for some reason.  This will definitely come in handy for testing :D
