question about download names on MO

Is there a way to expand the name category on the downloads side of Mod organizer. Some downloads are very poorly labeled and I like to make the names more descriptive and some download have name that are long enough that you cant read the whole name under the file names header. I have tried making the column longer but it doesn't allow me to see the whole name. Is there a way to see the whole download name and if not could you please fix this?

Doesn't hovering your mouse over the name bring up a tag with the full name?

Unfortunately there is not a way to modify the downloaded mod names from the MO interface.

 

The column headers you see at the top of that pane only allow you to sort the downloaded mods by name, file time and done status either ascending or descending. The length of the names look like they are hard coded into the program.

 

You can of course let MO download your mod to the download directory and afterwards rename the zip archive and its associated meta file. Both have to be named the same. Granted it is not an elegant solution, but it works.

 

I do not recommend downloading manually and renaming it at that time. The mod will not have an associated meta file and show up as not having any information. You will have to query the info and in my test the correct information, name and version, were not available from the selections that were given.

 

If this is a feature you like, I encourage you to sign up to the MO issue tracker and create a Feature request.

Yes, hovering your mouse over the name will do that as long as there is not a red triangle. The line in the meta file to do that is modName=. Editing that line may be a more elegant solution if you do not mind the name in the download pane.

I'm not sure if you understand my question. I already know you can go into MO downloads and change file names.Lets say I download Skyrim realistic texture overhaul Dragonborn 1K and skyrim realistic texture overhaul 2K.(just an example I'm not sure if I have it exactly right.) Under the Download header in Mod Organizer I might only be able to see Skyrim realistic texture overhaul Dragonborn than the name runs out of room after the word Dragonborn. Now I cant tell which file is the 1K and which is the 2K.I hope this is written clearly because I'm kind of in a rush in real life and cant right a more accurate posting right now. But def appreciate the help and advice I receive here

I'd advice against renaming the files on disk because as long as you keep the original name MO can warn you if you re-download the same file again.

 

One thing I could do is add a toggle to show mod names instead of file names (where available) but of course the mod name could still be too long. But this would lose information (i.e. 1k version vs. 2k version)

 

Another option would be to trim the name to the first n characters and the last n characters.

I.e. instead of "Skyrim realistic text..." you would see "Skyrim rea ... erhaul 1k"

I guess in most cases this would provide more information.

 

Finally, I could add the full name to the tooltip

Hi Tannin. As you know MO is already an awesome tool. I just like changing file names because as we all know its not a perfect world and some Mod authors just don't take the time or possibly know how to name their mods appropriately such as naming a textures download just "texture". Actually beards and brows are a good example. If you download the files it just comes up as high res in the download section of MO. High res what? There are hundreds of texture mods on Nexus so it is nice to know what the filename is especially if I put skyrim away for a year and decide I want to play it again. Maybe its just me but I like a lot of info and things organized. Its almost like MO need to point to the Mod name at the top of the Mod Page to retrieve the name of the file. The only problem with that is it would need to figure out if files are 1K or 2K ect ect because some Mod authors have multiple download names on one page. The only other thing I wish you could change is when I install a mod I like to rename them also. For example If I install Even Better Quest objectives there are about 20 patch downloads and Im just not a big fan of merging esp. (if that's the correct term). I like to install the patches seperately so that they show up on my installed mods list individually. That way if I install a mod ill know there is also a patch since I can physically see it. I hope what I just typed made sense. I guess the only reason I like to keep them individual is so that I can remember that there are other options for certain esp. that I normally wouldn't see if they were all merged under one Mod name. But as I said earlier I would not trade in MO for any other Mod Manager because MO is awesome and I hope I'm not sounding like I'm complaining. Hopefully I'm just throwing other ideas out there.
