CTD Randomly When in "Potion" Section of Inventory

Question

Just what it says on the title. I tried figuring this out on my own since it only happens very infrequently with no consistent trigger that I can detect. I don't believe I have any mods that affect potions except for the STEP Extended mods, but here's my load order anyway:

I remember having the same type of problem before, and I'm not sure how I got rid of it. I don't know if it was potion (I did have loads of items), it might have been. I wish I kept a log of every CTD I came across and fixed, I'm feeling stupid now, what if some old CTD comes to haunt me later... But the chance of that is very low because most of the mods I use are either made or updated during and after 2013.

But, this problem seems so old like I had this back in 2012/2013, mods back then had so many bugs and conflicts a lot time and the unofficial patches were updating constantly during that time and Bethesda were still working on patches. The rapid updates made my save games increasingly unstable and put me off playing Skyrim for a long time, well until I remember what I have been missing.

I wonder if any old forum threads exist anywhere that report how to get rid of this issue. I'm kind of surprised that during this day and age there are still some Skyrim mods/patches used which are really outdated, or... mods that slow the game down and bloat save games slowly, and later you realize that it is too late to go back and change something.

Having a second look at your load order, I can only say that it is time for a cleanup and get rid of some mods or pick an alternative, even for those mods that you can't go without and aren't in any of the S.T.E.P guides, plus being legitimately reported as buggy, slow or just outright non-compatible. Start a completely playthrough and rigorously test it to ensure you won't get CTDs like this when you worked so hard on your player character. Believe me, it's worth it even if it takes weeks or months, obviously you have to consider if you love Skyrim this much or have time to do this, it is really up to you how you want to go about this.

I wish I had an answer on this problem, but it's gone with the passage of time. I can only say good luck.

I've not run into this problem myself, but it seems like I remember seeing something that suggested CTDs could be caused by potions that didn't have any effects.  This was on a modding page somewhere that recommended always using a blank or dummy effect on potions to avoid this problem (if for whatever reason you didn't want them to have any active effects).  Not sure if that's the cause of your problem or not, but if you have any mods that add potions, it might be worth looking into.

That's bizarre. I don't think any of my mods explicitly add potions, is the thing. I mean, unless it's some extraneous part of one of the larger content mods I have? Does anything stand out from my load order?
