Question

I just reinstalled Windows 7 x64 from scratch and am having some really odd behavior with Mod Organizer 1.2.14 that I'm hoping someone can help me figure out. Prior to reinstalling Windows, Mod Organizer was working beautifully and I have full backups (using Acronis Backup and Recovery) going back a couple months that I'm using to compare the setups using Beyond Compare to make sure nothing is missing.

I basically just deleted and re-created the partitions on the SSD and installed Windows 7 from a UEFI USB drive, installed all the Windows updates, installed Steam

  • Deleted and re-created the partitions on the SSD (C:)
  • Installed Windows 7 x64 from a UEFI USB drive
  • Installed all the Windows updates
  • Installed Steam
  • Ran Steam and had it install Skyrim, all the DLCs, and Creation Kit
  • Ran SkyrimLauncher.exe once to let it create Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini and download the Steam mods
  • Deleted the Steam mods from the Skyrim\data folder
  • Copied the ENB files and Vividian preset files from a backup.
  • Copied the Mod Organizer folder back to its original location (D:\Program Files\Mod Organizer)
  • Copied all the mods back its older location (C:\Skyrim\mods)
  • Ran Mod Organizer to verify everything looks good

What's strange is that every time I run Mod Organizer, it removes DragonVoiceShout.esp and BlockSparkles.esp from loadorder.txt; disables "Snowbound Acres - Point the Way Compatibility Patch", "Improved Weapon Impact Effects Correct Metal", and "Dragon Shout with Voice from Location" from modlist.txt, and removes DragonShoutVoice.esp and BlockSparkles.esp from plugins.txt.

I also see these two entries in mo_interface.log:

22:09:01 [W] plugin DragonShoutVoice.esp not found
22:09:01 [W] plugin BlockSparkles.esp not found

I don't know why Mod Organizer is logging that it can't find these two plugins because they exist in exactly the same location and with exactly the same names. I don't see anything logged regarding "Snowbound Acres.esp" and it looks as if it picking the "Snowbound Acres.esp" from "Snowbound Acres" instead of from "Snowbound Acres - Point the Way Compatibility Patch".

What's more confusing is that after Mod Organizer loads, I see "Dragon Shouts with Voice", "Improved Metal Impact Effects Correct Metal" and "Snowbound Acres - Point the Way Compatibility Patch" so Mod Organizer is actually finding these mods but it keep disabling them for some reason.

Make sure the plugins.txt and modlist.txt you are restoring actually match the profiles they were from. Maybe you had those mods in a profile and now you don't or the other way around.

Everything MO uses to generate the UI is based on text files for plugins, mods, profiles, etc. If something is not right check those files to see what is missing/extra.

Also 1.2.18 is out and fixes a number of issues that you might come across if you stick with 1.2.14.

I restored Mod Organizer from the backup last night, and they do match. I haven't made any changes since I installed Vividian ENB a few weeks ago and I also compared the profiles and mods with a backup from last week to verify they are identical to the ones I pulled from last night's backup.

I'll try Mod Organizer 1.2.18 to see if it resolves the issue.

I tried Mod Organizer 1.2.18 and this didn't make any difference. I then decided to manually enable the mods and moved them back into the correct order in the left pane. When I compare the original modlist.txt in the backup, three somewhat subtle differences appear in the diff:

Snowbound Acres - Point The Way Compatibility Patch
Snowbound Acres - Point the Way Compatibility Patch

Dragons Shout with Voice from location
Dragons Shout with Voice from Location

Improved Weapon Impact EFFECTS Correct Metal
Improved Weapon Impact Effects Correct Metal

EFFECTS vs Effects really stood out, but I had to peek really close to see the difference between the and The, and location and Location.

The first one is the name of the mod in modlist.txt and the second one is the name of the folder in the mods folder. I don't know if these were installed this way (not likely) or if I renamed them in the left pane either during or after installation (more likely), but it is somewhat puzzling why it was working before I reinstalled Windows and is bombing now. In any case, Mod Organizer picks up all three mods correctly after I renamed them in modlist.txt to exactly match the folder name.

@Greg

Well spotted, glad you got it all sorted. I just did a check by renaming a mod to lower-case and MO did indeed notice the difference.

This is a good piece of knowledge to keep in mind, MO's list loading routines are case-sensitive.
