Textures not appearing in game using Mod Organizer

Question

Posted (edited)

Hey all,

So it's Christmas holidays once again and I decided to do a full Skyrim reinstall with all the latest STEP goodness. I am following the STEP 2.2.9 guide installing all Baseline (green) mods as well as a few of the grey ones if the description sounds interesting and doesn't require much heavy work on my part like restructuring folders.

I have done many installs in the past (the last one being Jan 2014) using MO and I have never had the issue I'm having right now. All mods seem to be installing properly, as indicated by their direct presence in the game and menus upon starting up a new game (i.e. SkyUI, CCO, RaceMenu, Alternate Start - Live Another Life). However, no new textures seem to be loading.

I did a search and noticed someone else had a similar issue recently (https://forum.step-project.com/topic/6670-textures-not-appearing-in-game/?hl=%2Btextures+%2Bnot+%2Bloading&do=findComment&comment=107723) but unfortunately his resolution (ENB/ENBoost) doesn't apply to my situation because I already have ENBoost installed and active (to my knowledge).

My Archive Invalidation checkbox is ticked in my profile tab and all checkboxes are ticked in the Archives tab as well.

I've been doing this install fairly meticulously and have been conducting benchmarks with the carriage scene all the way through (with everything consistent and frame rates not really dropping at all). Also, the rocks/trees haven't seemed to have changed at all, and since I had just completed step 2G of the guide (Landscape & Environment) I found this odd.

In order to test out my suspicion, I installed Alternate Start so I could run around and take some screenshots. Sure enough, everything looks AWFUL. Check out some screenshots here (https://imgur.com/a/ZHaTm).

As one final test just to satisfy myself that I'm not imagining things, I installed a custom texture pack that I had created for my last install with very hi-res textures (as in, so high that I ended up not being able to play it because my frame rate was too low). It's the last thing on the load order and all signs indicate that it should be overwriting everything previously installed. Load up the game, and nothing is there. The LAST picture in that IMGUR album I posted is an example road texture from my custom pack... that's the kind of thing I should be seeing in game.

As I mentioned before, I've used MO before and have never had this issue. On my last install I was able to use MO to check texture packs as quickly as clicking a button, loading up a save game, and immediately seeing the effect on the rock/tree or whatever I was standing in front of in the save game.

I really hope I'm just missing something rudimentary and won't have to start from scratch!

Mod Organizer screenshots showing load priorities and also that the textures are visible in the 'data' tab of the right pane of MO:

https://imgur.com/a/Nz6r7

EDIT: added more info in the form of INIs, screenshot links, etc.

EDIT 2: I'm not sure if this is indicative of anything, but as another test I thought I'd throw the texture pack directly into the main install directory. I totally expected that this would cause the textures to load, even though it defeats the purpose of MOs MO (virtual file structures). Well, they still didn't load. This was loading the game via MO-SKSE.

EDIT 3: I tried loading the game directly with the skse_loader.exe in the main game directory, bypassing MO completely. Obviously, no mods are installed, but HOLY CRAP the game looks WAY better. I am now officially at a complete loss for what is going on with my install :(

EDIT 4: Sorry for all the edits, but as I try to work on this before anyone posts any responses I'm trying to make sure all the info is current. As I was starting up the game bypassing MO I noticed that even the Skyrim dragon on startup looks way better. Check this out: https://i.imgur.com/QFvWFpn.jpg The dragon on the left is what I get when I load up Skyrim by bypassing MO (double clicking skse_loader.exe in the main Skyrim directory). The dragon on the right is the one I get when loading the game up through MO. At this point it appears to me that something to do with MO is loading the game up on MINIMUM graphics settings, but I have no idea why or how to fix it.

After hours of tweaking, trial, and error I think I've discovered my problem.

All things considered, after my last edit to my original post I figured it had to be some kind of INI problem.

So, what I did was I compared my MO INI files with the default INI files in my "\My Documents\my games\Skyrim" folder.

Looking at SkyrimPrefs.ini, the only significant differences between the two where I had absolutely no idea what they controlled were iTexMipMapMinimum and iTexMipMapSkip. In the default INI these values were both set to 0, whereas in the MO files they were set to 9 and 3, respectively.

I changed the MO INI values both to 0, and problem solved. I knew it right away because right after changing those 2 values to 0 the loadup dragon motif looked like it's supposed to. Sure enough, I can also now activate/deactivate my custom texture pack and notice the difference immediately upon loading a save.

As much as I am super glad that I've solved my problem, I'd still love to know why this happened, if anyone can provide comment on it. I have no idea why those values were set to 9 and 3 in the first place... I certainly didn't manually edit them in there. And it's my understanding that MO INI files are created from the defaults when you create a new profile, so if the default INI had the correct value, where the heck did the 9 and 3 come from? It also makes me wonder if any other of my INI settings are totally FUBAR from what they should be.

Also, why do these values affect texture loading like they did? I'm not knowledgeable enough in texture mapping, etc. to know exactly what these parameters control.

Anyway, thanks for reading, and hopefully if someone else runs across this issue this post will help solve the problem.

Couple of points.

Those settings relate to MipMaps, so yes, your textures will be affected.

MO gets its ini values from the default settings Skyrim generated after the initial game run, so any values assigned to the MO settings would be those. Were you tweaking settings inside the MO GUI and maybe adjusted something inadvertently? Maybe clicked a setting in the Configurator?

Hi GrantSP, thanks for the reply.

I did use the Configurator in MO for making INI changes, but as I mentioned in my post I was very meticulous in my setup, and the only changes I made were the ones found in step 1.D. of the STEP 2.2.9 guide. I suppose I have to admit a slight possibility that I may have inadvertently changed those settings, but I honestly don't think so. I was being VERY careful. I'm only admitting the possibility because technically it's possible.

Any idea what these values represent? As in, what exactly is it telling the game when you change it from 0 to 4, etc.?

Also, is there a particular setting these parameters SHOULD be at for good quality AND performance? I currently have them set at what's found in the VeryHigh.ini default file... iTexMipMapSkip = 0 and iTexMipMap Minimum = 4.

I joined just now to say that I have the exact same problem. Textures that are loaded up in my MO are not appearing. This is most evident by looking at dungeon walls for me. I have all of skyrim 2k lite installed and there are a couple things I'm not sure about.

1) The load order of skyrim HD 2k lite. Of all the videos I've watched, they seem to just place it wherever they want and magically get the graphics to load without a problem.

2) I checked the same files that Lanyon posted "iTexMipMapMinimum and iTexMipMapSkip" in my MO skyrim prefs ini and they are both set to 0, I was really hoping it was that and I could be on my merry way this Christmas eve but that doesn't seem to be the case.

3) I also seem to have a problem with the textures for faces (Better Females by Bella and Better Males) does not seem to be working, yet the Ethereal Elves mod is working for my character..

So I have no clue what's going on. I also downloaded aMidianborn book of silence (the main texture mods) and I cannot tell if they are actively being used alongside 2k HD lite or not. It's rather frustrating and any help really would be appreciated!

Have you tried placing the face and other texture mods right after Ethereal Elves to make sure it's not providing the vanilla assets for the other races? As for the

"iTexMipMapMinimum and iTexMipMapSkip"

Delete those from whatever .ini they are in. I'm not sure if Skyrim HD 2k Textures covers dungeons. It's been a while since I used it so I can't be sure.

Hi EdZero,

Can you post a screenshot or two of your MO window showing your mods list?

For your point #3, there's an easy way to see if your mod is actively being used or not.  First, look at the mods row in the left pane (where you can tick the box to activate it). Does it have a lightning bolt with either a green + symbol, a red - symbol, or both?  If so, that's the flag to let you know that it has files that are replacing or being replaced by files from another mod. To see the specific conflict, just right click on the mod row in the left pane, click Information, and click the Conflicts tab. That'll show you conflicted files that are provided by the current mod, and conflicted files that are overwritten by other mods.

Another way to see if your mod is adding things where they should is to look at the Data tab in the right pane. First, right click on the mod in the LEFT pane, click Information, then click on the Filetree tab. Find some file that's in the filetree... let's say textures\dungeons\dragonrunealphabet.dds (I'm using the Dragon Glyphs HD as an example). Now if you look on the RIGHT pane and click the Data tab, you should be able to go down to the textures\dungeons folder and find your file (in my case dragonrunesalphabet.dds). To the right of it will be the name of whatever mod is supplying the file (in my case it's Dragon Glyphs HD - Fixed). If the mod name is WHITE it means that this file is only coming from one of your mods. If it's RED it means that 2 or more mods are trying to supply the file, but the one named is the mod you're getting the file from (the mod that is overwriting any other trying to supply the file). If you hover your cursor over the red mod name a tooltip will pop up letting you know what other mods also have the file.

Using this info you should be able to determine if any aMidianborn Book of Silence files are being overwritten by 2k HD Lite or not.

I hope that helps!

Hopefully this can be sorted out..

Oh yeah, I'm having a problem with my face mask mod where the colors aren't appearing as well, not sure why that is..

EdZero,

I can't reply much here or look into this in any depth as I'm expecting company over for Xmas dinner any moment :)

However, a quick look at your photos and I noticed something wrong right away.

Disclaimer: I'm no MO expert, but I'm a fast learner and I discovered and learned a lot while I was researching and figuring out my own problem.

The issue I noticed with your images right away is that your aMidianborn Book of Silence mods are greyed out and italicized in the left pane. According to the Mod Organizer Guide here (https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Mod_Organizer), this means that the mod "does not contain any data that Mod Organizer recognizes as valid mod information" (go to that Guide page and do a text search for "italic" and the first entry will be where it says this).

Now, it also says that this should be accompanied by a red X in the Flags column of the left pane, but that's not showing up here. Do you remember there being a red X in that column at any point and you removed it somehow?

At this point it looks to me that your game really isn't getting the Book of Silence changes in there, based on the fact that the mod names are greyed out and italicized.

EDIT: also upon quick glance, your mod priorities seem to me to be way off. Again, I'm no expert so if I'm wrong i hope someone corrects me, but there appears to me to be quite a few mods in your mod list that should be loaded much earlier in the list and vice versa. Did you install these in order according to a guide? Keep in mind that in MO the LARGER the Priority number is, the MORE priority it has (i.e. largest numbers have top priority). This means that when the mods are sorted by Priority such that 0 is at the top, all mods as you go down overwrite the ones before them (if they have conflicting files).

EDIT 2: Last one and I'm gone for a bit! A great example of where you're going wrong with the mod list and with your priorities is right at the end of your list. Notice how your "The Beauty of Skyrim - Dungeons 1k" mod has a flag of a white lightning bolt? If you hover your cursor over that lightning bolt you'll get a tooltip telling you that the mod is redundant. Meaning that the ENTIRE MOD is being overwritten by another mod (i.e. the mod may as well not even be installed). In this case, since it's the 2nd to last mod in your list, this tells you that Vivid Landscapes - All In One is completely overwriting The Beauty of Skyrim.

Here's a link showing the filetree of the mod: 11MVh8U.jpg?1, it obviously has the files there and I cannot set each one as an individual mod, so what can I do to fix this?

I never saw an X there and never had to remove anything, it was just like this upon installation as far as I can remember (it's possible it was like this after moving the mod priority around trying to fix the graphics).

Yeah, that's definitely what's happening.

So should I move the 2k mods and all the other graphics mods to the end of all the priorities so they show up for sure?

I definitely see that. So I should delete the Beauty of Skyrim mod right?

I've ran LOOT before my original post and that was the order of plugins that it gave me, however LOOT doesn't move the priority of the mods in the left main screen at all. Would you be able to eyeball a better priority load order for me? If not, I plan on just moving all texture mods to the end of my priority and see how that goes.

You have not installed AMB correctly. You need to use the FOMOD installer. Did you install it manually or something?

That must have been it. I went back and reinstalled them and they come up normal now (not grayed out). Thanks for mentioning that, I probably wouldn't have caught it.

Since you're part of the staff, do you have any suggestions for my texture problem that i'm having?
