Besidilo Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 There's something wrong with my Skyrim installation. 1) When I delete some files in the Skyrim folder and attempt to restore them using the Steam's "Verify Integrity of Game's Cache" function, it simply verifies the files and tells me everything is OK. Even when most of the files are totally gone. 2) The newly created SkyrimPrefs.ini has a different structure, some bits are missing and top info is clearly added from Skyrim.ini. 3) I can't use the Data Files function from Skyrim Launcher. 4) Before restoring the whole thing from a back up (since I couldn't restore using Steam), Skyrim Launcher would reset Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini on EVERY launch, regardless of what I did. The problems started appearing a couple of days ago, no idea what's causing them.
Neovalen Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 If your using skyrim unplugged make sure you have downloads enabled... other than that sounds very wierd. Perhaps try uninstall from steam then re-install if all else fails.
Besidilo Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 I think it was Skyrim Unplugged. For some reason, it was not showing any version or whether it worked or not. It still doesn't, but disabling it allowed me to restore the key files. Thanks!
frihyland Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Yeah, you need to click enable in Skyrim Unplugged if you want to use any downloading features of steam except for the autodownloading from Steam Workshop.

I'm curious if you are using 1.5b due to your comment about it not showing the version, unless you are referring to something else. At the same time, 1.5b shouldn't allow you to delete the files without enabling updates, but you can if using 1.4.

It didn't seem to even detect my Skyrim install, but it worked anyway.
frihyland Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Steam removes skyrim data from the registry arbitrarily. Valve seems to assume that you will be launching skyrim from steam (which will regenerate these keys as necessary) so no worries right? If however, you are launching tesv.exe from somewhere other than the launcher your skyrim registry entries will never be regenerated and are almost certainly gone. This causes problems for any program that needs to know if skyrim is installed, what version, where, etc...

stoppingby4now Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 With version 1.5b I'm determining if a game is installed from the uninstall area of the registry. Just for curiosities sake, you can check the following registry key to see if it exists: x32 - HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Steam App 72850 x64 - HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432NodeMicrosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Steam App 72850 If Skyrim was installed via Steam, that key should exist. It's interesting that it's not showing you the version information or updating the state, especially if it was still doing its job.
Besidilo Posted August 21, 2012 Author Posted August 21, 2012 I don't have those entries. I've probably never even installed Steam on this system, just rebuilt it from the last Windows install.
stoppingby4now Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Do you have a boxed version of the game? That might explain the key not existing, which would mean I need to account for that. More annoyances. :P
