... it's self-inflicted and I don't know what to do about it.

I've rebuilt gaming computer (Windows 8.1) and therefore my Skyrim environment.  The self-inflicted portion is: I started with SR:LE, decided I didn't like it - sorry Neovalen. I took the SR:LE MO profile, copied to a STEP 2.2.9 profile, disabled all mods, re-arranged and added moded so that I had a 2.2.9 extended setup.  Then I added back several of SR:LE mods that I did like.  Then I added several additional mods that I wanted (SkyRe, Frostfall, Ningheim, Live Another Life and texture mods, etc.)  At this point, MO lists 229 plugins in my load order, 378 total mods.

I stopped and fired up Skyrim at every "benchmark" spot on the Wiki page.  (I just wanted to make sure things were loading.)  I never saved.  I only get to the point where I could access the menu and quit.  I finished that late last night.  This morning, I copied that "baseline" profile to a play-through profile and started playing. Let me tell you, I've never had so much trouble.  Extra plugins that I didn't even know about, animations not working like I wanted (Skeleton mis-matches), I even had a CTD and one ILS - something that I've not had since STEP 2.2.6.

I've said all of that to say this: I've worked through all of the problem so far, but I'm stumped and can't get past this lockup.  I say "lock up" because that's actually what happens.  Skyrim will just freeze or stop working once I enter the cell where Riverwood sits. Let me explain.

I've played through to the point Ralof and the PC arrive at Riverwood, we go through the Gerdur dialog.  She calls for Hod; Ralof and Gerdur go to wait by the tree stump.  Gerdur and Hod's kid is supposed to come running across the wooden bridge and ask Ralof a ton of questions.  He never does.  Hod stops at the end of the bridge and never makes it to Gerdur and Ralof.  Their conversation never continues.  The quest line just stops.  I can move and see things, but nothing about that quest progresses.  I can move across the bridge and head toward Whiterun.  Once I approach the bridge out of Riverwood the textures stop loading and only the LOD textures are on surfaces.

If I save, Skyrim hangs.  I need to crash it.  If I fast travel, I get an ILS. I need to crash Skyrim.

I *think* it's related to RS Children.  As the ONE time that the kid came across the bridge he had a "potato head" (missing textures) because I didn't install the non-essential children patch for RS Children.  I closed, fixed that problem and resumed.  No kid.  I started a new play-through , I've even deleted ALL the saves for my play-through profile and started over.  Nothing has worked.

One last bit of info.  SR:LE directs you to not install/delete certain files in certain mods.  As I was "transitioning" from SR:LE to STEP, every time that SR:LE and STEP used the same mod, I re-installed the mod so that it followed STEP guidelines.  I have no doubt that I messed something up along the way - I spent several nights well past my bedtime trying to get this done.  I'm concerned at this point that I may need to start over completely.  I'm hoping to avoid that obviously, but if you folks tell me that's what I need to do, then I will.

IF I need to start over, what's the best way to do that?  Delete the contents of the MO/Profiles, MO/Overwrite and MO/Mods directories and start loading mods?

Guys, never mind.  I've basically given up on my current installation.  I'm going to start fresh.

What convinced me?  When I went to the "Vanilla Skyrim" profile and started it, the trip in wagon was a physics nightmare.  Cart sideways, Gen Tullis ran over by a cart, half of the scenery missing.  It's not worth trying to salvage this.  I've got Steam verifing local files now and will start over tomorrow.

I couldn't find a way to delete my post or I would have.  Sorry to waste everyone's time.
