CTD after Bethesda logo

So after a day or so of not playing Skyrim I tried to play today only for the game to crash after the Bethesda logo comes up.

 

The game played fine before, no real issues even after a few hours. No real problems showed up and I haven't changed the load order since the start of my new game. The only thing that I changed between the day or so that I played and now is that I upgraded Immersive Patrols to it's new merged .esp update. I ran FNIS, SUM, and Wyre Bash after it just to make sure everything transferred correctly.

 

Would anyone have an idea on why Skyrim would choose to act uppity now?

Open up TESVEdit. It will tell you, which esp file cannot be loaded, because it's master(s) are missing.

Alternatively run Wrye Bash and check which of the ESPs has dark red coloured tickbox - select it and in the right hand pane there will show which master files are missing for this plugin.

It seems like everything loaded fine. "Seems" because I'm not a pro at using TESVEdit so imagine I'll say something obvious that makes me sound like an idiot.

 

The one thing that did stand out however was at the bottom of the Messages page at the start, there were a bunch of

 

"Background Loader: Error: record NPC_ contains unexpected (or out of order) subrecord"

 

with differing numbers and letters after subrecord along with

 

"Background Loader: Errors were found in: Darksteel1_3DNPC [NPC_:9B1D7A94]

The 3DNPC I'm pretty damn sure is from Interesting NPC's. I remember finishing a quest involving one the NPC's from that before I saved the game. But I have no idea why that would cause a CTD before I could even load the save from that.

I've had a look at the load order you posted. Quite a modlist you have there... But anyway. The CTD on a main menu screen (before the menu loads) is 99% of times an indication that one of the ESP plugins in your load order is missing a master file. It could be that you have updated a mod that provided that masterfile and the filename was changed. It could be that you have updated a mod and forgot to run BOSS and that master file was placed at the bottom of your load order (master files have to be placed above the dependant files, at all times). It could be that you have removed a mod...

 

If you however loaded up TES5EDIT and it loaded everything, that means all the master files are in place.

 

As you use so many non-STEP mods it will be hard to figure out what happened. Did you try Wrye Bash as I suggested?

Sorry, I forgot to look up after I posted and didn't see your post rootsrat.

 

I was wrong before, I did also update Book Covers before Immersive Patrols...sucks having a crap memory. Anyway, no red tick in the box but the Book Covers + DLC's .esp's are all highlighted in red.

 

I did run BOSS as well afterword, well SUM did but then I ran BOSS itself just to make sure earlier.

Do not use the 3DNPCEFF.esp patch unless you actually encounter problems with Extensible Follower Framework (EFF). It is old and the 3DNPC page tells you not to use unless problems are encountered.

Hrmm, it seems like Book Covers is the problem for some reason. If I disable it Skyrim runs fine.

 

Along with the red background there's text at the bottom on Wrye Bash:

 

"Plugin is missing String Localization files. Active in load list."

 

Anyone know what that means?

What language version of Skyrim do you use?

You shouldn't have any problems with the string files... I would suggest re download the mod and re install

I'm going to copy this from the Book Covers comments, I'm trying to see if anyone knows what up there as well.

 

So here's where it's getting weird. Using Mod Manager I right clicked on it and selected to reinstall this, it came up with an error saying the Installation file no longer exists. Do I downloaded a "fresh" install of the same one I was using and after trying to install that came up with an error saying:

 

"None of the available installer plugins were able to handle that archive"

 

It seems like it's solely Book Covers that having a problem, all the other mods I use work and re/install fine. Also for the first problem "Installation file no longer exists" ain't true, I can open it up and the files and folder is there.

"Installation file no longer exists" means that there wasn't the downloaded archive available.

 

As you have re-downloaded the mod, the archive was there again.

 

As for the other message, maybe the file from that particular server on Nexus was corrupted? Try downloading the mod manually (don't forget to Query Info when it's downloaded).

Got rid of everything in the downloads section that involved Book Covers and manually deleted the Book Covers folder in the mods folder in Mod Organizer, along with Overwrite just in case. Downloaded Book Covers manually and still the same problem. Got rid of it and downloaded via Nexus and still brought up the error that it can't do that.

 

Seriously, it's just Book Covers, everything else works fine and doesn't give me any problems. What the Hell is going on that Skyrim and the Mod Manager are pissed about books?

Are you using the internal or external fomod installer with MO?

I got asked that on Book Covers Nexus page. I don't know specifically, all I know that in the Setting and Plugins tab there is no box to check for preferring external for me, all I can choose is for Fomod Installer with Prefer and Enabled with True or False as options. Fomod Installer (external) is simply a grey box.

 

Edit: Hrmm, it looks like Update.esm is also highlighted in red. I never went all the way up in Wyre Bash so I didn't see it. Don't know why. Again really weird, I don't play the game for a day or so and it get's pissy with me.

 

...Maybe jealous that I spent that time playing Assassin's Creed: Black Flag?
