CTDs, Freezing, randomly, and anywhere.

Question

Posted

So, a little bit of background.

My Stats. (This is not overclocked, I'm usually running the CPU at 4.5gbs and ram at 2100 (which is normal stats for the RAM) but due to the CTDs I wanted to make sure it wasn't a factor)

My Install:

I've went with Skyrim Revisited by Neovalen... I've followed it (as best as I could) to the letter, unfortunately it is out of date, by about 6 months, so not everything applied, and not everything fit perfectly, but I did my best.

My Mod List

I've done the proper Bash, SUM, FNIS, and Boss steps... Here's my plugin list.

I've used Skyrim Monitor and see that on average it hovers around 2.2gbs of VRAM, I'm noticing a correlation to passing over 3gbs of VRAM (my VRAM limit) and freezing.

But the CTDs are pretty much random, and if I've saved just before it happened, it won't happen twice in the same place. It happens inside caves, outside in the wilderness, inside shops, inside cities. It's just anywhere... Most times I've seen is when I see someone down the road, an NPC waiting... but they are usually far away.

I've had many problems with freezing, but I (this is weird) uninstalled my ATI drivers and used whatever Windows has prepackaged, and surprisingly enough, it dropped my VRAM to 2.2gbs average from 3gbs always, and the FPS increased from about 20 to a perfect 45 - 60. To be honest, this alone has made me lose faith in ATI cards in general. But that's besides the point. I'm running on stock drivers, and it's working so much better and freezes MUCH less. (since doing this I've only ran into 1 freeze)

But the CTDs are still constant, and it's happening all the time.

If you followed SR and use MO, then you have the ability to quickly move the optimized vanilla textures to the bottom of your priority order, so they overwrite everything.

Test your game with just these, and then see if it improves drastically. If it does then you still have memory issues, if it does not then you have load order issues, most likely related to having too much stuff on your mod list.

I've tried similar, I've disabled all the big HD texture packages, SRO, HD2k, etc. etc.

It /is/ more stable in the fact that it doesn't freeze as often (I should have probably gone with the 'lite' version of some of that stuff rather than the 4k but whatever, can always fix that)

But CTDs are still very common. Also, SR has you disable all auto saving, but doesn't offer a mod to replace it... is there something that you guys use that is compatible with SR? I once used this auto saver, it was really great (used MCM)... But it too would CTD on saves at times... really weird ;x

I only manually save... auto save is not reliable when using a modded skyrim. Yes it might be annoying etc. but there you have it. After a while it is just second nature to save before going into a cave, or leaving town.

I don't think your videocard is the villain, 4k textures is too much for any graphic card if it isn't a top high end videocard (Those ones with 4 to 6 GB VRam), mainly if you are running in 1920x1080 resolution.

I use HD 2K textures + Project Parallax + aMidianBorn Landscapes + RealVision ENB + Enhanced Lights and FX and etc. It is a total of 60 2K textures and visual mods. I also use max view distance with uGrids 7. My video card which it is an ATI 7950 3GB, runs it smoothly around 40-50 FPS, 30-40 FPS in big wars in 1920x1080 ultra settings, the VRam usage never passes the 2.6GB.

I think 2K textures it is already beautiful enough for me. If you want to use 4k textures, I suggest buying a stronger videocard with more memory.

My brother notebook has a NVidia GTX 770m 3GB DDR5, his notebook can't handle 4k textures either, it gets CTDs.

If you reduced the textures and the problem persists, for sure it is another mod.

1- Wet and Cold - I used in the past

2- Player Headtracking - I used in the past

These above are know for stressing SKSE Papyrus scripts. The second on cannot be taken from a savegame once it is there, a new game must to be started.

Enhanced Blood Textures - I used in the past

This mod is know for causing some problems too. It runs some scripts...

Automatic Variants - Never used, but people say it has some conflicts

It may eventually conflict with a long mod list as yours.

What I can say is, your mod list is big, but I'm not so far as well.

I'm almost sure it is a mod conflict, if it isn't, Skyrim is asking for mercy, it is not very well-known by working with a long mod list which has dozens of heavy scripted mods.

What you are running into when using many 4k textures is a mix of hardware and software limit on how much data you can effectively move about and still have a working program. DirectX 9 was never made with the goal of doing stuff like that, hence nothing short of a new dx11 rendering engine is going to help out.

In general this is the main issue for skyrim at this stage. People put too much stuff in and expect wonders from code that does what it was never designed to do in the first place.

I wouldn't touch Skyrim Revisited non-Legendary Edition with a 10 feet pole. There is just too much bells and whistle to expect something stable out of it. You can't simply use ton of high resolution texture in combination of several script-based mods and expect a CTD free experience.

If you want something that look stable on paper take a look at the Legendary Edition.

Opt out: Frostfall, Wet and Cold and Skyrim Immersive Creatures. And I can guarantee that you'll get a CTD free experience. It might sound like a boring mod list gameplay wise but in my opinion the only must have mod that improve gameplay is OBIS & Deadly Dragons. To replace Automatic Variant, I simply use Bellyaches Animal and Creature in combination with StarX Detailed Monster. An alternative that is at first look a bit "meh", yes, but it's also a solution that is much lighter and doesn't require SkyProc.

By the way, I have an HD7950 3gb with latest driver and I have no FPS or freeze issue. Unless you have a defect video card or corrupt driver installation, your video card should run #1 with latest driver.

Lawl, it just sucks because I was told to do SR, because I was having trouble with the core & extended guide. I did find SRLE, but it's being updated and changed almost every day, and there's no changelog to follow, so I don't want to really touch it right now...

Instead I finally understood and got the extended guide working, and I went with the baseline settings.. I don't really need 4k textures anyway :P

Understood the DDopting of vanilla textures and etc, it was pretty easy now and it worked flawless as opposed to my last attempt.

I'm trying to work on DDsopting my Mod textures now... And that guide is extremely confusing, I'm trying to read it from top to bottom, I think it might be the way it's written :x

Anyway, I'm running STEP extended now, and it's pretty chill... I'm a little disappointed they don't have the final steps finished though :(

Like, it's missing the in-game setup and activation of mods, and settings to change on them... kinda like SR had...

Anything I could do to help that?

And maybe someone could explain a little of the DDsopt of mods a bit more to me...
