Issues with NMM download links in Google Chrome after uninstalling MO

Question

Posted

So I'm still having a problem with resetting my file associations after uninstalling Mod Organizer. Thing is my problem seems to be browser based and I'm not sure how to fix it. I completely understand that a web browser is separate from a modding tool for Skyrim, but I don't know where a better place to start looking for a fix would be.

The problem is that the Nexus' "Download with NMM" button is still trying to download using Mod Organizer despite my file associations all being set to NMM instead. I'm using Google Chrome and when I tried using Internet Explorer instead, the button properly referenced NMM. Does anybody here have any idea what I might be able to do to fix this, or at least where I might be able to go to find help instead?

Could you do this for me?

1. Press Winkey+R to open the Run dialog

2. Type regedit and enter

3. Find this key for me and tell me what you got in there (or take a screenshot):

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\nxm\shell\open\command

Thank you very much! That's exactly what I needed. After you pointed me there I found that was still referencing the Mod Organizer. After changing it's target path to NexusClient.exe it now successfully launches and downloads using the NXM like before. You have very much gratitude from me, especially as you're helping me to stop using something and not trying to encourage me to continue using it. So!

Thank you for your help, thank you for the solution, and thank you for actually offering support to someone in my situation.

Have a great day!

This may not be the best approach actually.

In newer versions of Windows (I believe since vista) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT is a virtual registry path that is a mix of "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes" and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes" (the former "overwriting" the latter)

To my knowledge NMM installs itself to HKLM, so it applies the nxm connection to all users. MO installs itself to HKCU, so it applies only to the current user, thus doesn't replace NMM in HKLM.

Now if my information about NMM is correct, it would be best to uninstall MO as a nxm handler by removing "HKCU\Software\Classes\nxm\shell\open\command" because then the setting for all users takes over again.

If you modify HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT to use NMM that change goes to HKCU so you have actually set up NMM as the nxm handler twice (in HKCU AND HKLM). I'm not yet sure how but sooner or later this will probably bite someone in the a**.

Actually the file you directed me to Tannin is already referencing NexusClient.exe. Only the file DoubleYou specified was still pointing to MO. If that information helps you for future reference.
