CTD - Compatibility issues?

Hey, I'm totally new here and tbh I think this is the first time I've ever asked advice on a forum at all, so hopefully I'm not breaking any rules XD.

Basically I'm having issues with random CTDs, I scoured the forum and couldn't seem to find a fix that works for me.

I've read a few things, such as 3.1 GB ram issue, mod loading orders etc, but the fact is I'm really awful at this whole troubleshooting thing.

Below is my mod list, I was hoping someone might recognize a likely issue with compatibility or perhaps something I probably did wrong.

I should warn you, I (somewhat foolishly I suppose) installed everything without testing as I went, I did use the STEPS guide to begin with then added a few things I have either used before or wanted to try.

I really don't have the time to individually deactivate mods and wander around seeing if I CDT as I can walk around the wilderness for up to 20 minutes without having one, and I spent more time than I really should've installing the mods in the first place.

I've used BOSS to organize everything, and everything that needed cleaning has been (exuding mods that require dirty edits), but as for bash tags and things like that, way over my head (even when I tried to find instructions).

Oh one more thing, this is from a clean installation and a new game, only thing I did in game was configure the mods via MCM and activated Trade & Barter (I read somewhere thats buggy, or something?)

P.P.S Forgot to mention, I created a character and DYNAVISION Dynamic Depth of Field was working, didn't like the character after about 5 mins, deleted the save and called it a night. Next day, made a new character but DYNAVISION (though viewable in MCM) doesn't seem to be having any effect. Not sure if info is helpful, but I haven't noticed any other issues with bugs though admittedly, I haven't really ventured far away from Helgen yet.

I'd be surprised if anyone would NOT have CTDs with that kind of modlist. You really need to reduce the amount of gameplay/scripted mods, starting first of all with warzones.

 

Why don't you first do a STEP core install, follow it to the letter, and see if that works? Then add a non-STEP or STEP-extended mod one at a time. You didn't follow the STEP instructions properly, seeing as you have more than 20 secunda/masser esps whereas it should be one of each. You also didn't run BOSS or didn't run it properly. No offense but I doubt anyone can help you with a modlist like that, especially since you don't even have the basics setup in a proper manner. Start with STEP Core only, you won't regret it.

I'll be honest, the only thing I understood about that is "remove Warzones".

STEP core install? I assumed thats what I did?

I made the changes to the ini files as listed in the guide and then installed each of the mods to the specifications given (HQ, LQ, 1024 etc)

non-STEP/STEP-extended... no idea.

How does one properly run BOSS? I used BOSS gui and then followed by running BOSS through NMM.

Sorry to seem ignorant, but this is really the only game I've ever modded since Morrowind, and that was a lot simpler.

You should only install the mods on the STEP guide at your first go.

Anything outside of that then you need to put more time into learning how modding works, since most of the time it will require more work to be compatible with everything else.

For example you have getsnowy, and wet and cold. Wet and cold already contain what getsnowy does so there is no need to install it.

 

Also you seem to have just manually installed EVERYTHING in alot of mods, and activated all of its .esp´s. Most of those mods come with different choices. Here the moons are a good example... you have installed all its .esp´s which makes no sense when you think about it. You can only resize the moons to one size not 20 at the same time, so again you just have a lot of wasted .esp´s which make your game more unstable.

 

Also you have installed so many scripted mods and mods that add new stuff to the game world, that it would be impossible to ever get it all working stable for even 1 hour.

 

In general there is just so many things wrong with that list that it would be easier to just say "start over" and only install the mods in the guide. When you have learned more about how modding works, then you can start to add in those more complicated mods.

Sorry if I didn't explain it better, but modding is hard in the beginning and you'll need to learn what a lot of things mean - most of us had to go through that some point in time.You can identify STEP:Core mods by the green colored bar to the left of the mod name. Everything else can be considered extended.

 

Also I would advise you to use Mod Organizer instead of NMM. For setting up Mod Organizer, you can follow the Skyrim Revisited guide parts "script extenders" as well as 3.1, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 and 3.6. https://wiki.step-project.com/User:Neovalen/Skyrim_Revisited

 

I agree with Aiyen. It's best you remove all mods and also reinstall skyrim so you can ensure it is clean. If you use MO and follow the SR guide directions as I mentioned then this will be the only time you'll have to do this as you will have a permanently clean Skyrim profile in MO to which you can always go back.

Thanks for your replies guys, I really wanted to avoid reinstalling for time reasons so I got rid of a couple of mods that have a lot of scripts such as warzone, had a go with Wrye Bash, tried fixing everything up and my only stability problem seemed to be once using the forge, but this was after around 2 hours of play time and hasnt happened since. Thanks for your posts they were actually really helpful in directing me where I was going wrong, I think I've just been very lucky that I've managed to salvage this game without having to reinstall (though I fully expect future issues), so anyone reading this later on, do your homework and don't rush it like I did!
