Hearthfire house in the Pale not visible when built

Question

Posted

I've used the STEP guide to mod my Skyrim setup (I even created a guide, mainly for myself, to document what I did.) and I've enjoyed it very much.  But I have one or two nagging problems.  The one I'm trying to solve at the moment is:

I've just recently gotten into house building.  My first house was Lakeview Manor and it's better than 95% complete (I'm missing a few trophies.).  As I wanted to build another, I decided to build my second house in the Pale, Heljarchen Hall - the one you get from Dawnstar's Jarl. So off I go, perform the quests and buy the plot of land.  I travel to the plot, find the materials, drafting table, workbench and anvil and commence to build the "basic house".

When I turn around to see the house, I see....nothing.

The drafting table seems to think I've built something, the workbench seems to think I've built something, as they both offer me their respective options for the next steps.  But I see nothing, nor can I find anything.

So my question is two-fold:  Has anyone else using the STEP guide run into this?  If so, can you point me toward the solution?

If you're curious about which mods I used or how I used them, you can refer to my guide here- it's a pretty detailed account of the last two or three days of modding efforts.  I'm actually hoping that the guide will help us figure out what the problem is.

FYI: I have saves from before I purchased the land, so if I need to fall back to one of those, I can.

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

I don't have this problem and noone else on these forums has reported it. I tried a google search and found that a number of people have this problem; try a search and then see if you can find someone with a similar problem. Most people seem to report not be able to see any of the houses vs. not being able to see only one, although some seem to have problems that might be similar to yours.

The guide you followed set uGrids to 7 - believe me, you don't want to have it at that value unless you want to get hit by reduced stability. Anyway, I've seen reports that Unique Region Names v5 can cause Hearthfire homes to not work properly, because Hearthfire's needed changes to the worldspace records are overwritten with URN's. It needs patching for sure.

I did several Google searches and found a lot of people reporting interference with one mod or another with one house or another.  Nothing that I found solved the problem, which is why I ended up here.  My modded configuration is 90% STEP, with only a few mods added for weathers, lighting and bodies at the end.

It is obvious to me that the STEP guide has had a lot of time and effort put into it.  This forum has people with much more modding experience than me and a lot more game time (Skyrim anyway) than me.  Combine those facts together and you can see why I've used STEP as the basis for my modding configuration an why I came here looking for answers.  It just surprises me that, with other people using the same guide as a basis for their modded configuration, that I was the only one having this problem.

Hopefully, the solution to my issue will help others how who might struggle with the very same issue in the future.

EDIT: Typos.  WOW, my dyslexia is in high gear tonight!

When I looked at the forum posts elsewhere reporting this problem, they said the problem is that the quest isn't being properly updated and that once this happens the only way to fix it is to go back to a previous save and to find some way to eliminate/fix whatever mods are causing it before proceeding with building a house. They mention some mods that affect the region name of the area with the house (e.g., Birds and Flocks, Unique region names), but they are not sure this is the problem. You can certainly look with TES5Edit and find the mods that affect this; you could even create a small patch with the correct region name and have it load last. The posts that said they fixed it didn't describe exactly how they fixed it; many tried a lot of things and repeated them several times before it was fixed.

The guide that I linked to is my own - I wrote it last weekend.  It's a reminder to me how I did what I did.  But you are indeed right about the uGridsToLoad setting.  As you can read on my blog, here, I was having a great deal of stability issues and discovered several threads on this very forum, thanks to GophersVids, that made me think of the 3.1GB barrier.  Couple that with the what I now know that uGrids actually does and I saw that I was knocking on that 3.1GB barrier every time I loaded Skyrim.  So since Monday evening, I've been running with uGrids set back to 5 and stability has returned and frustration has settled.

But, back to the subject of the thread:

You're right again.  Having Unique Region Names loaded is preventing me from build the house in the pale. I disabled it in ModOrganizer and now I can build the house with no issues.  URN is such a small thing in the grand scheme of things.  I'll live without it to get my second house.

Thank you for you reply and the cure for my only real outstanding issue with running Skyrim with my modded configuration.  I hope that this help someone else in the future.

Now to blog about it.  :)

Birds and Flocks came up a lot - and I think it now even has a Hearthfire version because of it.  When I tried to find the culprit mod before (about two weeks ago), I broke my mod configuration so badly that Skyrim wouldn't start (I was using NMM then, I've switched to MO now and I'm loving it.)

As it turns out, it was Unique Region Names - but I never came across that in my research and I didn't get that far in my search a few weeks back.  Now, thanks to this forum (and WilliamImm), and MO, I know and I've disabled URN in favor of building the house.  :)

Thanks for responding and helping!
