Issue

Recently gone through the lists and removed a few random mods, and some that are too buggy to fix (3dNPC etc)

Removed Automatic Variants to help with RAM, and hopefully fix my issue.

The problem is outdoor CTD`s and freezing...it doesn`t happen at any specific point it seems to be totally random, but once i hit a point it can be reproduced (if that makes sense?) Randomly occurs but i can load a previous save and it will happen again.

From what i can tell it happens when NPCs/Creatures pop in at the edge of the loading area. (hence why i removed AV) Taking AV off seemed to help for a few hours but now its still happening. I`ve read a few posts with people saying that running around too fast can cause it, but that's stupid. Im not gonna start playing the game slowly so i dont crash.

The best example was the giant camp outside whiterun....i was doing the companion missions. I left whiterun, got on my horse, and went towards the camp to get to Dustmans Cairn. I spotted the fire pop in and as soon as the mamoths pop in to view....CTD. I get this at random points around skyrim, but this is the only time i`ve managed to nail down the reason.

What im wanting, is to find out what mods can be causing this glitch. I thought AV coz of the mamoths...took it off and it seemed to fix it. (From what i can tell AV is safe to remove) But what else can be causing this? It deffinately seems to be caused by new NPC`s/creatures poping in, as it only happens when im moving. If im just waddling around gathering, or fighting, nothing....only when running/riding around.

EDIT:

Sorted ini file, so you can read it now.

Yes i have some extra lines in papyrus, but these have helped my stability ALOT. Esspecially with random combat freezing etc.

Shadows? Is that the reason...shadows? Stupid shadows cut my fps in half and ruin everything when u start modding?? I have half a mind to just turn them off, run outside and have a super ultimate hardcore smooth dragon boot %*#@ing party.

That should do the trick yes. It only takes adding one new mod etc. to mess up AV. This is mainly because the FormID´s that gets generated stops working when the game assigns and alters other formID´s depending on your list. At least that is what I have nailed it down to after Oh so many reinstalls!

Even DDSopting mods to the size they already are can help. The amount of textures that arn`t optimized fully is amazing. Try doing all of your mods at 2048x2048 first. (it wont upscale anything just sets the MAX size to 2048x2048)

Do "The big 3" at 1024x1024 - SRO, Skyrim HD, Serious HD, Failing that, do your mods with half sized normals. Honestly. you wont notice any difference in quality, but you will notice a dramatic drop in RAM usage

Can you suggest a good tutorial or walkthrough on doing this for anyone using Mod Organizer? I've read a few, but i'm still unclear on the best way to optimize my textures, and what the best dimensions are.

No one has made an appropriate video yet from what I know of. I'm making one but right now it's in the rough draft stage and not fit for public consumption. It probably would have been done already if the past few weeks hadn't been so busy. No timeline for when it might be ready it depends on when I have the time to devote another six-ten hours to sit down record, cut out all my vocal flub ups and then upload yet another version to be nitpicked through by the staff here on the forums. One of the main problems with it at the current time is it has a fair bit of "fat" on it as, if I recall correctly it's currently ~43 minutes long.

As for text walkthrough the DDSOpt guide is your best bet, you'll just have to make your own .7z archives for any non-vanilla textures.

To get to the DDSOpt guide click the globe button in the top left corner of the bar at the top that says "WIKI" that will take you to the wiki's cover page. There you will see the DDSOpt Guide.

Happy modding and welcome to the forums IG!

The Quickstart tab in the DDSopt guide gives a brief overview of the process, but it doesn't include steps that are specific to a particular mod manager like Mod Organizer. It does have a table with recommendations on which mods to optimize.

If you're having problems with DDSopt. Give Optimizer Textures a try.

I've found that it works rather well personally.

Also, halving your normal maps can be rather beneficial as well. I've made most of my textures 1024 diffuse with 512 normals with some of them 2048/1024. Most of the time you won't notice a normal map that's half the size of the color map.

A better option entirely is to switch texture artists to people who correctly compress their texture and offer performance option. EG. Cabal, Brumbek, Sparrowprince or frozunswaiden to name a few.

I don't want to start whole new topic so I figured I'd ask here. Hope I don't ruffle any feathers doing so.

On a 'off the top of your head', what would cause a CTD when you got near an area? For me it's North Skybound Watch, which sucks because I can't complete the Master Destruction spell quest. It's an area a bit outside Riverwood, a bit outside Orphan Rock, and North Skybound Watch after a bit of testing; once I get near those areas I CTD. The only thing I can think of that stands out is an NPC added at North Skybound Watch from Interesting NPC's. And I've been able to go there before, I only noticed when I had the Master Destruction quest and couldn't get there.

I do use Safety Load, I put the EnableOnlyLoading = true just in case that had something to do with it. I'll disable it next time and see if that might be it.
