Upgrading PC

Asimov

Question

Hi guys, not sure if you remember me. I disappeared due to work and real life, but here I am again and I have a question for you.

I had been running STEP on my computer with these current parts:

[CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W Power Supply]

[GIGABYTE Super Overclock Series GeForce GTX 470 1280MB x 2 in SLI]

[intel Core i7-930 2.8GHz]

[Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case with Upgraded USB 3.0]

[Western Digital WD Black 1TB 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive]

[G.SKILL 6GB 3 x 2GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 PC3 12800]

[ASUS P6T LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard]

[ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro Rev. 2, CPU Cooler 92mm PWM Fan]

120G Intel SSD Hard Drive

And I wanted to upgrade a bit to try to run extreme STEP. My question is this, can I just buy the new GTX 770 or do I need to replace the processor, board, and ram. My budget isn't unlimited so I'd rather just spend it all on the graphics card, but I was hoping for some input. I have built my pc before, but I am not great at figuring out what I really should go with. Any help is appreciated.

PS. Looks like you guys have put together a terrific set up here!

It is most properly a great thing, however my tests show that it is not strictly required. However for your silly resolution Neovalen then it most properly is! :P

With lower resolutions then it should not matter. I only run at 1650x1080 and I have verified that I could run the game just as stable as Neovalen could, but I would get lower performance in terms of stuttering, and loading in new cells. I only have the 2Gb model of the 660. However as I think I stated in some other thread, then VRAM does matter, but the exact amount is really fuzzy. The only thing I know is that if you go to 1Gb or below your game will stutter so much that the game engine just crashes eventually due to a massive bottleneck.

Also windhelm is a fine place to test, but as we found out in some other threads then falkreath and riverwood are still also prime candidates since they contain cells with varying terrain types, hence far bigger texture loads.

I won't bother arguing (much ;) ) about this, but things like this have always made me curious.. Is that really an issue in the US? I know that in general we are more "liberal" when it comes to swearing in Europe, esp on tv and so on, but I can't imagine why that post would be considered nsfw

I'm in the US. What word did he use? I only care about NSFW pictures on my PC screen like nudity or weird stuff while I'm at work. My manager isn't going to read what I'm typing or reading on a forum. Also I just switched bosses and unlike my micromanaging previous manager who yelled at me for sending a text message, this new boss doesn't seem to ever check up on me nor care what I'm doing :P as long as I complete my work.

Because I replaced the 'F' swearword with the stars ;)

Yeah I figured that bit, which is what made me curious why using the word would be considered nsfw. I completely understand pornographic content, but apart from that there's nothing really considered nsfw here atleast :)

Well, maybe you read posts from this forum with your children nearby?

Anyway, as for me, I've got the graphics card that I wanted (660), and I'll be installing it this weekend, along with a operating system reinstallation (because it's getting quite cluttered over on my computer). Gonna also try out Windows 8 as well.

Windows 8 is really not as bad as people make it out to be especially if your hardware supports it. I have yet to try it on my Desktop (Windows 8 Ready Motherboard) but even with fast boot disabled on the 5400 RPM HDD of my laptop (I use my SSD now) it only took maybe 30 seconds to boot. Which for those that don't know is comparable to the slowest Linux. Plus once you have a start menu replacer life's smooth. I do need to install the SSD in my Desktop though I just keep going back and forth on buying the Student Edition of Windows 8 Pro ($59.99) since I do still need to replace my GFX card since my desktop's GFX card is puny.

Is there any reason to upgrade from windows 7 to windows 8? I mean I don't really want to do it if there's no point. I was also under the impression that windows 8 was more geared towards tablet pcs and touch screens.

Well if you have Windows 7 licenses then not really but eventually you will need to switch. I'm mainly switching because I'm running out of Windows 7 licenses with all the computers around here, that and my laptop has it so I'd rather just use one Windows OS and be done with it. It just helps if there are any problems. Windows 8 is more geared towards tablets (start screen interface at least) but once you get a start menu replacer it's a normal pc again and by it being made mainly for tablets it's much faster and lighter on resources.

Sorry for the off topic I was replying to WilliamImm
