Starac Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 https://aws.amazon.com/lumberyard/ Amazon Lumberyard is a free, cross-platform, 3D game engine for you to create the highest-quality games. Lumberyard has CryEngine DNA. Amazon licensed the software from Crytek and went to town on it, stitching in new networking code and assets pipelines.Make no mistake, this is the free sort of free: no download fee, no royalties liable. Depending on how developers take to it, Lumberyard could cause huge upset in the engine business, topping the deals offered by both Unity and Unreal Engine. Even its source code is free to tinker with. Lumberyard is in beta and free to download now if you have the skills and want to tinker.
Aiyen Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Interesting. But one has to wonder if it will manage to get the community required to actually rival the other engines in the areas they reign in... documentation, tutorials, assets etc.
TechAngel85 Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 That's pretty darn impressive for free software! Maybe someone should nudge Bethesda on the shoulder and tell them to take a look at that for their own custom engine and finally put the Creation Kit to rest. Could you imagine if Skyrim looked like that and was still completely moddable!

TechAngel85 Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 Yep. It's called Witcher 3.Which just goes to prove that it can be done.
Starac Posted February 25, 2016 Author Posted February 25, 2016 (edited) There are already tutorials on the net. I have downloaded it, but didn't try yet. Guest Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Why everyone here on this forum and beyond this community, hasn't thought to make a game with this, is beyond me. I'd be game, even if it's a really small project. You all could do better than that vomit on Greenlight, that's for sure.
Aiyen Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Every time I try to get started on a game project.... I am all fire and fury in the planing and concept phase.... but once I get down into the nitty gritty programming details, I kinda get stuck. Guess I just do not want it badly enough. Also I guess that is why I tend to focus more on the creative aspects. As long as I can see my changes and feel that I progress with something I can motivate myself... with game logic I do not really get that. And the sad fact is that a good game will require some good coding and not just fancy models and textures.
TechAngel85 Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 The thought of making a game with this software is, admittingly, captivating; however, having the skills to do so is another story.
MonoAccipiter Posted March 2, 2016 Posted March 2, 2016 Sign me up as a writer. I'm allowed to dream, right? @GrantSP: Love the Witcher, but is it really as moddable? I'm asking as I haven't checked up the toolkit myself. It also doesn't simulate physics for many objects at all, being more of a static world with (sometimes) animated containers. That's if I recall correctly though, haven't played it for a while. One thing I never really like with the Witcher was how everything "felt" when moving, though that might have to do with the forced third-person perspective.
