Validating cache files

Question

Posted

I just got done downloading Skyrim from Steam. I rebooted and ran the validate cache files option on Steam, and it says "1 file failed to validate and will be required" It doesn't say which file so how can we know if this missing file will cause a problem or not. I realize this is a Steam problem, just thought you guys should be aware of it. Steam is ruining Skyrim.

It's usually installscript.vdf that it redownloads, nothing crucial. Many files will be recreated ones you launch it for the first time.

No reason to hate Steam, it makes it mighty easy to redownload or clean corrupted installs. Same goes for patching. If only it didn't force Steam updates whenever it feels like...

Installscript .vdf is there already. I can't tell whats missing. But I'll tell you this, I've had it. Re-downloaded the game from scratch (about 20hrs wasted). The same problem! Two different graphics cards and no change. I think I need to play another game for a while. I'll still be tracking the progress Skyrim and STEP though. But it's time for a change. Thanks for the input.

I've been experiencing the same thing while doing testing. It always re-downloads installscript.vdf for some oddball reason now. You can easily tell what file(s) were downloaded by going into your Skyrim directory and sorting on Date modified.
