Random CTD's, usually at loadscreens.

I've been troubleshooting this for several days and I feel like I've tried everything at this point so now I'm asking for help. Basically what's going on is I get completely unpredictable non-reproducable CTD, generally on loadscreens, and sometimes while just walking around. I'm running 99% of STEP Extended alongside Skyrim Gameplay Rebalance and Dovahkiin Reborn, with a few very small mods that I consider essential. I had been fighting random CTDs for almost two months before deciding to scrap my modlist and load up STEP for the battle-tested stability.

 

Basically I've monitored and checked everything, my CPU only needs to run at about 25% efficiency, my RAM 50%, and my VRAM 50%. My SKSE memory patch is active and even under heavy stress I don't get anywhere near my first chunk of memory allocation. I've tried every optimization/stability guide out there, the only thing I haven't tried is one of those texture/mesh optimizers because of warnings on STEP about them. At any rate, I'm hoping somebody else will be able to see what I clearly don't.

As I also got rare but annoying CTDs, but NEVER during loading screens, I can at least try to exclude some of your mods that shouldn't cause your loading screen CTDs.

Looking at your Memory Blocks Log, why have you set the first block to 768 MB when you never even reach 512 MB? I don't know if there's a downside of increasing the value, just asking.

I used to have it set to 512, but if I manage to play for an hour or so without crashing it hits 400+ so I wanted to be safe; As far as I know increasing it only adds a little time to the initial load screen. Apart from CoT and Vividian, which enough people use with no problems, my other additional mods are extremely lightweight containing little to no scripts. I'm fairly certain they wouldn't be the cause either.

 

Just to further prove the unpredictable and non-reproducible nature of these CTD, I did the stability test again and flew around for 10 minutes (twice the test's time) with no problem. It's driving me crazy, how do you troubleshoot something you can't reproduce? It happens anytime from the very first loadscreen to after an hour or two of playing.

Hmm, I noticed your iMaxAnisotropy setting in SkyrimPrefs (= 1) conflicts with the setting in enblocal (= 8). From DoubleYou's SkyrimPrefs ini guide, the "i" prefix indicates it accepts an integer value, not a boolean (true / false) value. See this for more information.

 

If setting it to 8 in the enblocal.ini, I would also set it to 8 in the SkyrimPrefs.ini. That way, what is not filtered through the game will be filtered by the ENB. Either that, or set it to 0 in SkyrimPrefs.

 

I'm not sure if this would cause CTDs, but I don't think 1 is a valid value for that in SkyrimPrefs. See this post for Boris' related comments on anisotropy.

 

Also, this doesn't apply for your specific situation, but this entry in the enblocal.ini guide is fairly interesting concerning Sheson's Memory patch.

Hah, yeah I doubt that would affect anything outside of graphic quality. It's a typo, I had meant to set it to 0 to have ENB handle all of the Anisotropy, nice catch.

I've read over that guide numerous times and understand the interaction, which is why I have the expandsystemmemoryx64 set to false in favor of a larger initial memory chunk.

Update on this issue: I installed Cleanmem as recommended by this page: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/32363/?

I've been playing on and off all day and only had a crash once that was probably caused by consecutive use of quickload in a short time, so I'm not counting it.

I'd like to believe the problem is gone but it was so random that I can't say for sure.
