Inexplicable Exterior CTD's Troubleshooting Help Needed

After weeks of research, learning and careful setup I am at the end of creating my modded Skyrim with only about 10 more mods I need to add, and find I am getting random CTDs in exterior areas. I've been adding mods in slowly in groups of 5 or so and stress testing each batch using the fly around method, as well as dragging followers around getting in fights, spawning in tons of NPCs and starting massive brawls in Windhelm. I have never crashed or froze in any of these situations, but now when I'm just cruising around outside doing nothing stressful at all, I am occasionally experiencing CTD in random places all over the map for no reason I can pinpoint. I've been toting around Inigo, Vilja, and Duraz (interesting NPCs follower) for testing purposes, so they were present at the time of the CTDs. One CTD was in Riften, the others were in random wilderness areas and on the roads.

 

I am using Mod Organizer, running LOOT religiously, creating TES5 Merged Patches and Wyre Bash bashed patches as per the instructions given on the youtube gamer poets channel. I have the SKSE memory settings applied and memory blocks log enabled. At the time of my last CTD this is my memory blocks log:

I am also using the Skyrim Mod Combiner for textures, which I added pretty early on in my build and have had no apparent problems with.
 
The only mod I ran into any real problems with happened in this last batch and was "Death Alternative - Your Money or your Life" which seemed to cause freezes during the post-combat bleedout recovery phase. I uninstalled it, started an entirely new game and all freezing disappeared.
 
After the CTDs began I enabled papyrus logging but of course have no idea what I'm looking at. Here are the last bunch of lines after the most recent CTD happened:

Out of this bunch I suppose I'm most suspicious of Immersive Winterhold, though I have no real reason to think there's any problem there. When I went to check it out I did however notice some potential issues with the lighting just outside at the bottom of the bridge where that elf stands guarding the entrance waiting to test you on arrival. There was some flickering that seemed wrong but I can't imagine that's the cause of my woes. Seemed more like a texture issue.
 
I also got 36 ITM records warning with Inigo, but apparently those are intentional, or so the various discussions seem to indicate.
 
I don't know what more information I can give here, that's all I know and I can't figure it out. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Occasional CTDs in exterior spaces are hard to avoid with the Bethesda game engine, even when everything is setup properly.  It's possible the CTDs you are seeing are due to scripting problems, but it could also be VRAM usage. You didn't mention testing your VRAM usage to see whether the CTDs you are seeing are associated with high VRAM use; this can sometimes happen even with a graphic card that has lots of VRAM. There are several ways to test this; I use GPU-Z. Enable the GPU-Z log function, and then when there is a CTD look at the VRAM usage in the log to see how close it was to the VRAM on the graphics card. It also helps to look at VRAM usage at places known to have high VRAM use such as the top of the stairs leading to the castle in Whiterun.

I actually already had Skyrim Performance Monitor but I haven't used it since I installed the ENB, as they supposedly don't work well together. There's a fix now though, so I got it working and found that I am indeed coming quite close to but not exceeding the Vram limit of my card. Here is a picture:

So at 3,057mb out of a possible 3,072 could that be the cause of the CTDs?

 

Also I notice that the memory is at 3,767 which clearly exceeds the skyrim 3.1gb limit, but that is the point of the SKSE memory patch, yes? To go beyond that limitation? Or am I misunderstanding?

 

Either way, I'm having a hard time understanding what could be using so much of my Vram... the textures I have chosen are all 1-2k and I know there are people with similar available vram using more textures and mods than I am.

I actually already had Skyrim Performance Monitor but I haven't used it since I installed the ENB, as they supposedly don't work well together. There's a fix now though, so I got it working and found that I am indeed coming quite close to but not exceeding the Vram limit of my card. Here is a picture:

So at 3,057mb out of a possible 3,072 could that be the cause of the CTDs?

 

Also I notice that the memory is at 3,767 which clearly exceeds the skyrim 3.1gb limit, but that is the point of the SKSE memory patch, yes? To go beyond that limitation? Or am I misunderstanding?

It can help reduce the problems when the VRAM use is near the card VRAM max, but it is using system RAM which is much slower. It helps with some of the transient VRAM demand if it doesn't persist, but it's not the same as VRAM. For example, read the discussion on the STEP forums about the new Nvidia 970 card and the complaints about it being actually a 3.5 GB card that uses system RAM for an additional 0.5 GB. 

 

Either way, I'm having a hard time understanding what could be using so much of my Vram... the textures I have chosen are all 1-2k and I know there are people with similar available vram using more textures and mods than I am.

I use reduced size normal maps for almost all my exterior textures, and with a large set of mods (although maybe not as big as yours) I still periodically see GPU-Z say I'm using 3.8-3.9 GB on my 4 GB graphics card. Some areas in Skyrim are a lot more VRAM intensive than others.

Alright, so I need to set expandsystemmemory to false, and if that doesn't help I need to start giving some mods and textures the axe to save space and see if that works. I'm thinking JK's Skyrim is likely to be resource intensive? I recently added that. It's great but it's got to be heavy. I'll do all that, test, and let you know if it worked. Thanks for taking the time to help me!

Well, setting ExpandSystemMemory to false did not stop the CTDs, nor did eliminating some of the memory-heavy mods in my list. I then unchecked all the mods I've added in the last several days and was able to play for over an hour with no CTD at all. I put the mods back and CTD'd twice within 30 minutes of play.

 

So at this point I'm wondering if I'm more likely to pin down the source of the CTD by either A) going through my last 15 mods installed one at a time, playing with each one loaded for an hour or until it CTDs, or B ) if I'm better off creating a new profile and installing only character enhancement mods and the few mods I want which require a new game, then slowly add mods in one at a time, play testing each extensively. I haven't seen anything anywhere about which method for creating a modded game is better.

 

The problem I have with A is that I imagine the possibility exists that the issue is caused by something other than the most recent mods I've added, and I'll just be spending that huge amount of time running aimlessly around skyrim for nothing, and with B the potential problem I see if if I install something heavy with scripts which turns out not to work, I'm then potentially dealing with a game i'm invested in broken by scripts.

 

Anyone have any advice as to how I should proceed? What would you do?

Guess not! I cut my textures back even farther and started a new profile. No CTDs with ENB + textures, going to just add mods in very slowly and play test each for a decent amount of time and hope for the best. Maybe the CTDs were mod related, maybe Vram related, I don't know.  *shrug*
