feature request - color rows in panes

Question

Posted

I hope this is the correct place to make a suggestion/request. If anyone knows a better forum, please let me know.

I understand the current features (categories, filtering and the new grouping), but what I think would be cool would be to somehow be able to color-code the rows in both panes. That way I can visually group mods and esp's however I want by making their rows/cells the same color, and I think it would be easier on the eyes to view the mod list that way. I imagine the options would be 3 different shades of each of the primary and secondary colors and also a black, gray, and white (so a total of 21 color/shade options). That's all I can think of for now.

There are already numerous requests for colouring the panels in MO to aid in some manner.

Some of those may be part of @Tannin's version 2.0 planning, which is about UI change.

This is unlikely to happen I'm afraid to say. I'm very opposed to the idea of providing multiple ways to do the same things. Colors wouldn't allow you to do anything you can't do with categories.

I'm also not a fan of making MO look like candyland. ;)

Mkay. I wouldn't necessarily liken it to candy land, LOL! I would definitely liken it to a spreadsheet, though. Hear me out - with a spreadsheet, yeah, I can set a "categories" column or 100 different types of categories columns. But I can also color records however I want without creating yet another category column. It's just another organizational tool which has the benefit of making really long, plain black and white lists less daunting to look at. It also makes it easier to visually, at a glance, discern differences between records while they are all together WITHOUT filtering - this can be handy for seeing how different types of records relate to all the other records. There are reasons why color-coding is used so often by businesses, especially when it comes to organizing inventory, filing systems, etc.

And I'm not suggesting that you (as the author) would be the one to determine which mods get what colors, making everyone's mod into a candy land ::P: . I think it should just be an option that users can set individual records to whatever colors they want (again, similar to a spreadsheet). In MO I use the dark style sheet and I would expect that when I install a new mod, the color of the row would just be the default (black) until I decide to change it.

Anyway, I'm grateful for the features that are already present. I just love spreadsheets and would love to see some similar features!

Thanks for your response and also the opportunity to make suggestions!
