MO has deleted itself and all of the mods along with it?

Question

Posted

hi. so,the title pretty much says it all. i was installing an ENB (RealLike ENB to be specific),and i think i did something wrong when moving and editing files in the Skyrim directory, because after i moved some files from a .ZIP file (it was a patch to stop blurry objects from appearing in the ENB),so i tried opening up MO after and i got a message saying something along the lines of 'This shortcut has been deleted, and therefore does not work.' and then that was the end of that. i still had it downloaded, but i had to re-install it,i said to myself surely the mods will be there, they stayed there with NMM,but to my surprise, they weren't there anymore. that was last night,so this morning (or afternoon) shortly after waking up,i try and re-install MO,for it to not have Skyrim recognized as a game, and i have to go into 'Browse..' to find it,which i do,but THEN MO says that the folder file cannot be specified or the folder lacks a game binary and launcher. I'm so confused rn.

This is a strange situation to say the least.

It smells of harddrive failure, or maybe some virus/anti-virus. Have you run anti-virus software lately?

Is your hard drive old/new? HDD or SSD?

OK, let's get some detail here to try and understand what has happened.

Please provide your installation locations for both Skyrim and MO.

The setup of your hard drives, ie. just one or two or maybe you use an external drive for downloads.

The version of Windows and whether or not you have administrator rights on it. (to avoid any permission issues.)

You mentioned NMM, do you still have that installed and were you trying to use it alongside MO?

With what you have provided so far no one will be able to help as you haven't given any clues.

For the record it is impossible for one action by MO to delete itself and all your downloads.

Having said that, my first guess is you tried to set the binaries for your ENB from inside an explorer window of the archive, as though it was already extracted. Afterward, the archive was closed again and the binaries weren't available for the calling programs.

You said you "moved them", you probably created shortcuts to them by mistake.

Check this by looking into the folder that you "moved" those files and see if there are any with the *.lnk extension.

At any rate, all of this is just guesswork until you provide something solid.

My Skyrim as far as I know is where it should be, Program File (x86)/Steam/SteamApps/common/Skyrim. As for MO i..actually don't know. i've tried several times in the past actually to look for where it's installed but i've never found anything,i can only find the download in the downloads section. And hard drives are confusing i've never understood them, but through running dxdiag and looking at the 'Drivers' section,it says the main driver model is WDDM 1.3 if that helps. And no,i have no external hard drives. i run on Windows 8 and have full administrator rights. And yes,i do have NMM installed, however there are no files on there as i deleted them all before installing MO (i dont know if that was a stupid move or not but ayy lmao) and as for the whole ENB thing i have no problem with that now really, however i will tell you,MO has deleted itself three times since this post has been made. It works fine until you try and modify something, like just now it's deleted itself and everything along with it after i cleaned my Update.esm in TES5Edit. yesterday it deleted itself after i tried downgrading back to SKSE 1.6,and the day before that it deleted itself over something else. i'm really happy that at least i know what the problem is and how it's caused, but,i'll need to use TES5Edit in the future as i've experienced my first crash in months, obviously something's wrong and something needs to be cleaned, but,i suppose i can deal with a crash or two rarely happening over trying to solve it and having all of my mods disappear. if you think you can solve it then go ahead. Oh,and,if it helps,TES5 Edit does the same thing. deletes its' own shortcut, and i have to install it again. MO does the same thing however the data that it once held disappears completely. i might just go back to NMM,there isn't much difference between the two anyway.

I dont care for MO myself but I can definitely say that there are many very distinct differences.

I'll let one of the others type all that out.

I have had this also happen one time... I cant remember what caused it but it was like MO could figure out where all the mods were installed. I never really investigated...

you probably said this somewhere but did you happen to change the directory of where MO was originally located.

I'm having a hard time believing this. Software just doesn't make decisions by itself.

Going on how you describe the issue I would actually advise NOT allowing yourself full administrator privileges. If you are having trouble finding an installation of MO I shudder to think what other damage you could do to your system.

Apologies if that sounds harsh.

Since you are having the same issue with TES5Edit I think that shows it isn't a MO issue but a user issue.

idk how i'd change the directory if i can't find the original in the first place.

it doesn't make the decisions by itself, you see. i delete it unintentionally i suppose,if that makes sense to you. i just can't run ANY programs or have anything installed that alters the Skyrim directory at all, like,at all. if it does then the consequence,is,MO being deleted. but,i can live with that. i have everything i need and i'm perfectly comfortable, but if crashing becomes a thing in the future, well, then there's a problem if i can't run TES5Edit. and,TES5Edit doesn't have the same issue, really. it deletes it's shortcut but doesn't delete itself, unlike MO,which does both. and yeah,it's odd that i just can't find the directory to where MO is installed. i've tried searching on 'My PC' (which is probably the largest search result thing you can get on your computer) and i just couldn't find an MO folder,it's odd. and i know i can damage my system,i'm not exactly smart when it comes to tech stuff, however i don't believe i have damaged my system. maybe a bit but that's exterior,i've dropped this laptop a few times but idk

Don't take this the wrong way, but with the issues you are going having, I would suggest using TES5Edit or similar tools should be avoided.

Find a techy friend that can help you get used to your system and try to mod your game only when you are more familiar with your computer.

how could that be took the wrong way?no worries!and the thing is,exactly two days ago i would have been using this laptop for a year now.

..yikes. i think it's a matter of just getting used to skyrim or pc gaming in general. i've had this game since valentine's day this year, but i haven't really played it much. i guess i'll just experiment with things. i'm not too worried or fussed by this, idm starting again and again,i just think it would help if i learned along the way,and i have, because now i know that i shouldn't try messing with anything mod related, and let my organizer do everything. but,in the end,i'm not too worried, thanks for your help :)

So like I said before, have you actually looked in your desktop recycling bin to see if it's in there?

Also, what anti-virus are you using? Have you checked that to see whether it may have quarantined MO?

the mods are all there in the recycle bin, however restoring them is useless as it does nothing. and i use McAfee, and no,i haven't actually checked that,i don't think it will come across as a harmful program but it never hurts to check,i'll try it now.

nah,it hasn't been quarantined or viewed as harmful etc. at all. it usually has a pop-up message anyway if that's the case.
