Screen Freeze upon opening NPC inventory

Question

Posted

I've been playing happily along since installing my brand new shiny SSD.  Things are zooming right along and all my mods are playing together nicely.  Tonight I had a screen freeze as Belethor's "what have you got for sale" inventory opened.  I thought hrrmmmm maybe a fluke, so I Task Managered out and restarted my game.  Ran over to WarMadine's and the same thing happened with Ulfberth's inventory.

I'm not sure what could have suddenly caused this to happen or how to fix it.  I read something recently about editing the SkyrimPrefs.ini and changing the iTexMipMapSkip=0 to 1 if opening the inventory screen causes a freeze.  So I changed that one, does this one remain the same? iTexMipMapMinimum=0  Not sure what MipMap stands for so I really don't know what it does or doesn't do.  I still experienced the screen freeze upon opening the NPC inventory.

Any other ideas?  Not sure what other information ya'll might need to fix this irritating problem.  I normally would enter my LOOT list but since I can't figure out how get it into a text file, it's not here.

Thanks in advance for any insight anyone might be able to give... I'm really at a loss here.

Happy Thanksgiving to all that celebrate it, for everyone else, Happy Thursday! :D

Ciao!

Moved to Support Thread.

Just a guess here but from the sounds of the parameter it has something to do with texture mipmaps which you probably don't want to disable. I'd leave them alone. It sounds like a leveled list issue or a rogue INI tweak. I'd start by recreating your Bashed Patch and then test it with the new Patch.

Recently Dragon King said, "Moved to Support Thread."

Whoops!! I thought that's where I posted.  I'm sorry :(

Thanks for the quick response Dragon King!  I did rebuild the patch and it just froze up on me again.  So leave the mipmaps both at 0?  I did change it to 1 just to see if it would work.  I got back into my game but it did happen again.  So I went in and set it back.  Once I did that I couldn't get in the game at all.  I put it back to 1 and it worked fine.

So having said all that, let me say that I'm still totally confused and freezing up.   :wallbash:

I know you can figure this out... I've read a ton of your posts   :ninja:  (I was trying to be a good girl and make sure I searched the forum first. :D ) and you are pretty darned good at fixing things...

So, what's next oh mighty one :D

Thanks in advance!

From the way you describe your issue, I take it this is a recent development? ...meaning it worked before? If so, you had to have changed something or added something new to have caused the issue. If this is a new playthrough and the first time you've tried this, that is another story. What non-STEP mods do you have installed?

Hey there :D  Good morning/afternoon and Happy T'day to ya!

Is there a way to get a general list of the mods I have installed via LOOT?  Or anything else?  It was super easy to get the list with BOSS, but we've all advanced (well most of us anyway) to LOOT and the option to send it to a text file is seemingly non-existent. :geek:  At the very least, I can't find it.  I will find a way to get a text file of the report and come right back with the list.

Thank you Dragon King, I sure appreciate your help!

In the MO installation folder you can open the profiles folder and then the profile that you're using. You'll find a couple list there that are useful. ModList is your mods for that profile in reverse order (annoy that this is written in reverse) and then plugins is going to be a list of your plugin for that profile. It's in the correct order.

Thank you so much!!  I finally tracked down the handy dandy way to copy and paste the contents of any folder/directory, unfortunately it only lists them alphabetically, but at least it's a list!  I did find the MO plugins.txt, and that worked SO much better!  Thanks again for that tip...

And now, my mod list (which is mostly according to STEP), I did vary just a wee bit!  Individuality, gotta love it!   :teehee:

Whew, I think I have brain strain trying to figure out how to get my load list! LOL  Thank you for list tip in MO!

I'm also including my ini files, if you'd care to take a look at those and maybe tell me if there are any glaring mistakes. (pleasepleaseplease)  I'd sure appreciate it... perhaps I've entered something wrong there.

And yes, this is a new development in my new setup.  I recently got an SSD drive, so I installed everything fresh and new. This is a new playthrough.  I got the occasional freeze with my old setup, but only rarely.  But now it's sneaking into this setup too.

You don't know how much I appreciate this.  I'm not a total newb when it comes to doing the basics, but beyond that, I'm lost.

Thanks again.

Ciao

Awwww bless your heart.  I appreciate any attention you can spare but I totally understand.  Many moons ago as a struggling single mom to the greatest son in all the world, I spent many hours and all weekends trying to sell to uninterested shoppers. But hey. it paid the bills and when it was no longer enough, I moved on.   ::P:   But, to be honest, when I finally started what was to become my career choice, I never missed it nor did I ever look back.     LOL

Thanks for all your help thus far.

Since the "freeze" is random I'm dealing with it and playing anyway.  Gotta love us Skyrim addicts!    I don't need no 12 step program! I'm never that far from my computer! LOL

Have a great remainder of your day and upcoming weekend.  May you be blessed with time to play and do what you love!

Ciao darlin, I'll check back periodically.

FWIW I have many of the same mods as you, and I get occasional CTDs when looking through long inventories, e.g. at the forge when scrolling through the miscellaneous (or is it "auxiliary") armor list provided by Immersive Armors.  At one point I was getting CTDs fairly consistently scanning that long list, so I used the Savegame Script Scalpel which removed 98 unattached script references from my savegame, and that seemed to take care of the problem.  Still happens on rare occasions though, so I always save before doing any crafting or enchanting etc.  (btw my problem is CTDs not freezing like yours)

I believe The iTexMipMapSkip entry is influenced by the Launcher Texture Quality settings. A mipmap is a reduced (half, I think) resolution image contained within DDS texture files. Skipping a mipmap causes, I believe, the game engine to render the next lower resolution (next mipmap) of a texture. It certainly reduces vram use on my machine, at least. Raising the number is probably a good thing to try if maxed vram is considered a potential problem cause. All those menu item display textures add up.

Did you add ANY mod since having normal menus with merchants? I've had broken meshes (items added by a mod) cause issues like yours.

EDIT: Its been awhile, so I re-checked Texture Quality and iTexMipMapSkip values; they are (inversely) related.

Thank you so much Glanzer!  It's good to know what all this stuff does at least on some level.  Now that you mention it, I did have most of my freezes at the forge when perusing the Auxiliary Armor list.  It's happened a few times at Belethors and WarMaidens, but pretty regularly at the Forge.  I appreciate you sharing that info with me.  Makes me think perhaps I need to look at the Savegame Script Scalpel.  I'll go find it and read what it does and how to get it to do what I want! LOL  Not always an easy endeavor with new programs.  Thanks again!!

Thank you Searcher7 for your post.  I had no clue what the heck a "mipmap" was or did.  Good to know that information and what it does.  Reducing VRam is always a good thing right?  LOL  So the mipmap setting of "1" can be higher than that?  I can see how it would freeze/crash there most of all.  I haven't added any mods since the last freeze.  Prior to that  I did add about 3-4 other mods before deciding it was truly an issue.  I originally thought it was a fluke but after freezing a few times in 1 day, I figured I should probably find out what the problem was, if possible, before I threw any further mods into the fray!  Having any issue should halt the addition of mods until the issue is resolved otherwise it's just adding confusion and additional problems.  A lesson I learned early on when I decided to finally mod my game.   Unfortunately it was something I learned the hard way. LOL Isn't that how it always is though.  Thank you so much for all the information you gave me.  It is very helpful.

I think I have enough information now to begin tracking down what's happening. :lightbulb:   Thank you both so much.  I appreciate the time you took to try to help me fix this.  Or, at the very least, I now have new things to learn about this game we love so much.  Yeah, it's true, I'm an ES/Skyrim addict.  I admit it freely

Thanks again!  Have a great weekend or what remains of it anyway.  Now I'm off to Google a few things and hopefully learn along the way!   :geek:

You're quite welcome. "High" quality textures sets iTexMipMapSkip=0, presumably giving "high quality" textures by using the base image resolution. "Medium" sets iTexMipMapSkip=1, presumably using the next, half-size mipmap. "Low" quality sets the value to 2, apparently using the one-fourth resolution mipmap. Higher numbers (I see 11 mipmaps in many Skyrim DDS files) would probably look really bad up close. Mipmaps are normally used to more quickly texture distant (smaller) screen objects, as I understand them.

Good luck on your freeze hunt.
