Help me with my Override Folder

Question

Posted

This screenshot shows the current contents of my Mod Organizer Override Folder.

I'm looking to clean it out so that I can use Tes5Edit to merge mods (I've had as high as 244 in my load order and I want to add more... I *may* have a problem.)

Before I go hacking and slashing, and inevitably breaking my setup, I'm hoping you folks could help me out as to what is safe to delete and what is not.  And if it's not safe to delete what I need to do with it.

I know that Dual Sheath Redux Patch.esp and Bashed Patch, 0.esp need to be pulled out into their own individual mods. I feel fairly confident that the entire "tools" folder can be deleted. I'm also nearly certain that the "SkyProc Patchers" folder can be deleted as well.

I have no idea about the rest of the contents.

You generally never let your 'Overwrite' folder get to a stage that looks like this.

After EVERY operation of a tool, or during regular gaming, there will be a warning in the toolbar indicating attention is needed.

DO NOT IGNORE THIS WARNING.

The Mod Organizer wiki tells you what type of files are found in this folder, and how they got there.

It basically boils down to this:

  1. If there is already a mod active in the Left-hand pane, any files that are created or edited will replace those files.
  2. If there is an active mod but lacks these new files, they will need to be moved to this mod.
  3. If there is no active mod then the files created or edited will be placed in the 'Overwrite' folder.

With option 1 there will be NO warning and there is no action needed by you.

With options 2 or 3 the user needs to decide which mod generated them and then manually move them to that mod. This is why the 'Overwrite' folder should be cleared after each action.

Logs or txt files could safely be deleted but plugins and ini files need to go into their respective mods.

Those files in the 'meshes' folder are probably from FNIS, or something similar, but you need to be sure and then move them into the correct mod.

its basically another mod folder... It really doesnt matter

mine looks worse but as long as you know where the files are coming from its no big deal

I didn't even look at the pic and now that I did it looks just fine to me...

Ok so the Tools, scripts, meshes folders are from FNIS for sure

The skyproc patchers folder is likely just generated logs or a temporary folder

The SKSE/Chargen is from a saved profile from racemenu

the esps are just the dynamic patches...

It looks just fine to me so theres no need to make a super big deal about it...

I think STEP has you move more of those folders/files to different mod folders

This folder ALWAYS has the highest priority, and that may not be the best position for those mods.

It's just laziness to not move those files to their correct mods.

Leaving this folder full is asking for trouble. Bite the bullet and move them out.

actually, I would argue because most of that stuff is dynamic patchers including FNIS

So, its kinda where they should be because well Dynamic patches should almost always override.

and logs are well logs, they are overwritten ingame so it doesn't matter

Like I said, its just another mod folder but I forgot to mention that it is special because its where everything can get dumped while the VFS is happening but I dont see the harm in keeping the dynamically generated files in there

EDIT: well, I was looking a some documentation and I talked to a few people and it seems that it is a good idea to keep it clean but I never had any noticeable issues.

Just move the files to their respective folders and every time you regen the patches the files will stay in the same place

Agreed on the laziness, but I've never had problems with leaving them there before.

With respect to the patchers and reproccer, etc.  If I delete everything in this folder (I don't care about the saved chargen thing), and I do one patcher at a time (SkyRe, DSR, FNIS and the Bashed Patch in my case) and make each of those individual mods (as I think I'm supposed to), what happens the next time I run any or all of those patchers?  Will they update the files in the existing mod or will I need to constantly remake the mods?

If I were home I could try this, but, I'm stuck at work ATM.

I never touch most of the stuff that goes in there either... in fact I love having it since I know that stuff that is in there will ALWAYS take effect.. hence I do not have to worry about load order etc. when testing out stuff.

All of my own personal mods are in there since well... no reason to create even more folders and clutter the list even more.

With respect to various tools and skyprocs then as long as files are made in there then the next time you run they will still have the same name, and hence just be overwritten.

So yeah in principle if you do not know what is going on in detail then try to keep it clean and tidy.. if you know what is in there and why it is in there.. just leave it. At the end of the day it is only a "special" folder where everything will always overwrite everything else by definition.

Sorry, I don't wont to come across all 'high and mighty' but this goes against everything MO is designed for and could also be construed as against S.T.E.P. ethos.

One of MO's greatest designs is the fact everything has its own place and nothing is just clumped in with everything else.

And really saying "if you do not know what is going on" comes across as though this feature is just for newbs. It isn't.

This practice is the same sort of thing that users get messed up with when they install a whole batch of new mods in one go and then they are unsure which one has then crashed their game. Good practice is to be methodical and do things in, dare I say it, STEPs.

How hard is it to run a tool and then either create the new mod from the overwrite folder or move those files into their correct place? It should be commonplace for anyone that follows these S.T.E.P. guides.

Here endeth the rant.   :;):

even Im kinda done arguing...

Its up to the user...

If you want to follow STEP perfectly then follow the instructions

If you kinda know whats going on and you dont care then leave it

Should you delete those files NO

either move them to their own mod whether that be was STEP says or what you want

or leave them there

The only time I would see a problem is if you were installing mods into that folder and leaving them

Thats not okay...

but any sort of log or dynamically generated files

Meh, its up to you

and now Im done... I think this sums it up but Im sure someone will freak out if I missed something

Im looking at you @GrantSP 0_0

*GrantSP* is now in sneak mode.

I should make it clear, trying to convey a sense of humour or mild sarcasm is so hard on a forum. I was not having a shot at @Aiyen, just the comment. Sometimes if I don't have my breakfast before I post I sometimes go off the deep end.
