Is it possible to install Skyrim with the previous official patch?

I'm getting Skyrim for the PC in about two weeks and I am supposing that it will probably take a bit longer than that for all the mods involved with S.T.E.P to catch up with the official 1.6 patch.

 

What I want to know is if I can install the game with the previous official patch so I can enjoy the wonders of S.T.E.P straight away? I know that Skyrim Unplugged allows you to delay the automatic updates so I will obviously be using that for future but can it help me with this?

If you dont have skyrim already, then nope :(

 

As soon as you install skyrim from disc, or dl from steam and install from steam, the latest patch will be automatically downloaded. You could use SU, but then you would be on skyrim release version, 1.0, totally unpatched. There is no option to preferentially choose which patches to downloaded or not with SU, its either all or nothing. For SU to work with patch 1.5 and delay 1.6, you would need to already have patch 1.5 installed when using SU.

 

And if you dont have a personal backup of skyrim 1.5 files, then there is no way to legally obtain the 1.5 files.

I'm guessing the best thing for me to do is wait it out then? Or is it just the USKP that is having problems with 1.6?

I know it is kind of early but I'm not sure how soon these things can be spotted. Total newb-biscuit here.

You could wait. I would give it a month or so before almost all, and hopefully all, important mods are updated for 1.6. STEP should be updated by then as well, if the mods get updated. One problem is that the Construction Kit used for modding needs to be updated as well for the new patch, which has not happened yet. And maybe there will be another patch soon as well, this one feels a little incomplete.

 

You could also buy the game and mod it anyways with the latest patch. A vast majority of the mods from STEP are texture based. Those will not have issues with the new patch at all. It will also familiarize you with the modding process and STEP, so you can be ready when then new version comes out :)

Oh, I just had an idea. I could buy Oblivion and play it with mods whilst I wait.

I only ever played in on xBox 360. I guess that would give me practice too.

Is there a 'STEP equivalent' for Oblivion, do you know? I guess that would be 'OTEP' which sounds pretty Egyptian, lol.

Question: if you own a legitimate copy of the game, is it technically legal for you to download the patch files from a non-official source? (Despite the fact that it's probably illegal for that source to distribute the files.)

No... not technically. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen. As for 1.6 most of the important stuff has already been updated except for the USKP. Hopefully they will release an interim version that includes all the fixes not related to dialog.

A couple of months ago I backed up my skyrim files to disk using Steams backup. If I install these will Steam update them automaticaly to 1.6 or will they remain 1.5 as long as I have Skyrim unplugged installed before I play it?

I think if you manually backed them up without using the steam backup option it will be fine. If you used steam it will probably cause issues, not sure if the backing up backs up vanilla, as well as all updates, or just vanilla 1.0 version.

I think I'll open the folders and have a look at whats inside.

I have never ever managed to do a backup via steam. So manually is the only way for me.

Found this post on bethesda forums;

 

"Just a heads up to everyone, the Steam backup restore feature will not work to save previous patches of the game. As soon as you use it to re-install your previous patch version of the game it will automatically update you to the most recent patch.

 

I had this problem with my 1.4 patch restore when I tried to get rid of my 1.5 patch. I asked steam customer service and the program is apparently designed/needs to function this way. All backups made with steam "backup restore" will always need to be updated after being installed(even if you set things to "don't automatically update my game".) Furthermore you can't be in offline mode to use the backup restore feature, so stoping internet access won't solve this problem. Cutting off internet before the game updates will simply result in the game not running/working." - hodge182

Won't Steam not recognize or otherwise freak out over the cracked files, or simply replace them with clean, updated versions?

 

In either case, I'm 75% of the way to a brand-new v1.6 install, are there any other mods in particular that I need to watch out for or hold off for an update for?

Hey Farlo, great to see you back :)

 

I asked recently if we had a compatability list for 1.6 as yet and the lack of reply makes me think not ;) Afraid your best bet is to run through the list of STEP mods you plan to use and check the Nexus pages for confirmation of update friendliness. Boring but necessary. From what I gather most major projects have updated, USKP has a beta for now that works, and the graphics/texture mods won't cause any problems anyway.

 

There were a few hiccups waiting for an updated CK... not sure how stable that is yet or if mod authors are able to use it for updating, I'm sure someone else here has their finger on the pulse of that one.

 

Good luck with the install, there have been some tasty additions since your short sabatical :)
