CTD by Scrolling through items a few times

Question

Posted

Hi,

1. My system specs:

i5 3570K @ 4.5Ghz

7950 @ 1140/1625 3GB VRAM

16GB RAM / 1600 Mhz

2. Using ModManager

3. BOSS Load order:

  Reveal hidden contents

Both

DiversePriests_BringOutYourDeadPatch.esp

ClimatesOfTamriel-Interiors-Warm.esp

are not active

4. Using STEP 2.2.7 Core

5. I followed the instructions to the letter, I suppose. I did it twice even.

6. I include other mods aswell

  Reveal hidden contents

7. I cleaned the mods using TES5Edit and ran BOSS several times

My issues are CTDs. I started playing with a new char. Wood Elf, Marksmanship etc, killed a few Bandits, went to the first village, got the golden claw quest, went up to Bleak Falls, killed a first bandit on the outside near the entrance to bleak falls and bam! CTD.

Then, I reload, went inside the Bleak Falls, and got several CTDs afterwards. At this point however I saw that always came about when I used the items menu. Then I tried in the normal menu, and somehow I can reproduce the crash, only by scrolling back and forwards through the items, maybe the torches or the gems, I cant really say exactly (I tried without HDTorches, but that didnt make any difference). But it doesnt happen right away. The items display normally, but after a few scollings up and down, it crashes.

I hope I gave all the necessary info.

You use quite a few mods that are not in STEP. The texture, weather and RLO mods should be fine, all the other ones are most likely culprits. First of - SkyRe is a very conflicting overhaul, especially if you use all the modules. I would start off with a smaller modlist (you can include SkyRe if you want) and got rid of the following:

Midas Magic Spells for Skyirim FIXED

Training Dummies and Targets V

3DNPC - Inetersting NPCs

Bandolier - Bags and pouches

Sprint and Jump with Boost

Amazing Follower tweaks

Start up Skyrim, and from main menu type "coc bleakfallsbarrow01" in console. This will make a default character and place you inside Bleak Falls Barrow. Make a test run and report back.

Oh, do you use Safety Load?

Hi,

Thank you for your suport. I dont use safety Load, but I will as of now.

I'll try your suggestions tomorrow, when I get back from work and report back asap.

Safety Load is the cause of CTD's when opening menus - that was the reason I asked :) So unless you're experiencing game freezes and ILS's (see here for more info) I wouldn't install it.

Read the mod's description carefully.

You should follow Iroha's Skyrim Revisited + SkyRe guide it's in need of updating but should help you sort out your problems (especially after you read through the original Skyrim Revisited Guide)

I'd ditch Amazing Follower Tweaks for Enhanced Follower Framework and probably the others rootsrat mentioned though I think Mida's magic and Interesting NPC's should be ok if done right. Key words done right. Iroha's guide features a bit of a magic sytem overhaul in addition to the portions included in SkyRe so yeah. I'd post more but I'm running on no sleep it's been fun over here at my cousin's house for Thanksgiving.

Hi,

I just did what rootsrat suggested, removed said mods, ran BOSS, but the problem persisted. So I removed SkyRe and its patches. The problem was still there.

I will now read through Skyrim Revisited for further research. Thanks rootsrat, for the tip with the "coc" command, that makes testing alot easier. :)

Not sure what to suggest now to be honest.

If you want to, you can try wiping your install and redoing everything from scratch, but stick to STEP only this time and then test. When you've got it working, you can start adding mods one by one and keep testing.

The other possibility is that you have something wrong in your INI files, but I can't really think of any specific entries... It's a strange one.

Well yes, I think thats exactly what I will do. :)

I just tested with my CPU/GPU @ stock speeds, but that wasnt the problem either. (They were always stable in everything else, but you never know.)

@rootsrat - you mentioned Bandolier - Bags and pouches to remove, any issues in particular or maybe just a squirrelly mod in your experience ?

I used to use it before and I'm considering using it again, but mods that add A LOT of items to crafting menus are known to cause CTD's when crafting menus are opened. Another reason is that this mod is not in STEP, so I wanted to exclude as many conflict-prone non-STEP mods as possible in this particular case.

I don't think it caused me any issues last time I was using it, but it was quite a long time ago and I learned great deal since then, so I will be reassesing this mod at some point in future :)

Let's not get this thread off-track though.

So, before reinstalling all of it, I went through every single mod using the "coc" method and it turns out who the culprit was. ->Me.

The game crashed with the mod New thinner torches.

I had installed New Thinner torches using "Smoking Torches and Ultimate HD Torch Compatible-6950-1-0", instead of "Ultimate HD Torch by rheadude compatible".

So it was really my mistake.

I am Sorry for bothering everyone. But I still learned quite some things in the process.
