Luisangre Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Is anyone else here thinking about using SR and going with a 1k by 1k textures/ normals setup for stability? How do you guys feel about reducing texture sizes for mods that don't come with a 1k version? Getting mixed info about this being optimal or not being safe due to texture corruption.
Jormungand24 Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 I was under the assumption that the way to go was 2k textures with 1k normals for optimum performance and visuals while avoiding the 3.1GB?
Luisangre Posted November 12, 2013 Author Posted November 12, 2013 @Jormingand I would go the 2k/1k route but I'll be using an overhaul (Requiem) along with mods like Immersive battles, patrols, merchants etc. I feel safer capping all textures at 1k for the consistency, performance and quality.
mothergoose729 Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 If you have a graphics with 1gb VRAM I strongly recommend 1024x1024 color maps and normals for all textures. If you have a 2gb+ card, you can use 2k colors maps and normals for nearly everything. When I used STEP mods in my testing, I had to go down to 1k for LODs and terrain. I haven't run into texture corruption myself using either DDSopt or optimizer textures. And I used both quite a bit. I wrote a thread about it a while ago. You might find it helpful: https://forum.step-project.com/showthread.php?tid=3680
Luisangre Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 I have 4gb of vram but the problem is skyrim itself crashing because the engine can't handle so much memory usage. I've decided to go 2k x 2k, optimize what should be optimized with ddsopt and just play with minimal overhaul mods...using STEP. Safety load and enb boost should make this very stable...I hope.
Smile44 Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 I am currently running 1024k textures and 512k normals. Game looks great and running a lot of heavy script mods with zero issues. I don't know if scaling up will cause my game to become unstable but I can tell you that when I reduced my textures to this my game has never been more stable. It looks hugely better than vanilla, Full ENB and Weather and Lighting Pack, Survival pack and VEGA pack, plus STEP and Sands of Time and a sprinkling of others. No CTDs, no ILS and no memory optimizers. Pretty sure this load would not be possible with larger textures and as I stated before the game still looks great. :) Edit: Whoops am in the SR thread here. My SR install also has these texture reductions and ans still looks great.
