CTDs with Clean Install and New Games

Question

Posted

I am getting seemingly random CTDs with a clean install on a new game. The CTDs mostly occur within a few minutes of starting a new game using Live Another Live, and moving about normally in an exterior cell, though it can also occur when using the bed in the beginning to move to the starting location.

I've had this problem with fresh OS installations and fresh Skyrim installations. I've done my best to fix it on my own, but I've really run out of things to try, short of using almost no mods. I've used BOSS for the load order, Wrye Bash to make a patch, and TESVEdit to clean the official update.esm and expansions. Should I also clean all of the user mods indicated as dirty by BOSS? I've heard this can break user mods. I've used Skyrim Performance Monitor, and my usage of RAM hasn't broken 1GB during crashes, and I use no HD texture packs.

I am hoping it's something obvious like a script conflict or load order issue I am just not aware of. I would really be appreciative of anyone with a way to help. I will try anything, and get back to you with the results.

The facts:

System:

OS: Windows 7 64bit

CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 3.2 GHZ

RAM: 8GB

GPU: GeForce GTS 450, 1GB VRAM

Mod Load Order:

Papyrus Log From Last Crash:

Haha, yeah, I know I use a lot of mods. Thanks for any input! :)

No offense intended, but this sounds like "I installed hundreds of mods from Nexus that I liked and now my game crashes. Plz help fix" More than half of your mods are not used in STEP or in SR. That doesn't mean you will not get advice but I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask about such a load order.

For what it's worth, my quick view of your mod list concludes that:

1) You use a lot of mods that add gameplay content plus textures to the game via cell/worldspace edits. The tons of city mods that you use are just one example.

2) Way, WAY too many scripted mods. For example, you have Interesting NPCs installed, a mod which alone is worth 2GB of data with tons of scripts/NPCS etc. You can't expect to be able to combine that with 5 other heavy scripted mods (Wet and Cold, Inconsequential NPCS, Realisitc Needs and Diseases...etc.)

3) Too many unknown/mods that haven;'t been tested extensively (at least not here).

It seems like you haven't really given a lot of thought to installing mods, or you're new to modding. If you want to have an extensive modded skyrim, I'd start anew and go for STEP:Core.  https://wiki.step-project.com/STEP:2.2.7

No offense taken, I appreciate the thoughtful response. I certainly don't intend to abuse the good nature of people willing to help. If anything, your response confirmed my suspicions, and the link you directed me to is one of my best bets. Thank you; I think I'll be making use of it!

To be really honest with you, I wouldn't even bother trying to test which mods are causing the issue. I would just start from scratch as Nearox advised and follow the guide!! Core only! Which will be difficult enough to install properly without problems.

When you have a Core STEP installation make sure it runs stable for at least 10-20 hours. Please use Mod Organizer to install, this way you can keep a Vanilla profile and STEP Core Only profile seperately. After that you can copy the STEP Core profile and you can try installing 'some' extra mods, which you will have to test inbetween. This way it will be easier to identify the problematic mods.

You have a lot of dirty mods in your current load order, which indeed would need cleaning. The city mods you can forget on your system! As well as many known problematic mods, such as Headtracking.

To be actually able to truly help you with your current load order, even we would need weeks of testing and extreme dedication to help you out!

So for now, please just start from scratch! Install Core STEP.

Your hardware is mediocre, which is fine for running STEP Core, but you cannot run any more than that. Your CPU is not the best for Skyrim, Skyrim is sadly rather CPU dependant, installing so many scripted mods, both heavy and light, will get your CPU screaming!

Good luck

Ugh. Well since I'm feeling kind of crappy I probably didn't read the first post as throughly as I should have... at any rate.

My official recommendation (having used that very same graphics card) is to optimize your textures, everything, us the guide, ask questions. There are some mods like Vanilla Reduced Textures that I HIGHLY recommend you use, I've also heard good things about the Performance Textures from this guy called Gamwich however unlike alt3rn1ty's mods I can't say I've used them.

I wouldn't say your hardware is mediocre or that it's you cannot run more than STEP Core, merely that it'll take a bit more work than normal, your graphics card actually has a little more kick to it than Techangels laptop graphics wise (which is the second computer I had when I first got Skyrim) I also don't think having only two cores would effect your gameplay too much since I've never noticed Skyrim use more than two cores properly. That's not to say it's not important, and it might be a good idea for you to read an overclocking guide or two and crank up your cpu BCLK a couple notches. I've played Skyrim and STEP on a GTS 450 1GB, a GTX 460m 1GB (like Techangel's though he may have gotten the version of the laptop with 1.5GB VRAM) and even briefly on my desktop's GTX 460 768MB all using optimized textures, reduced normals, back when I was doing that there weren't many scripted mods so I cannot attest to how that will go. However you should be able to do Core with a fair number of extras nicely enough please do ask questions.
