Hey all,

Let me first say that I'm a huge fan of STEP!  :D  I got into it at the 2.2.0 release.  I did a fresh install for the 2.2.1 version and everything went very smoothly.  However usually after ~1hr of play some of the textures in my game turn blue/purple or black, and eventually it CTDs. Normally I would assume I have too many high-res textures loaded (I went all 2048x), but is that really the case?  I don't get frequent stuttering.  Why does the corruption only build up over time?  Doesn't Skyrim unload resources it doesn't need anymore?  Why didn't this happen on my 2.2.0 based installation?  What can I do to troubleshoot the issue?

Here is my setup and other info:

PC specs:

-win 7 64-bit

-i5-3970k @4.2Ghz

-8GB Ram (can't remember the specs of this sorry)

-Gigabyte GTX 670 OC'ed to some degree

-p8z77-v pro mobo

-750W corsair power supply

-The game is running on a HDD but my OS is running on an SSD

Game Specs:

-1920x1080 @ ultra all draw distances max no FXAA no AA no AF

-filtering LOD bias set to clamp in NVcontrol panel, all other settings default (texture filtering is high quality globally)

-installed S.T.E.P. version 2.2.1 from a clean game + some other mods not included in STEP (see list below), used texture pack combiner + 90% of optional texture mods supported by the combiner, always choosing up to 2048x where possible

-INI is default + S.T.E.P. tweaks

-Running Phinix ENB which uses an SMAA hook and handles AF

Mod list:

  Reveal hidden contents

Realistic Lighting, non-leveled items and the divine punishment mod are disabled everything else is enabled.

This is really interesting since I'm experiencing the exact same thing with my gaming rig. I cannot tell you what exactly the problem is, but would you mind posting your system specs here?

I suspect that somehow textures get lost when moved from System RAM to VRAM and that causes the artifacts...

No problem:

win 7 64-bit

i5-3970k @4.2Ghz

8GB Ram (can't remember the specs of this sorry)

Gigabyte GTX 670 OC'ed to some degree

p8z77-v pro mobo

750W corsair power supply

The game is running on a HDD but my OS is running on an SSD

Should also add I used the Texture Pack Combiner to do most of my textures. Won't be able to check on this thread for several hours so I'll be back soon.

Why does nobody EVER post the screen resolution and AA method used when creating these threads?

That would be a great idea to add to this forum:

Anybody who posts an issue has to include in the OP:

-> rig specs

-> STEP version & extra mods

-> screen resolution

-> driver settings

-> Skyrim settings (Medium/High/Ultra plus user tweaks that affect performance)

-> general mod resolution options (always highest, mixture of 1k & 2k only 1k)

-> installing method

If this information isn't given -> no help can be expexted.

I've just added this as a header to the Support forum, let me know if I missed anything.

I have the exact same issue. After a while I get the missing textures/meshes popping up, usually when I load an interior. Reloading the game brings them back, but sure enough the problem resurfaces eventually.

Please tell us your:

  • System Specs - Including model and clock rate of the CPU and GPU, whether you use an HDD or SSD, and screen resolution
  • Graphics driver version and settings
  • Skyrim launcher settings
  • STEP version and any additional mods used
  • Texture/quality resolution options - "highest available", "only 1k", etc
  • Installation method - Wrye Bash, Mod Organizer, NMM, or manual

Hey there. I've had this problem crop up a number of times in my current playthrough.

  • System Specs

    GPU: Nvidia GTX 570 with 2.5GB VRAM

    CPU: Intel i7-3770k @ 3.5GHz

    RAM: 12GB DDR3 @ 660 MHz

    MOBO: Asrock Z77 Extreme6

    PSU: 860 watt Corsair

    Skyrim is installed on an SSD

  • Graphics driver version and settings - 314.07 (Latest). Default factory settings except for some colour balancing.
  • Skyrim launcher settings - Maxed with shadows on high and AA on 4x, ini settings on shadows unchanged from what the launcher generated
  • STEP version and any additional mods used - STEP v2.2.1 with SkyRe (Races module and [Encounter Zones?] disabled), Frostfall, RCRN, and No Kill Moves
  • Texture/quality resolution options - 2048x
  • Installation method - Mod Organizer

From starting a new character I can usually get to Riverwood without any purple/black textures. I've gone as far as Bleak Falls Barrow to as short as the 3 Standing Stones before I notice purple/black textures and the soon inevitable crash. The 3 standing stones I noticed some purple moss. I examined it for about 5 seconds and then I crashed. The one in which I reached Bleak Falls Barrow, once the interior was loaded, a large amount of the ground was black, as was a lot of armor on the dead bandits in the initial room. I opened my inventory and a lot of the models of clothing and armor were purple. Then I crashed. Quite bizarre.

Once purple textures, black textures and crashes started cropping up I reinstalled STEP according to Baseline and didn't have the problem. It's really unfortunate since I'm fairly sure my box can handle 2048x with only a bit of stuttering while loading worldspaces but that doesn't seem to be the case. With the 2048x setup I get a consistent 60FPS throughout the entire game with the exception of swamp areas around Morthal which drop to about 45-50.

I've decided to try an installation with Wrye Bash with my 2048x settings. I doubt it will change much, however I will get back to you with results and it will be good practice to familiarize myself with Wrye Bash.

My apologies for not providing information. I did read the thread, but I didn't have time when I posted to provide my specs, and I hoped there would be some additional discussion based on the OP's information.

Edit: I am also running Project ENB

When choosing textures I always chose the highest resolution, and I used Wrye Bash to install everything.

I can play for anywhere between about 45min to 1h20min without experiencing issues. After ~1hr my game will either crash, or I will start seeing the purple/black textures and then crash soon after. The textures tend to appear on items in inventories and on NPCs.

I would also like to note that I am testing out this memory leak fix https://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/32363

It hasn't appeared to have affected my stability.

I hope it's not a case of having too many HD textures. The game looks so great, and still runs really well for the hour or so that it can.

I previously had my Skyrim installed on my HDD, and I moved it to my SSD using Steam Mover. I've since had numerous problems with programs (including Steam) trying to figure out where my game or my mods were installed, so I've just now moved it back.

I've had this missing textures problem regardless of where my game was installed. Moving it to my SSD was an attempt at gaining more stability.

Edit: This isn't to say you aren't right, just trying to provide more info.

I'd be very surprised indeed if SSDs were to blame. Is everyone also using Mod Organizer? I'd be curious to know whether switching to Wrye Bash improves this.
