Does Medieval Lanterns of Skyrim need special assembly or patch?

Looking at the screenshots the mod, someone would probably need to create LOD models for the candles if dynamic LOD for the candle flames is desired.

How difficult is it to create those LOD models for candles? Can a layman do it?

To create a LOD object with the flames only, copy the full model to a new filename with  *_dyndolod_lod.nif

Use NifSkope to remove everything but the BSX and BSValueNode with "AddOneNode49" in their names. Change the BSX flag so that only bit 4 is checked.

 

See Meshes\DynDOLOD\lod\clutter\impchandelliercandle01_dyndolod_lod.nif in DynDOLOD Resources as example. It is the candle flames LOD for meshes\clutter\imperial\impchandelliercandle01.nif

 

Then add a rule to DynDOLOD\Edit Scripts\DynDOLOD\rules\DynDOLOD_SSE_candles_[low|medium|high].ini

LODGenXX=mlos_lantern,,,,Far LOD,Unchanged,0

This is how the LOD object mesh should look like? I attached original candle and mesh turned into LOD. I thought I would run it by you before doing entire mesh modification because there 57 meshes and I don't want to do them all over again if I made mistakes.

I should the same with animated meshes like 

mlos_lantern_02_anim.nif

mlos_lantern_02_hang.nif

mlos_lantern_05_anim_with_hang_x1.4.nif

 

Also some meshes are posts with candles e.g. mlos_light_post_02_whiterun_01.nif do the same to them too?

You remove as much from the nif as possible and keep the shapes that you want to be visible as LOD.

I included candle LODs in DynDOLOD 2.69

 

The mod also has a script that turns on/off a LIGHts. Since there is currently no LOD for these LIGHts nothing needs to be patched.
