Does Legendary Cities - Tes Arena - Skyrim Frontier Fortress require any special assembly? 

Author of the mod provide his own LOD but say to use lodgenerator for better quality lod.

LODs are implemented for all cities in 5.0 Version. (also you can create your lods and the resources are provided in the mod)

 

Were there any problems with the LOD after generating it?

There weren't any problems generating DynDOLOD with my humongous load order with 237 esp/esm plugins and 425 esl plugins.

During installation of Legendary Cities - Tes Arena - Skyrim Frontier Fortress  I chose not to install mod's LOD. Author of the mod himself points you to use LOD generator. 

 

The LOD seems to look good. Example pics of Amol City loacted not far from Winterhold:
