CTD at random intervals - [SOLVED]

Vintage5

Question

Hi,

I seem to be getting CTDs at random intervals. This happened in the past with STEP and I had to stop using it as a result, however this time around I'm looking to solve the issue.

There are a couple of dirty "mods", but I'm unsure if these should be fixed as they are official. Update and Dawguard ESPs. Here is the full list below from BOSS, note I have disabled the "birds" mod and still gotten the same CTDs.

One last thing to mention is that I'm using a very old save-game, from patch 4 or 5 maybe, and it does show a message about "missing content". The save is from one of the first versions of STEP. Could this be causing the problems?

Welcome back, hopefully we can help you enjoy the game again!

Your old savegame is definitely the first culprit I'd investigate. Skyrim (and the mods in STEP) have changed a lot since then and it's very likely there's something broken in there. Try making a new game and playing for a while to see what happens.

If you just following the v2.2.0a guide then it's already a little out of date unfortunately. I'd suggest you go through this list of proposed changes for v2.2.0b and follow the removals/replacements it mentions.  You can disregard the TPC and SRO business if you already have those files, there's no way a texture file is causing CTDs.

Thanks Farlo. I'll attempt to make all those changes I can from the guide (all the ones that don't require me to re-install STEP) and start a fresh game. Once I'm past the intro I'll set a macro to keep the player moving about. I'll also put a spell in one hand and a weapon in the other, then set the macro to click RMOUSE/LMOUSE at intervals too, as some of the CTDs seemed timed to when I'd use certain attacks. That should be enough to determine if it's the save over several hours.

Cheers.
